Hey Doc, just a quick tip...when I trim my bushes, I will take an old painters drop cloth, or old beach towels and lay them around the base of the shrubs. For me, it makes cleanup much easier. Love your videos, keep up the good work.

My dad would've really enjoyed you. He is gone now of course since I'm 70. But he had a good sense of humor and he knew what the hell he was doing. It was a nice combination in a person.

I do a cube shape first, then round-off the corners of the cube to make a sphere. By doing that I take care of the bulky and overgrown branches that get in my way in visualizing the final sphere and I establish a base-level size & shape before the final look. I just developed this technique on my own from years of cutting bushes/shrubs, but it works for me because it simplifies things.
Also, like he said in the video, let the cutting blades do the work and don't force the blades into the bush when cutting. You want to slow-down when it comes to the final details and exact shape of whatever bush/shrub you're cutting to get the perfect look.

I like the Booty Cut. I am SO glad this girl does LOW maintenance and has bushes only where the points of brick on the house is - 8. Just got through shortening my flowerbeds and put in perennials. Maintenance is once a year.

I can relate your approach and since I don't do formal gardening and have a laid back make it look tidy but not perfect, I'm loving your approach.

I enjoy trimming them. It's like giving the garden a haircut. Looked outy window half done the little runway but still got a giant low crawling one. I thought leaving it naturalish but off the middle grass that goes up the middle of my well grown secret garden. Left as a legacy I don't want to damage it. I want to make it lovely so I'm learning from scratch and trial and error. I've only got rubbish big scissors but it still worked.

I use two big pieces of cardboard. I have a notch cut in the side of each to fit around the trunk. When I put them down they overlap a bit. Raking up is easy on the smooth surface of the cardboard. I use my leaf blower to blow the clippings out of the shrub before cleaning up.

Doc, you say you have to envision the shape you want and go for it. I’m not a pro but I absolutely agree. I think of it as icing a cake. You have your hard base layer (agressive cut) and then you put the gravy layer of icing on at the end (light cut) for finish appearance. That big ole hedge trimmer is like a spatula😃 great tutorial. I’m gonna try that booty cut though. Never tried it but will today
