      Smith Jetstream TT. Just bought it for a 70.3 and full IM this fall. If I'm still a midpack athlete, I might sell it; it doesn't seem meaningful to have expensive equipment and gadgets unless you're competitive.

      Thanks for the video, literally just bought a Met Manta Mips (the Black and Red, looks sweet too), so good to know the penalty isn't too significant. I wanted a helmet that would be good for training and races, and as I am doing Triathlon more for fun, comfort trumps absolute performance. Love the magnetic clip on it too. Like with the rest of my gear, I know that I am never going to win anything, so having super space age aero gear would make me feel a bit of a plum. The middle ground choices seem like where I should be spending my bucks.

      Tri helmet with a visor when it rains to keep my glasses clean. Otherwise, an Oakley Aro5 road helmet

    I’ve been meaning to say for some time now that James as a GTN presenter is making me want to stick to this channel! (The others are also good but that you already knew :-) )

    Hi Mark, thanks for the video, I just finished watching your new TV series "The Gentleman" and thought you played the character of the Duke very well. Indeed you are a man of many talents.

    Awesome video guys. Good to see you cutting down on the tacky not so subtle product placement and focusing on content.

    When wearing the ful aTT helmet I noticed a large gap between the rear and the back. Also pointing down. The TT helmet works best when the helmet and the back are a continuous surface.

    I have two things to add. If I get too hot, I take off the visor and flip it up. The wind on my face works for all the cooling I needed when it’s hot enough. Second, my position is low enough that I can’t see through my sunglasses in a normal road helmet because the top frame blocks my view peering up. I would have to buy a pair of sunglasses without a top frame, or use my giro aero road helmet that also has a magnetic visor and I can see through. But in my tests that giro helmet is like 18 watts slower for me than the TT helmet, it must be really bad for my head. And it kind of makes you look like toad from Mario without any ear coverings.

  • @csaba675
    @csaba675 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Thanks this was insightful! I wish you’d compare the normal road helmet as well. I’d guess there is also a similar (marginal) time gap..

    A pity the MET Codatronca have only been mentioned but not included in the test.
    It would be intrigueing to observe a test run with deliberate head movements to see how this impacts the aero performance of the helmet types.

    I find it very difficult to ride aero bars, mainly through lack of confidence in my ability, and therefore ride mainly on the hoods with occasionally on the drops. Due to that body position will there be any benefits from changing my current road helmet to an aero one instead?

  • @nightsfalling
    @nightsfalling 2 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @magnemmar4869

    You should have done an additional test with more realistic head movement added in. Look to the side, raise your head position, etc.

  • @benfinesilver2250

    Pog uses the Met Trenta even though it is slower. It points to the Manta having poor airflow. The temperature comparison being similar to the TT helmet would back this up.

  • @flip110119

    So there’s no point in a full aero helmet if you’re only racing a sprint or Olympic distance?

    • @JimCullen
      @JimCullen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The faster you go, the greater the marginal gains from an aero helmet. So it's still worthwhile in an Olympic or Sprint, as long as it's legal (not a drafting event).

    • @Alex-kr7zr
      @Alex-kr7zr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JimCullen Wait, a TT helmet is illegal on a drafting event? Might be the killer argument for going for the aero road helmet if you only choose one.

    • @JimCullen
      @JimCullen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Alex-kr7zr correct. TT helmets cannot be used in drafting events. I believe it's a safety thing: they catch wind more, and they're a big pointy thing that might not go well in a crash.
      That said, if you're only doing triathlons, it's _very_ unlikely you'll be doing anything draft legal. I recently looked into the options and at least near me, the only way to do a draft legal triathlon is to have a professional licence, and _then_ apply for a draft-legal licence on top of that. So as far as most of us are concerned, triathlon == non-drafting.

    • @Alex-kr7zr
      @Alex-kr7zr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JimCullen Good to know, so that's not a consideration then. Well, maybe if you want to do group rides, might be silly to do group rides with a TT helmet.
