Dave Draper at 75 just became my “new” inspiration to get back to the gym 3 times/week at my current age of 67. I started weight training at 14. That and playing jazz guitar (stayed at amateur status on both) are still in my blood after all these years, raising a family and a 40 year career as aTool and Die Maker/Machinist. Thanks for this video and thanks to Dave Draper.
It's no secret that Dave went down a dark path in his 40's and very nearly died from recreational drug abuse and alcohol. His story of how he pulled himself together and regained his health and perspective is very inspirational.
I remember seeing Dave Draper in many of the bodybuilding magazines of the era and also from "Dave the Gladiator" show which I watched regularity. Years later in 1969 I drove to Weider Barbell company about 20 to 30 miles from Pasadena, California to buy some weights and much to my astonishment Dave Draper was the store employee who processed my order. Dave was friendly, helpful and asked me about my recent military service. That was a day to remember. Thank you Dave, I wish you well.
I worked the front desk at his gym in Santa Cruz 2009. He came in daily and worked his way through a impressive routine. Much respect for this warrior.
Dave's a good guy. My family and I met him and his wife on several occasions. We even went out for lunch once and he made my kids feel very much at ease. He's one of the humblest and down to earth person. The bodybuilding word is blessed to have this legend.
I agree. I have corresponded with him on occasion and he seems to be an authentic person. He is very candid about his past alcohol and drug use and preaches against it.
Sad, but true! Who could ever forget that infamous pic of a shirtless Arnold on vacation in the Caribbean. Yikes! Arnold was the epitome of sagging muscles, and it's just a reminder that 99.9% of us will fall victim to Father Time. Apparently Dave Draper is the 0.01% who has beat Father Time...for now.
Love Dave Draper and very happy he's still with us today. Came out years ago that he has an alcohol and drug problem so let's celebrate his sobriety and appreciate his fantastic physique. I've battled both and Dave is an inspiration to me.
I was just thinking about him a few days ago trying to remember his name. Being 79 myself I appreciate that he stayed in good condition and works out regularly
Dave Draper inspired me to get into the weights back in the days was not Arnold, Dave also did an episode in the tv series "The Beverly Hillbillies" I remember granny in the show was saying he had so many bumps all over him meaning he had so many muscles but I also remember him in the movie "Don't Make Waves" with Tony Curtis, Dave was the best as I said he inspired me to get into the weights, wish him always the best🙏
Excellent post by Nick's Strength and Power. Very pleased you chose Dave Draper: the gentleman's gentleman of the bodybuilding sport. And what amazing shape he's in today. Him and Albert Beckles.
I had the privilege of training in the same gym as Dave in 1981-1982 in Santa Cruz. "Power Unlimited" was owned by Ron Morris and his wife. Ron was a force of his own in powerlifting, and both Dave and Ron were great mentors, and always generous with their training tips. A bunch of us would work out in the morning and then come back around 5, when Ron closed his welding shop across the street, just to watch him train. Power Unlimited was home to many bodybuilders, powerlifters, and even professional wrestlers and triathletes (it was the early days of the sport back then). Great memories.
lucas birmingham he's not a real athlete by any means you idiot. He has some athleticism but not at all enough to be considered one. Bodybuilding is an ART, not a sport
Shawn 71 nah man dudes in my gym use way more gear and still ego lift and still look like shit. Most I don’t think learned how to train before juicing.
I’ve always admired Dave Draper and I’ve been signed into his on line blog for at least 9 years, there so many bodybuilders from my era (the 80’s) that still impress today. I’m 52 and still retain a good 80% of the muscle I gained. If you train hard, eat well and then train some more the results are there to be had. Well done Dave.....keep bombing!!
Not sure what you meant when you said Draper started bodybuilding at age 21. He actually started bodybuilding when he was 10 years-old and was already appearing in the magazines by the time he was a teenager. Draper won his first contest when he was 21 years-old.
I'm so glad you put this video of dave draper. back in the sixties when I first started to lift weights he was one of my favorites along with frank zane, Sergio olive, lou ferrigno and of course Arnold Schwarzenegger. it's been a pleasure seen dave again, thank you nick.
I am not Dave's age but can remember back seeing him in ads on the back cover of comic books when I was a kid. To this day, no other lifter so personified the healthy beach lifestyle of that era like the Blonde Bomber.
Dave Draper is the “continuing man of body building” and healthy lifestyle into his seventies. In this respect he has beaten Arnie and Franco and the rest if that crew. His internet site is just fantastic for those involved with weights training because the advice there comes from the real life long desire to train. Dave maybe something of an unsung hero in muscle world but to me he is the best due to his continuing dedication to life.
Dave I remember seeing you in books and magazines back in the eighties and look incredible today in fact you look the best out of all the body builders you used to compete against all those years. You are an inspiration - amazing - well done.
1970 I was 17. Dave Draper stole my imagination and created a desire to achieve greatness within me . I'll be 65 in Nov. Reg Park and Bill Pearl and of course the Austrian Oak, also shared a place inside my life I translated THAT commitment and command and control into everything I put my hand to. I thank God for them all I'm still "Hittin' It", 6 and seven days a week Big thanks to this TH-cam presenter for taking me down memory lane. Another big thanks to Robert Kennedy Who published my blurbs and outfitted my basement with The Works. I miss his English accent and lovely personality. He too helped me a lot.
I’m so glad you mention the art of posing. It really is important and makes bodybuilding an expression of the athletes personality. It’s about more than just shaping the body. Its how you display the finished form.
Dave was one of first favorite BBs growing up and was an Extreme Influence on me. P.S. Dave Draper played himself in the October 25, 1967 episode of The Beverly Hillbillies titled, "Mr. Universe Muscles In," in which Granny thinks that he is sick with "the barbell bloat." The story line included Draper suggesting that Ellie May is pretty enough to be "Miss Universe" which hilariously had the Clampetts thinking since he was Mr. Universe, that he wanted to take Ellie May for a wife, not understanding that "Universe" was not his last name. Cut and pasted from Wiki and stored in my memory all these years after watching the original airing episode.
I'm 50 and I've always loved Dave Draper, those guys were huge in my growing up. Arnolds Encyclopedia was and still is something that I've always cherished. What a testament to the sport to see the old guys still looking like this. I'll tell you, I always always always am a fan of the stomach's of these guys I mean look at the amount of real honest work that these guys did. I'm old school and I am proud to say we did stuff honest always. We were always trying new stuff back in the early 90s I remember we used to take this stuff called Hot Stuff, used to take shit loads of Liver pills and drinking Ultra Fuel, and weight gain powders and shakes. That's all we did, and we always had fun and never had to worry about side effects of the Roids, I remember when Lyle Alzado died and we were crushed. The saddest things in life were watching things like that happen to people you loved growing up. My best friend that was my workout buddy for 25 years got super depressed in 2011 and made a really bad choice one night and drank 3 bottles of Vodka and passed out in a field no more than an 1/8th of a mile from his house and froze to death in a field, but that's another sad story. But these guys were our hero's and Lou, Frank, Arnold, Draper, Platz, and Serge, even Sly these guys I know they did Roids but they for sure didn't have the amount like now and they were nowhere near what it is now. I'm super glad you posted this, it's awesome to see one of the greatest legends to the sport keeping the spirit alive.
Guys a legend......think he was one of those people who responded really well to small doses of gear....like Robbie Robinson and was able to keep healthy over a long period of time while looking amazing....those lat insertions are epic...nice one nick.
In 1977 I purchased an awesome body building book "Here's power for you" and Dave Draper is featured prominently. I have been a hugh fan every since. God bless the double D.
I've heard it from other bodybuilders of that era that Dave could out lift Arnold by a considerable amount. Have chatted with Dave Draper a few times over the years and consider him a very humble and likeable guy. Live long and prosper Blonde Bomber!

Great vid as always Nick! He looks great for 75! That era of bodybuilding was awesome! As an artist I can look at the contest & pose photos of him, Arnold, Zane, Sergio and others all day long and draw and study muscles and see what the human body is capable of. Awesome stuff!
All these kids for years have been trying to jump off buildings onto desks. Turns out to get a WWE contract, all you need to do is,,,, Get featured by nicks strength and power!
Dave was also on the Monkeys TV show, awesome bodybuilder, wonder why no one is trying to get a interview with him ,I bet he has story 's no one has heard before of the golden area
Great video! There’s not a lot out there about older bodybuilders keeping their shape while fighting the natural effects of aging most notably - decreased Testosterone and increased estrogen and cortisol. It would be great to have a few sites like this for us. I am 55 years old and started bodybuilding seriously about 3 years ago (competed last year for the first time) and it would be of great benefit to get diet and exercise tips from these seasoned veterans.

Ok, I did not scroll through all the comments to see if anyone noted this fact....Does anyone remember his appearance on the Beverly Hillbillies? Granny and Uncle Jed diagnosed him with the "barbell bloat", and Granny tried to find a "potion" to fix his medical problem.

Dave Draper competed in an age when even the biggest bodybuilders still looked like human beings, not human-like organisms from another planet.
Sam Tsang when he was 12 his idol was Leroy colbert

Draper had the best forearms of the Golden Era. Everyone wanted a pair like him. Absolute legend.
Travis B Mike Mentzer and Draper with forearms.
It's great to see he's still going strong and working out regularly. Definitely one of the classiest guys in bodybuilding.

Excellent post by Nick's Strength and Power. Very pleased you chose Dave Draper: the gentleman's gentleman of the bodybuilding sport. And what amazing shape he's in today. Him and Albert Beckles.

"athlete", lol nothing athletic about most pro bodybuilders, I bet most of them can't even run 1 mile
Athlete??? Really???

noun
a person who is proficient in sports and other forms of physical exercise. -Wikipedia

stormspinner9000 how can you say that when he embodies the fucking definition? What a fucking moron😂
I think he has one of the best build of all time. Well balanced and evenly distributed.
Damn he's a beast! He looks better than the majority of ego lifters in the gym who are less than half his age!

The blonde bomber!!! I remember him well from early bodybuilding magazines and can’t believe that he is still in such fantastic shape at 75 years old.
He was ahead of his time.... 20 years later he would have produced the best He-Man live action adaptation and cast a big shadow over the Hulkster.

Dolph Ziggler-Lundgren where's Vincent Kennedy McMahon when you need him?
I'm also pretty sure of that.
I've heard it from other bodybuilders of that era that Dave could out lift Arnold by a considerable amount. Have chatted with Dave Draper a few times over the years and consider him a very humble and likeable guy. Live long and prosper Blonde Bomber!
He has one of the best forearms ever!
I have seen a lot of your videos and always enjoy them like this one, 75 and still looks amazing: DAVE DRAPER!!
Man he looks fantastic for a man in his seventies or any age!! Thanks for the video
Glad to see that he is still actively training and looking great !
Thanks for sharing . . .
Dave is one of the all time greats.
Dave is by far my favorite body builder because not every wanna be in the gym knows who he is.He went through a bad drug addiction for several years that kept him from going as far as he could have. And over 6 foot! Much respect.
Look at that fucking back
Drapers back was his best body part- it was massive, watch that episode of him in the Monkees from 1968, you will see how massive it was in that episode....
He looks best among all veteran legendary body builders at the age of 75,long live D. D
i don't know about the 'small amount in the golden age' part. draisin says the people around Arnold ate dbol like candy.
but yeah, draper has always been one of my favorites. such a beautiful and powerful physique.
if u look at it, even "arnold 2.0" Calum has a bit of a blotted gut from steroid use, and none of the golden era guys had that. i doubt anyone would look like Arnold with the little amount they took back then.
SanaySK one my favs also
Körmendy Mátyás The gut isnt steroids, its insulin.
Körmendy Mátyás also calum has no gut, you saying that is incredibly dishonest.
Körmendy Mátyás
On cal its only because he doesnt even seem to aim for a small waist (he doesnt train it to be small). But still he probably takes a lot more because his delts and traps are inflated as hell (due to more androgen receptors). U can see it on every bodybuilder that they have these out of proportion basketball shoulders
Definitely one of the greats! I miss the classic era.
He had a great physic
Dave is one of the most inspirational bodybuilders in the history. .looks really amazing at 75 ..age is just a number. ..Great video buddy. .Thanks for the detailed explanations....best regards from Saudi Arabia 👍👍👍

I appreciate the guys that stay with it .Frank Zane and even Lou.
Passion for it.
When I was a teen, I had a picture of him on my bedroom mirror as inspiration for my own weight lifting practice.
Amazing job !!!! Gr8 research and see where he is now. These doc's are ready for t.v. Thank you for the work.
Don’t make waves is a great movie. I bought it on Amazon. Dave plays a great part in the movie. I highly recommend it as a light comedy.
Thanks for this video...Dave Draper has always been my favorite bodybuilder.
438 thumbs down? why? I really enjoyed this brief synopsis on Draper. Thumbs up!
Excellent video! Thank you for posting it on TH-cam.
As a child I admired Dave Draper's physique
Blessings to Dave, I am very happy to hear he still has it!
Nothing beats hard work
Great video! I am 57 and while never a professional BB, I have always worked out and it shows. Also never to late to start.
Dave was also on the Monkeys TV show, awesome bodybuilder, wonder why no one is trying to get a interview with him ,I bet he has story 's no one has heard before of the golden area
Dave was inspirational when I was a teenager, for me and my friends. And he still Rocks later in life now.
Those pics are from 2005 when he was 63 years old
Correct. A Google search easily confirms your observation.
No fool! Thats him at 75
Thank you for the reality...
Dude you should have a weekly podcast, possibly bring on bodybuilders, powerlifters and other youtubers. I would definitely take in interest in that!
I met dave in 1973 in New York at dan luries wbbg contest he was a guest poser!
