Thank you for this. Dave responded to an email wrote and I'm so glad I saved it. He is an absolute legend!
Although Arnold went on to dominate Golden Era bodybuilding---Dave was for me the very symbol of 60s era bodybuilding and a 60s icon. As a kid I was in awe and like many wanted to look like him. He also seems to have been truly a nice person. RIP
You showedDave in his prime - and what a prime!
He had his problems in the 1970s, but came through that and still looked fantastic in his mid-70s.
Some very amazing photographs that I'd never seen before. Draper's crucifix pose at 6:01 is forever etched in my mind. This was the pose that Weider used back in the 60's to sell his "Crash weight gain formula No.7" in the back pages of "Popular Mechanics".
Thanks. I read his autobiography a few months ago. He had his ups and downs in life but everything worked out in the end. He retired on top and became a born-again Christian along with his wife. I am sure he is up in Heaven right now pumping iron!
Dave was a super nice dude. He and I talked often and wrote back and forth via email, both of us trying to outmotivate the other. He was tough to keeo up with, let alone one up him with words. He was a great writer and thinker. I am still bummed he is no longer with us, but I am thankful for the time and energy he shared with me. I learned a lot, more than just training methodolgy. He definitely had an influence on me and I credit him for changing my perspective on many things, especially my own life/existence and what it really meant. Godspeed Dave.
That was a very fitting tribute to a man who inspired a generation of teenage boys in the late 1960s into the early 1970s to take up bodybuilding. I had all the Weider magazines from back then and spent all my pocket money on them, and milk! Dave was closely associated with the surf culture in his early days, so it was great to hear the instrumental surf-style music playing as the cavalcade of photos passed by.
Godspeed indeed !!! Great tribute , thank you. .. and thank you to Norm Komich . RIP
Nice!
As a personal friend, I am blessed to say that Dave is indeed flying high with Jesus💜 He often liked signing off with GODSPEED…. Thank you for a walk down memory lane👍
Now that was a great tribute! You guys did a fantastic job on the great Dave Draper. I remember him when I was a kid. He was on all kinds of TV shows, showing off his physique. What a legend!
he was very respectful of other bodybuilders,
Nice tribute. Thanks for posting this. The music flowed beautifully with the photos.
Great tribute! Thanks so much for sharing!
I remember him on the Beverly Hillbillies episode. It is till to this day my favorite episode and definite one of the funniest.🏋♂😂
When I was a young boy "66-67"
my father drove me to a small joe Weider outlet in SANTA MONICA on that street that's blocked off from cars now, only for foot traffic.
I wanted to buy some weights and start working out. Guess who was working there---
< Dave Draper along with another co-worker, both sitting on stools behind a counter.
He was the most asinine smart ass jerk I've ever run across IN MY LIFE up to that point in my life. He tried to make a simple purchase of some weights into some BIG DEAL for some reason and trying to get his co-worker to go along with his harasment
of some young guy wanting to buy some weights to start working out. I'll never forget it.
Here was someone I've seen in muscle mags who I looked up to acting like a elementary school yard smart-ass bully towards me because i wanted to purchase a couple of 25 lbs plates, that's what he was there for, to sell equipment for joe weider!
Dave Draper a nice guy-----{ just the opposite 🖕🏻}
I don't think anyone could make training in jeans look better than Mr. Draper did.
He's totally ripped in "Don't Make Waves" along with muscleman Reg Lewis.
I preferred his physique out of them all them. Nothing too much out of proportion.
Dave Draper was one of my big heroes in thec1970s. We all thought.Dave was heir apparent to succeeding Lsrry Scott as Mr. Olympia.
Nobody knows for sure what happened to Dave going into the 1967 Mr. Olympia other than Dave was well off top shape
Nonetheless, was greatly inspired by the blond bomber as were millions of others.
RIP blonde bomber.
I recall seeing him and Arnold in ads for Weider products .I bought weights in the mid 70's and drank the disgusting Weider shakes and nothing happened .Little did I know about steroids .
All American... Mr new Jersey.... blonde bomber
super men
