Finally! A reviewer who "gets" the M suspension setup in the Z4M and doesn't rave about it being too hard. It does what a sports car should do, handle brilliantly. M Division aren't stupid. They set this car up for spirited open road driving, not cruising the rough city streets.

I'd been pining for a Porsche ever since, but today is a brand new day, and I am seriously reconsidering my abandonment of the corvette lineup. The Z06 seems to be stirring up quite a buzz these days. I've maintained a longstanding fear of the stigma that comes along with an aging corvette owner, envisioning myself looking something akin to Stanley in the movie Friday. The C6 Z06 set great track times when it was released and still competes today. Just look at the Top Gear lap board and what it beat. It ran 7:22’s at the Ring in its day. Put seats and r compounds on it like today’s cars and the game changes. The comments about lack of track ability are bizarre. The leaf spring comments discredited the entire review. It’s not a finesse car, but it wins races. The other cars are newbie driver friendly and make you feel fast. Feeling fast doesn’t win races.

As a current BMW owner, and former Corvette owner, I can not overemphasize how important the tires are to the Corvette. I had a C5 Vette with stock runflats and about 20k miles on the odometer, and they were terrible, the car slipped and slided all over the place. For a time I believed all the people that trashed Corvettes for not being able to turn, and in the rain the thing was nearly undriveable. Then, one day, I decided to get some new tires, even though the stock ones still looked brand new. I got the best summer tires you could buy at the time - and it was a totally new car. The car suddenly had remarkable cornering ability, in the rain it just stuck to the road - it was truly an amazing difference. Having owned several BMW 4-series now, two optioned out with the M-sport package, etc - I can say the BMW handles better and is much more precise - but in terms of raw cornering ability, the Corvette would likely come out on top. It's really a different feeling, just depends on what you like - the BMW is much more surgical, in traffic I like in traffic how the car just does whatever you want and is exactly where you want it. The Corvette, meanwhile, was much more fun, but required more attention for sure. I will certainly agree that BMW has much better interiors, much better leather, etc. The Corvette meanwhile is competing at a much lower price for the amount of engine you're getting.

I own a C6 Z and also looked at the Porsche among other cars when i bought my Vette back in 2012. I think you guys are being a little harsh on the Vette. The floorboard is actually carbon fiber, but some balsa wood is used in between the carbon layers to keep weight down. The leaf spring design is also not what many people think. Its a single transverse mounted composite leaf spring that was used to get rid of un-sprung weight and keep the center of gravity lower. People often think these design elements were cost cutting measures, but they in fact are the opposite. They were more expensive design elements incorporated for the sake of performance.

I want to know the car and I can dance through turns. Cus there’s trees and cliffs if you fuck it up round here. OK Gentlemen, that was a fun review. I have owned 8 Corvettes from a 1964 i bought in 1966 365 HP 4 speed that at 140 felt like an poor airplane. To my my current 2014 Z51. And was able to drive a nice M3 and a 911 Carrera over the years. Your bare bones assessment is right. BUT, we here in American have been unshackled from drive what you bought. We change our cars. We have a community of aftermarket parts to help our factory products. And we are not so afraid of getting greasy fingernails to dig in and make the changes ourselves. So like a 64 i owned had 468 Cu In Blown Big Block that could cover the quarter mile in under 10 seconds. Or the 81 I owned with a Vortech Supercharger, 4 speed OD Auto and AC with CD changer beat everything and got 25 MPG highway. The 98 LS1 with 140,000 miles stick, 3.73 gear and intercooled Supercharger had 525HP yes it would NOT turn nicely. But you laugh at the Z06, My 2007 White Z06 was a dream. It had the power but it needed better Shocks, so added QA1 adjustable shocks and retuned the engine for more low end torque and it was a beast, that would lose traction in 3rd gear. It required full attention to make good turns, But frankly America is so big we can go straight for thousands of miles. Now take either of your three cars to a shop and price out routine maintenance. One thing I learned to do was get the oil analyzed. In my 2007 Z06, we had a few PPMs of titanium on the first oil change. At 20,000 miles I had hundreds of PPM Titanium. I paid to have the heads pulled and took the heads to GM and they spent $7,000 replacing them. Yes the guide were made wrong but GM fixed it and the car lived without eating any valves. Its true what you say about Corvette and roll your eyes interior, turning, etc. But, we can change it easily, we can afford the potential and in the end we can configure what we want. You would not want to pay for a new engine in any of the 3 cars you tested. But, like my 98 I pulled the engine, rebuilt it, supercharged it, upgraded the clutch and rear end, added Oil coolers and better shocks in my 2 car garage by myself without selling my wife or getting a second mortgage. I wonder the ratio of GM to Porsche to BMW in Australia??

It was keeping pace with 997 GT3s with the proper setup (ie tires/pads/alignment). Just like the ZR1 video I find this highly biased against American cars. The C5 Z06 (C5.R was snacking on German cars on the international racing scene). It was already a world beater, and this was the sequel. Transverse composite leaf springs, titanium valves, composite panels. About 3100-3200lbs with 505hp and 7000k rpm redline. Then they talk about dropped valves but leave out the issues with 987.1 IMS bearing, and the S54 obviously not the best engine for longevity either. Balsa wood has also been used in other high end cars to save weight, but they're making it out like this is the same as an 18th century frigate. It's wild how many younger video creators are getting C6s these days. Ten or so years ago I read that used C6s were hard to find (at used car prices) because the Corvette was the dream car for many people who were young back in the 70s but a new 'Vette was a bit out of reach financially, so in the late 2000s when those people were retiring they decided to live out their dreams and get a new C6. What they didn't realize was that in their younger days automakers weren't exactly truthful about the power their cars were putting out, so they thought 1970s 400HP was the same as 2000s 400HP. They quickly discovered that a new C6 was brutally fast compared to what they thought they were getting, so not wanting to end up in a hospital kept the C6 in the garage. Now - for reasons I don't care to guess at - these cars are finally being re-sold in terrific condition and with low miles.
I'm not even a Corvette guy but I love that these cars which were mostly not being driven are now getting a second chance with younger people who really enjoy them.

I must concur completely. I too have a 2006 Z4 3.0 coupe, a jdm version (rhd) up here in Vancouver and it's spectacular! 265hp is nothing these days, but I've never been in a situation where I've felt it was lacking or 'slow'. It's just a visceral hoot and the gearing is optimum at really showcasing the brilliant N52B30. A fair bit lighter than the Z4M engine (magnesium block, I believe?) - it's better balanced and on paper, less than 1 second slower to 60. Bonus - a lot less maintenance on these! Typical/normal cooling system and suspension fixes that will eventually need doing (Amy bmw guy knows this) and eventually the oil leaks to be tended to. But the engines are near bulletproof. I even got 36 (Cdn) mpg on a highway run to LA last year doing 'sprightly' speeds all the way! I was stunned. Even city driving is decent, getting around 22-24 in the city. I also love that up in Canada these aren't officially sold here. Although oddly enough they do sell the Z4M?! So when the 18 months I've had mine I have seen one other one on the road and that was also imported from Japan. As much as I love the M, and I do! - the 3.0si coupe is 80% the thrill at 60% the price!

It’s a different beast but with clean title I paid low $30s, just needed some minor maintenance. Visceral, great handler on modern tires, great looks, rarer than most at every CC. Shockingly the roadster is $20-30k less than a same mile same year GTS coupe, so highly recommend. Hope @throttlehouse does a video on every 80/90’s kids dream car one day.

Nice. For me the lines of the GTS are just to sexy to pass up. 🥵

The cheapest 987.2 Cayman S manual is going to run you $40-$45k, if you can even find one.

I picked mine up during covid 09S 27.5k 98k miles 6 speed. They do sell around 30k with higher miles. Usually only 2-3 for sale though. It's at 109k miles now
Give me 40k and you can have it lol

I bought a 997.2 Carrera 4S 6-speed with all the good options (PSE, PASM, Chrono, stitching on dash, etc) with healthy 80k miles for $45k pre-pandemic. Just after that I was tempted to also get a 987.2 Boxster for which I saw several examples for around $20k. Now that's nearly doubled.

There are a few that have sold for under 30K on bring a trailer. Not sure where you are getting 40-45K from. Extremely clean low meilegae ones are in that range.

These are $30-35k US at this mileage all day.
He’s smoking crack about the Porsche shifter though. It’s rubbery and imprecise. Even upgrading to a Numeric setup can’t hide the transmission’s mediocrity. A Miata is better.

Great video. About 10 years ago, I came to the same conclusions and picked up a Z4 M-Coupe and absolutely love the car. Very engaging and every time I think about jumping ship to another platform, nothing feels quite right, especially when considering value/performance. The M is just special and aged exceptionally well.
