To get a better round, try trimming starting at the base. If you start at the top, the curve will be fine at the top, but it's very easy to lose the shape as you move down. I like mine to look like a marble sat on a table and not like a marble with a stalk underneath. If you go from the top down, you will find you can't really correct the curve at the base, and this is usually where, over the years, the perfect spherical shape is lost. My method is to get the base curve right then move on to the top cutting the middle section last, a light brush with the palm of my hand to release cut leaves etc then a final trim here and there of any tiny bits. I use old hessian sacks underneath to collect the trimmings.
