@@sproket343 sony is a technology company, not a company that make product that catering to a community that haven't advanced much since the 80s, I mean, even a replica of a MDR R10, with all its fault, still competes with current offerings.
It's made of aged wood, with a driver that's not made anymore.
It's simply won't fit in inside their Road to Zero Campaign. Being a huge company, has its demerits, at least they still spare some money and people for R&D to cater to us. For what it is, the signature series lineup still act more like a small boutique product than something from a huge tech company.
Why do you consider the MDR Z1R, their current flagship ain't worth your time?

It's tempting in 2023. They have, i think a bluetooth-capable version double the price. But the whole point of listening to this is in the best (uncompressed) way--just plugging them in to my MP3 player.
They are now $109. Revisiting this review because that's pretty tempting...

I think I might like them MORE than my Meze Empyrean, Campfire Cascade, Focal Clears, Spirit Torino Radiante...I think I like them more than any other headphone I've heard. Obviously I must appreciate bass more than most audiophiles. They sound so 3-dimensional to me. So immersive. So beautiful. I LOVE THEM

I got the r7dx for $99 with the coupon code and they were terrible until I bent the headband like you said (now they are very nice). Going to give those to my brother and thinking of upgrading to either this or the Dan Clark aeon closed

I just ordered them a few hours ago. I don't care about looks when it comes to technical equipment as long as it works. I saw those a few months ago and since then wanted to know how they sound having that much space behind the driver. No matter what kind of driver is installed. You are the first one saying it's a wooden sound. I.need.to.test.them. I even kind of like how they look xd

I tried these and I found them a bit disappointing. The build seemed plasticky and flimsy for the price and the isolation was poor. I could hear external noise almost like it was an open-back (which for me at least defeats the purpose of closed-back). I hope Hifiman will continue to make more closed backs because I liked the sound and I'd like to see what else they can come up with.

That chonky headband looks better with these cups than any of its other implementations. I actually don't mind its looks. I do own some Stanton Dynaphase, so perhaps I'm immune to giant cup prejudice.
Closed backs are getting better then, that's certainly welcome. Maybe eventually we can get some sub $300 closed backs that are truly worth considering (other than the robin?)
I think they look awesome I picked some up can't wait to hear the bass. I think this design will accommodate the bass great with all that space know there. Love the color top. 😊

Instead of being $600 headphones that are built like $300 headphones and sound like $1200 headphones, these are now $300 headphones that are built like $300 headphones and sound like $1200 headphones. I pity the fool that's forced to decide between these, the Dekoni Blue and the Meze 99 Classics, and as of right now I am that fool.
What did you chose in the end? The r9 is 280€ on amazon and i wonder if it's worth it
@@omniscient4510 Ordered Dekoni Blue last night because the price dropped from like 290€ to 245€, and because I heard a few mixed opinions on the R9 (some treble hotness on solid state amps, some people thinking it sounded weird), and because the Dekoni do a certain thing really well (warmth) at the expense of other things (resolution, soundstage) instead of the R9 doing everything sort of well but with extra bass which means the Dekoni give me a reason to buy more headphones later on for other things. People looking for an everything pair of headphones and/or don't have an amp might be better off with the R9, but I just bought an amp (Topping L50) and I wanna build a small collection so the Dekoni are just a more logical choice for me right now.

@@williamcatalano1762 I like them more than the LCD x, Focal Elegia, and even the hifiman anandas. I think for musical enjoyment these smash hard. They look weird but they sound insanely good. The bass on these is super clean but very girthy and I love that. It doesn't ruin the other frequencies.
@@seans5159 I was going to get the Elegia and waited then the Celeste came out then ended up being more money but they are better looking, I've heard mixed on sounding better... So this might be a good option for me. I want a closed back.

@@williamcatalano1762 Probably elegia for clarity. The elegia is bright in my opinion. The hifimans are darker/warmer but has really strong vocals all things considered. It comes down to soundstage for me. The hifimans are pretty large compared to elegia.

I'm a bit confused with these guys. Are you saying you can't use a dual 3.5mm to 4.4mm balanced cable with these? It only accepts the TRRS single cable balanced? Any thoughts why this limitation?
You can use the same double 3.5mm TRS to balanced hifiman/focal cable. Its just that you can use the same input as the blumini TRRS balanced.

Depends on how sensitive your headphones are and how crappy your current source is. Probably yes, if even only a little.

@@nqxo9829 Getting a dac and amp may help with distortion at high volume. It really depends on if the headphone or the amp is what is holding the other back. I would say that you should do it if you think you may end up buying a better headphone in the future. I wouldn't spend more than half of the cost if your headphones if you aren't sure. An amp would probably help a little, so you still win even if you don't buy another headphone. I suggest something portable with decent power output if you want to go places other than your desk to use your headphones.

I’ve played around with my hands (I know I know lol) covering the backs of my LCD2Cs, and you can kind of shape your hands like the cups of the R9’s, and that’s when they sound the best when covering them 🤷🏼♂️

Z, I hope you'll recall the Fostex TH MKII as you reviewed a few years back. It is of course over and above all Japanse, as well as being finished in Urushi lacquer which is applied to the Japanese Cherry Birch housings, all of which a very elderly and extremely wise and experienced artisan does by hand, applying the lacquer layer by layer, with each layer the addition of an almost imperceptible amount of silver foils that end up being the magical touch after the 12 layers are finished, he patiently waits an entire day for each layer to fully cure. The end result is very similar to this color on the R9, at least to my eye and the comparison I've been able to do through looking at each model on my laptop screen. The R9 however, is quite different and there is one particular feature that stands out for me and makes me see the R9 as a female based solely on the following; the odd protrusion on the cups gives the appearance that it/she is a pregnant bitch, a half-sister to the MK2, the different parent's genes creating the discrepancy in the looks department. The pregnant bellies don't look normal either and this is alarming and has me worried that there is some really evil, hideous, perhaps alien or monstrous shit for a fetus in there. I'm not sure how you feel in regards to ******** but........ we neeeeed to make it happen regardless of if she is in one of those states that have backtracked via an imagined time machine to 50 years or so in the past and banned something that as we can see from this example is frankly in the best interest to the human race as a whole to continue especially to prevent whatever is inside of the R9.

You said, R9 has the better bass Hifiman ever did. So, you have Flux amp on table. You have to try this with HE6. Then you will hear how the amazing visceral bass should sounds like. I didn’t hear Susvara. But HE6 bass… 👌

I just got these this week. I am not interested in look or build quality but I am rather disappointed: they sound low resolution, modest detail and very moderate clarity. Shipping them back to Amazon with some regrets because the price and comfort was good.

@@apollomoonlandings Nope, but I do have some standards when it comes to how my headphones look. My standards aren't very high (I own e.g. Stax L300, Fidelio X2/X3, Ananda. which none really are stylish headphones, but definitely more so than these).
edit: I also think these would've looked better in matte black as the size wouldn't jump in your face as much as they do in red or at least it would've bothered me less.
Best looking passable closed-back headphones are probably the JVC HA-WM90-B.
But good luck finding a used one in the classifieds.
I got one, the least compromising closed-back headphone I have found. Not overly forward fatiguing dynamics, nor is it too dark. Just warm (but not honky), smooth and organic sounding. Pinnae gain is less than reference, but not too much so; again doesn't feel dark, but smooth and extended.

I think they picked it for Aesthetics honestly. The bulky nature matched the cups better. Certainly not my favorite style they offer.

I have hifiman sundara's and they sound amazingly awesome and excellent unbelievably.. these were newer and cost a tiny bit more.. when my sundaras broke the head band strap its uncomfortable i needed to buy new ones i thought i'd replace them with these R9. I hoped they'd be like a closed back sundara.. but no they sound like 50% worse than sundara. I can hold my hands over backs of sundara and it sounds pretty great and richer bass lows. So i thought that was what these are.. But no.. It might just be that i dont have a balanced amp but these sound like you have your head inside or adjacent to the hollow of a huge stage subwoofer wooden enclosure and the speakers are playing next to your head what it sounds like inside a giant wooden enclosure with a really amped mic sound. Its probably that my amp isnt balanced and only an Xduoo xd05plus.. if i got the hifiman EF400 it might be sounding wayyy better and brighter i'd guess. These sound like boomy video game lows and bass might distort or clip? but im guessing it'd probably sound much better if i bought that bluemini thingy but it cost as much as the headphones themselves extra?
So on the plus side if you hadnt bought like a gold plated OCC cable about 30$USD to replace your sundara or these R9's stock cable.. the stock cable with the R9's is actually quite great with them and the sundara. It gets a very life like natural sound out of both in sound profile especially with sundara's but it sounds less low latency and a bit less treble and clarity than the replacement upgrade gold plated OCC 16core cable i purchased separately but for a stock cable its awesome. Though im certain all hifiman products like my hifiman sundara need like what the bluemini outputs 4.4v amps or something of power to drive them or 5 -10v/amps or whatever. You probably need the best topping grade A amp with 5V or the proper hifiman ones or some sort of mini speaker amp to drive almost all hifiman gear so their cables and stuff are rated for those sorts of power levels. As i've never had anything better than my xduoo xd05 plus and im certain the bluemini R2R 's 4.4volts is made to sound less good than a proper hifiman amp with higher voltage or wattage whatever it was output.. well you get the idea. these headphones might be super secret awesome paired with the right amp.. or maybe im using them wrong? bluemini seems to go to one headphone port..i been using both left and right with like a Y shaped cable comes with it. I .. also dont own a balanced headphone amp. so my complaints might not be valid at all. But first impressions of what i can hear and see.. i'd choose sundaras instead.
i've a config.ini file in my PC with hardwareextremelyultimatefullvolumetruefullaudionext and hardwaretruefullsoundgeneration hardwaretruefullsoundsynthesis ? soundboost and soundamplification both at 10+ directaudiokernel2 usbaudio2 ? and other settings or whatever lowlatency-AA and things in my config file when testing.. ooh maybe levels and bass and strongdynamicrangecompression and other things in there too when testing. So who knows if my listening experience is what you are supposed to hear with them.. ? works great with sundaras though. Also, the APTX HD audio seems like it wont auto select for the bluemini. I received the bluemini with a DEVAPRO for $160usd open box maybe from hifiman official store other day it seems my LG V60 developer options not let it switch to LDAC or APTX HD if can select it not greyed out then it has like no audio quality or lower or no change. It may require specific content file formats to work or something dumb? But selecting previously selectable optional codecs from LG or selecting system defaults arent an option it always tries to default to lousy awful disgusting AAC or SBC even with HD audio toggled. But most importantly the DEVA PRO and the R9's come with a good audio cable but the larger gold jack on the end thats removable is SUPER LOUSY. I have no clue why it looks almost identical to the others i have which mostly sound great but some sound super lousy theres often a subtle colour difference hard to spot but thats maybe just new vs much much older? are people stealing these and swapping with fakes?
Thanks for the detailed comparison with Sundara. I have expected R9 to be dynamic ver. of Sundara, but it seems it sacrificed crisp and sharp notes of Sundara to get more bass. IMO, while Sundara has adequate bass, I didn't think it lacks punchiness and amount of sub-bass. In terms of Mid-range and Treble, how would you compare this to Sundara? Also, R is on sale @ $369 now. With given price, will your rating of R9 change?

As per your comment, I decided move on. I think you really should post your writing somewhere in reddit of headfi. With sales on R9 @ $369, a lot of people seeking for reviews, which yours will be appreciated by many.
Yeah, it DEFINITELY sounds like you have a different set of R9's than mine... I own SonyZ7M2, Fostex Th900MK2, AKG712pro, various others, picked the wired version of these up for $369, and I still can't believe how good they sound, I don't get ANY of problems your having, also I drive mine through a THXAAA789 amp, IFI xDSD Gryphon, and also LGV60 using PowerAmp App with perimetric and shelving EQ and qobuz... With that said, these so far are my new top performer, these things had me slobbering all over myself, awesome dynamics and slam with ZERO distortion at stupid levels, all while still being anylitical, and maintaining superior instrument separation, with tight bass that digs deep in layers and richness that outshines my TH900's... I also broke them in for 3 days b4 even putting them on my head...
@@genshikenguy Negative… My experience is definitely different!🤣 The sound I get is nothing short of breath taking, I have a long list of tweaks I made on my V60 Developer options to complement PowerAmp, and only the EQ section is used, as I run directly to my THX789 amp…

Would have never bought these for 600 - but on sale now for $369 I'm giving them a shot. Honestly based on what others are saying, I think that's probably still too much.I fear that once I get them I'm going to say, pretty good, but probably should have been $300 max. $250 is probably about right, like Z said in vid. Will update when I get them.
Update - so Amazon just is making it look like it's on sale when it's not. In reality it just is the wired-only version that doesn't have the BT dongle, yet they still present it as though it's regularly priced 599, and there's no option to order the wireless one at all. I may have to just send it back.

@@lucidmonkey3591 I cancelled my order - never got them. If they go on sale for real, I may reconsider them again. Sort of mixed reviews out there for them so they've sort of fallen down on my list of wants.

No matter how well it sounds, I just don't like Hifiman as a company, the R10 launch was atrocious, How the CEO acted there Is just smug advertisement, he singlehandedly made R10 a niche product. And anyone wondered why R9 exactly has that color and have a black background on its box? They just oozes the bad image of old Chinese manufacturer's stereotypes.

I'm usually not performing gruelling tasks with my higher grade cans, pretty much home studio, office, or work office... so I'm not quite sure where this heavy abuse and wear and concern about durability/construction really comes in. Seems like a bit of a manufactured concern to me.

When you say your phones "fell apart" what model were they? What exactly happened... I doubt they literally just broke into pieces on their own

I always click on these videos wanting information but forgetting who this guy is. I just can't stand the obnoxious sexism. I'm really curious to know if this guy acts like an incel in real life or if it's a persona.
Neither you nor I know him personally so we won’t know for sure. He does have a partner I believe (or did - I don’t know current status), so I suspect he’s playing to his audience a little. If you think this is bad, you should check out the rest of TH-cam channels. Or the internet in general. I may be misreading your intentions, but at the risk of being off base, you may want to pass on the outrage since none of the sexism is directed at you personally obviously.
@@mensrea1251 I do generally just watch another video when the option exists but it's fairly frequent that a headphone has only been reviewed by one of two people, giving me no alternative.
As far as your comment on "pass on the outrage, his sexism isn't about [me] personally", I think that's dismissive of the problem though. If people disparage the idea of women (or any group for that matter) that ideology surely is applied to women in the real world. And while he may get to know a woman and realize that his views don't reflect on that one person, he still has the rest of womanhood to denigrate and view as a tool for his own satisfaction. Ideologies affect real people.
