  • How do you know it's junk when you're decluttering and organizing your home? How do you know it's junk if the stuff still works or is useful?
    On today's Ask a House Cleaner, Angela Brown tackles tips on junk, hoarding disorder, and spring cleaning.
    How do you know it's junk? In her KonMarie Method of minimalism decluttering, the infamous Marie Kondo asks, "does it bring you joy?"
    Joy or not, it's clutter if you're not using it. Get rid of junk. Stop living in a messy house with these organization hacks.

    I'm pretty good with this stuff, but none of us are ever perfect. you have to be SO vigilent with coffee mugs, if you get a new one, you have to get rid of one, that's the rule, otherwise they seem to reproduce prolifically.
    actually i do clean out candle jars, and make new candles with leftover bits, and use the jars for various uses, but i also had quite a few ugly ones, so i've literally just gotten up and thrown them in the recycle bin. that feels good!

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I love that you were willing to try to use the last bit of candles by molding them into another - and I also applaud your decision to toss the excess once you had depleted the candle source. Hats off and high five for these conscious decluttering choices.

      @@AskAngelaBrown i am a great 1800s Victorian Frugal Wife, haha. We had a bunch of cheap candles i'd bought for a party and still had them lurking about (about 20), thinking i'd use them again, but really they were so cheap, no fragrance and looking shabby. I feel bad for the waste and will never buy such a thing again, it's way smarter to invest in solar lights, which is what i do now.
      oh thanks for the reply, i love your no-nonsense approach (which I don't really need, but i hate all those other fluff millenial channels).
      also, whilst thrifting the other day both my daughter and i picked up a cassette player. she got a terrible cd/cassette player "boombox" (i swear i had the same thing in the 90s), and i got a 1960s cassette deck that will plug into my 1960s record player i recently bought on Marketplace. trust me, there's a market for some old tech! (yeah, your zip drive is not included in that !)

    Lol. My hubby said if I Decluttered some of our separate set of pots, dishes and pans for Passover, he would declutter some of his VCR tapes.
    All the decisions were so much easier after we decided we really didn’t want to have people over for seder. No big meals! So a set of 4 dishes is fine. Can declutter the other 4 for charity.
    Im getting rid of 2 flatware sets, a silver meat platter with groves.. keeping just enough for the week of Passover for eating and cooking. Im trying to figure if I should get rid of the small cheap fry pan and just use the large.
    We want to get rid of at least one tote of Passover dishes. I think we have 5! Hubby had to wash everything also. We are trying to simplify our lives. We are getting too old for this!
    Hubby got rid of 16 VCR tapes. I don’t know why he doesn’t get rid of more. We can get everything on Amazon fire stick

    I have been binge-watching this channel for a few days (really binge-listening as I drive, cook and clean). I would like to see you do a video on a type of hoarder that I'm sure you have encountered but no one seems to talk about. My mother always kept a very clean and tidy home save for short periods when she was busy or ill. She went shopping a lot but donated several lawn sized trash bags to Goodwill every couple months. It was usually stuff she bought at Goodwill. But when she felt overwhelmed with clutter she threw out needed things. She threw out dishes. These were in a cabinet and bothering no one. Sure enough two days later we had to go buy new dishes with money we didn't have to spend and we got a lower quality of dishes than we had before. So while I understand that perhaps most hoarders are emotionally overly attached to stuff, some people on the hoarder lite end of the scale will get into purging fits and will go way too far. I wish there were a video here for this content because it would be the next best thing to having you by my mother's side.
    Edit: I can't remember the last time that I donated anything to a charity shop because I buy mindfully and use up stuff until it isn't usable for anyone. One exception is children's dress clothes and shoes that they outgrow.

After blowing up a modest yet loud 1-Amp guitar speaker at around 3am with my ex using a wrong adaptor - we are both shite at playing guitar, so no doubt my neighbours cheered - I recycled a whole bunch of my own during my last purge of this type of stuff! Sadly for me, it has become difficult to get rid of things because I do actually find uses for them. I don't mean alternate uses. After years of being poor, I finally have some money to spend. I recently lost 30 pounds after eight years of trying. I lost it by default, (my physical job). I did not diet. I now can wear all the size 14's I kept for years. I only wear classic clothing and kept only the best items. Some of my 14's I enjoyed for a few months. It was wonderful until I lost a few more pounds. The "skinny" clothing are now too big. I'm between a 12 and 14. A few pounds up and I'm back into the 14's again (the one's I love so much). Choosing what to get rid of is extremely difficult because of the double whammy, keeping them just in case and then actually using them again.

    Everytime you have a full declutter every 6 months it wants doing again it’s so exhausting it’s amazing how much you do get rid of every 6 months in our house it’s towels and bedding god how many towels does one need it’s a joke just decluttered them so am hoping no more going to get added

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It can feel exhausting when decluttering becomes a recurring task every six months. It's surprising how much we accumulate over time, even with items like towels and bedding. Sometimes it can be frustrating to have to do it again and that is understandable. Remember, decluttering is an ongoing process, and periodic assessments can help maintain a clutter-free environment. By staying mindful of what you truly need and resisting unnecessary additions, you can reduce the accumulation of excess items in your home. Best of luck in maintaining your clutter-free space!

      It's great that you found some free stuff from your neighbor, but now you're left with a lot of items that you consider junk. Sorting through the items and identifying what you genuinely find useful or valuable can help declutter your space. Consider donating some things to local charities or giving them to others who might appreciate them. Remember, quality over quantity is important. Take this as an opportunity to reflect on your needs and find a balance in your possessions. Good luck with decluttering!

      Nice idea but it concerns me that the wrong people might target your house if you have good stuff to give away. I'd prefer to drop it off and donate it to a preferred charity.

    There are actually luggage repair shops that you can take your luggage to and they will repair it for you. There are 12 in my area.

      I think the point is that you should crack on and repair the thing or get rid of it. It is just frustrating to open up the Christmas stuff and find the thing that you were going to fix but it is broken and it falls into disuse but still takes up storage. It needs to get repaired quickly.
      We have replaced parts in our car (a handle to adjust the height of the seat) and kitchen appliances ( a sandwich press) with wooden handles, used metal plates to make new supports. Repairs are great and often times don't take up a lot of time, but things get out of sight and out of mind.

      May I suggest that you speak with your family now about such things? When my Mom and Grandma passed away (they lived in the same house together and each was a collector of different items,) I did not want or need their collections. I still have all the fond memories in my heart and in photos. But because I don't like to dust, I prefer to not keep very much stuff (antique or not) in my home. Your family may feel differently than I do. It's best to speak with them. ❤

      Hindasound, Great tip! Depending on how old the grandchildren are they may already know what items they would love.

    How do you clean a plastic shower liner, especially the yellow border at the bottom from showering?

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In a washing machine with a 1/2 cup of white vinegar. Run a cycle and then hang back in the shower to dry and open all the way so it can drip dry. The vinegar should clean it. And if it's yellowing from age or something else and doesn't come clean, it may be time to replace the plastic shower liner. 💛

      @@AskAngelaBrown Ohh..I was hoping to avoid unhooking the stuff..(LOL) !! Using vinegar what I needed to know..I was unsure. The yellow is not aging. It runs across the shower end to end and begins on the top edge exactly where the bathtub starts, then continues downward til the end of the plastic. Thank you, Angela..I clean my friend's (endless) house and use all of your suggestions and advice. Bless you!
