    We have had some comments on this video instigated by a third party on TH-cam, which we would like to address briefly here.
    1. We welcome criticism; all passions benefit from a multitude of voices, and criticism helps us do our job better. However, we do not condone personal abuse, particularly when that abuse stems from a difference in gender, background, race, religion etc. Life is stressful enough at the moment without our employees and associates logging in to find horrible and highly personal comments from someone they have never met or had any contact with. We hope everyone can agree about this.
    2. All of our branded content and promotional videos are clearly marked as such.
    3. Although it isn't directly relevant to this video, it is being mentioned by some commenters so: we absolutely support the lockdown in place by the UK government regarding coronavirus. Cycling is explicitly permitted by the regulations in place at the time of writing and we are abiding by them at all times. We do not view cycling as an inherently dangerous activity, and by following social distancing at all times we have never placed ourselves or others at risk, and we are riding with extra care in order not to place the NHS under any strain. Moreover, it should not be assumed that videos were filmed on the same day as they were published as we film ahead of time in order to reduce strain on our small team.
    We hope the above makes sense, and we'd like to thank all of our magazine readers, website visitors and TH-cam subscribers for their support during the current coronavirus crisis. We feel that our aim - to inspire, inform and entertain cyclists about their passion - is more important than ever at the moment, and we'll continue to try our hardest to deliver in these difficult times.

      I don’t recall Hambini instigating or coordinating a vandetta, guess people are mature enough to understand the poor quality of your Engineering-science. You are using his (really) questionable language to hide a global technical non-sense from 2 journalists and one guy doing some basic aerowork. Now is is "rude" to anyone missleading cyclists, male, female, person or brand, not exclusively to your journalist.
      On the lockdown, you really need to review your common sense, training roughly 10hrs / week since the 23rd March as your journalist did IS irresponsable. GCN is for example really supporting proper lockdown. Shame on you

      What specific difference do you think matters? The reduce range of yaw angles? This data is still useful for anyone who tends to compete in short (fast) TTs or who is very fast at long TTs or who competes in low wind situations (most road cyclists). Might not be good data for a triathlete (typically more exposed locations, later int he day, slower speeds)

    • @drym3943
      @drym3943 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Why is it wrong. Except the yaw angle i don't see anything wrong with track testing. But if you are a good racer (if not then this video is not for you) that yaw is pretty negligeable.

      And any second year Aerospace or Mechanical Engineer that studies at University knows there is no "real world " air flow or disturbance in a Velodrome.
      And the tech editor Michelle Arthurs-Brennan is a Journalist by training and is a deer in the headlight to Aero Coach and agrees with him endlessly.

      Not saying you're exactly wrong.
      However Ross Brawn had an engineering apprenticeship and Rory Byrne was trained as a chemical engineer. They went on to design some of the best F1 cars of all time. They knew aerodynamics from on hands on experience and real world training.

    • @ArashFallah
      @ArashFallah 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@FLMKane I agree, a degree is not necessarily the sign of competence. However, lack of competence openly displayed with lack of education is disturbing for a so called expert.
      Ross Brown was milling mechanic before he joined F1, then got a job as a milling mechanic at Williams. He was good at he did and showed aptitude for other areas of F1 and in span of six years or so went on to help with design of another F1 car, became a principal.
      Two differentiating part of that story is that he started low and got high in a highly technical field and didn't state clearly wrong ideas to his customers (being the team, drivers, ...). Secondly in his case F1 is highly technical front, one person isn't in charge of aerodynamics, engine, ... it's a collaboration; whereas it doesn't take much order bunch of wheels from China and stick your brands on them and say you're expert. Specially in these times when people buy into everything they see or hear without proper investigation.

    • @FLMKane
      @FLMKane 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From the front the frame would make minimal difference because of rider position being the dominant factor.
      In crosswinds drag would be awful. Forget the aero wheels we know they have more drag.
      HOWEVER round tubes are incredibly draggy in crosswinds due to simple physics. Big fat stagnation point, lots of flow detachment and turbulence. Drag increases exponentially for a round cross section relative to an aero cross section.

    Would the results differ if this test were repeated on an outdoor velodrome? The random vortical component of airflow would be better captured in that environment, while still enabling the test to occur at a steady speed and power on a controlled surface.

    The negativity in this comment section is truly horrendous. I don't know what Hambini said in his video, but if watching him has that kind of effect on you, you should really stop and go for a ride instead.
    I really don't get all the comments saying that "the velodrome isn't comparable to the outdoors"... duh, neither is a wind tunnel. The main difference is yaw angle caused by wind direction, but that was simulated to an extent by having the riders turn their heads. Obviously it is impossible to have accurate and consistent aero measurements on the road, and a controlled environment can never be exactly similar, indeed it is meant to remove some variables from the equation.

    We know that poc and lazer have the fastest helmets. Why would you waste so much time trying to find marginal differences between middle of the road aero helmets. Position is 99% of being aero any advantage a helmet has over the other could be completely negated by getting the rider to bend their neck and hold their chin one degree lower.

    Why on earth would you even consider how your helmet performs when looking sideways? I don't time that parameter, but my rides are mostly being done facing forwards. So should anyone who is eager to save those 5W. Just doesn't add much credibility in my book.
    Would have been ALOT more interesting testing them with wind from the sides; yaw angle from 0-90 degrees.

    First off, it should be unnecessary to say this but I have no connection with Cycling Weekly or Aerocoach (or Hambini) though I've met Xav and I'm familiar with the testing method that he uses.
    Second, I've done a fair amount of testing outdoors on real roads under real world conditions, and also on the velodrome in much more controlled conditions -- and also have observed wind tunnel tests of the same equipment. In general, the results from all three are very close -- the differences are in the amount of time it takes and how easy it is to test different setups, not in particularly in the CdA you get. For example, a nice thing about testing on the road or velodrome is that your legs and body are moving and you're turning your head left and right and up and down whereas in the tunnel you're typically much more static. That said, the proof of a pudding is in the eating of it, and the predictions of speed for power you get in the tunnel or in the velodrome (or in field tests) match up very well against actual performance.
    Third, one needn't be an aerodynamicist to *measure* aerodynamic drag, just as a physician needn't be an electrical engineer or trained in fluid dynamics to measure heart rate. The people who designed the Track Aero System used in this test are indeed engineers (with PhDs in Aeronautical Engineering), statisticians, and physicists.
    In summary, I think this video is actually pretty well done, and there is good information here.

  • @willo7979
    @willo7979 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    5:11 Dr Aerocoach: If it was completely closed all the way round, then any airflow around the front will then separate and then increase the drag.
    5:46 Tech writer: You can swap it (lazer) for a fully closed option, which will obviously be the fastest.

    5:12 Dr. Xavier Disley "you need to have some venting to it because as the air hits the front of the helmet there is a high pressure area around the front so really you want some kind of vents to allow the air to channel through. If it was completely closed all the way around then any air flow around the front would separate and increase the drag" 5:46 Michelle "Fully closed option which will obviously be the fastest." You have an "expert" who has no aerodynamics expertise (other than stating a company called Aerocoach), testing in a "static" environment of a velodrome and claiming that that replicates the "real world" where side winds are an actual reality and ride in a "non-aero" fashion. I'm glad I haven't yet bought any #LeCol clothing, 'cos if they sponsor you they must be desperate...
