  • This is it! The Final Test in the Wind Tunnel Series. The fastest helmet and more importantly how they all compare. Thanks for watching and indulging me in this project. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did, appreciate all the comments and interactions, some valuable information that I'll take next time into my next testing foray.
Just a note to say this test was conducted before Giro and Rudy released their new helmets, sod's law I believe it's called! And I wished I'd got hold of a Lazer Volante also as I think it would've stacked up well.

    Comprehensive test. Thanks for sharing.
My 19-year old son 183 cm tall, 73-74 kg was tested on the velodrome with a help of Notio Konect by a qualified aero expert, who is an hour amateur world record holder in his category (Piotr Klin) and is also testing on Sliverstone velodrome and wind tunnel.
    Helmet results:
    1. POC Tempor
    2. Giro Aeroheah Ultimate, Kask Bambino Pro Evo. We had no access to newest aero Visor. 0.001 CdA Slower
    3. Specialized S-Works TT, 0.003 CdA Slower
    4. Specialized S-Works TT5 with sock, 0.004 CdA Slower
BTW his CdA on the road is close to 0.185 on his 2014 S-Works Shiv TT and Velotex PRO8 skinsuit. On the track 0.165 on Cervelo T4 (4:20 in 4 km IP)

A fantastic series, thank you for your efforts in putting this together. I enjoyed every single episode and definitely learned something in each viewing along the way. I have been thinking about your comments of using TT helmets for general riding/racing and I cannot help but visualize an entire peloton roll down the road with everyone wearing the Specialized TT5. That might not be the best look for the sport of cycling to attract a broader audience!
While this does not have to be wind-tunnel based, it would be great to see you put together a video discussing how the average cyclist/weekend warrior could optimize their approach to efficiency. Josh Portner/Dillon Johnson did something like that a while back, perhaps an updated collaboration with Josh on something like that from your perspective?

Alex, apart from the previously mentioned disappointment over the almost embarrassing lack of embarrassing tabs open in your browser, I must say the more geeky and techy you get, the more I like your channel. This has been some of the best content so far. Would love to see something similar with either types of training or nutrition during rides (both training and races). A bit like Dylan Johnsons techy stuff, but with more examples, more british accent, more embarrassing browser tabs, and maybe a backwards-hat-Dylan-cameo!

Great video/video series. It would have been super sweet to have pictures of the helmets beside the names on the graph and it may also have been nice to see pictures of the helmets in place on the graph. Seeing the relative fits might give some insight into why certain helmets work.

Would be interested to see similar helmet test on a road bike in a mix of positions. I wouldn't be surprised if in a more 'all day' road riding position an aero road helmet was faster than a TT helmet?
I also don't know how it could be done in a tunnel but how a TT style helmet would effect someone sprinting would be interesting. the amount of movement may make a smaller road helmet better.

The series has been awesome. As someone who tries to get his mates faster on their tt bikes (national/tour de l'avenir level) I really enjoyed how you shared the thought process and hypothesis behind almost every aspect of wind tunnel testing and results. I will probably never get into one of those places and will stick with test segment results for now but it's always interesting to have feedback from someone as knowledgeable as you.
I'm still surprised by the results of the poc tempor tho, it would have been my go to for larger shoulder individuals based on the assumption of "the more helmet the better" but hey, assumption are still assumption at the end of the day.
Cheers from France, loved every single bit of it

Legendary series. Loved it. And you say "no-one is TTing on GP all seasons" but I think if people knew how much it saved they'd probably bother to get a set of training wheels and race day wheels, although I will likely be doing any TTs I attend this year with CX tyres because I'm not going to win anyway, and comparative times are good.

Out of the new age helmets I do like the Sweet Protection for some reason. I used the MDT back in the 90’s and swore by it. Wasn’t designed as a safety hat, purely aero and I still have it as an ornament. I wouldn’t say the Sweet P would work on me now as I’m lap of honouring at age 63 and it appears I’m losing mass 🤷🏼‍♂️ so I’ll stick with my Carnac stubby thingy and my old Met Pac…
    Excellent series of video’s, 👏🏼
The overshoes must make a difference as I won’t be buying another pair of shoes either lol. Think I’m done with trying to gain/save aero/watts whatever and I’ll start spending money on something else 😉
Best of luck for the coming season 👍

Any thoughts on the UCI effectively banning the Specialized TT5? My son bought one of these for US nationals this year, but had to send it back since it will be banned after April 1. He confirmed this with both USAC and Specialized. This kind of flew under the radar as media focused on the sock being non-essential, but the reality is that the Pro teams will not be allowed to use it because removing the sock is modifying the helmet. My son confirmed this with Specialized directly when he returned the helmet. Since they (Specialized) do not have a model without the sock, and all the testing and approvals were done with the sock, they are scrambling to get something developed and approved for the pro teams this season.

Just to visualise how much of a difference you think curved and flat back looks like, could you suggest a few riders to check photos of, from plane flat to curved like a cat? Thanks. I really enjoyed the series. The one thing that seems odd is your 0.209 CdA. That seems awfully high. Is that because the SSE wind tunnel doesn’t tare the fixtures or is there some other explanation. I can’t help but think you have a pretty solid idea what your CdA is based on the testing for Body Rocket and trips to other wind tunnels. Would you care to share the range of your CdA estimates?

I've seen anything from 0.17 to 0.23 depending on who's doing the testing to be honest. I've never looked at the number in it's own entity and trusted it. I only ever focus on reducing it for a particular aero session on that day.

Yeah it's not as cut and dry as that, The % is of the cda gain. As the lrelationshiop between speed, aerodynamics and power isn't linear at all then the results can be calculated after finding the gain. Best Bike Split is a great tool to use. Thanks!
