    In this video I show how simple it is to make your riding lawn mower stop like it should. Over the years the brakes on my riding lawn mower has gotten weak, In this video I adjusted them like new again.

      How to make the pads last longer. A hose clamp is the right width. Just needs to be cut to length. You can use them as shims to push the pad closer to the Brake Rotor. Just sand the pads smooth where the rotor cut its grove. Place your shims behind the pad. Lot cheaper than $16+ for 2 new pads

      @@Art-jl6pt I'm using it as a spacer behind the shoe. Not as a brake. It should last for ever. When the shoe gets thin. I replace it.

      I'm going to subscribe just on the fact that your videos are short and to the point. Thank you! Like you said, I don't have time to watch somebody talking about irrelevant stuff for 20 minutes before they get to the point. I'm gone by then! I just acquired 7 of these LT1000's, 2000's, and a couple Poulan Pro of the same type. They all run, but each has 1 or 2 minor issues like non working brakes, broken mower engagement cable, flat tires, etc.

    You did a great job demonstrating and explaining the parts of the brake system, but you never actually explained or showed how to adjust the brakes. Other than that great video, I did learn some things from it.

    • @old-red
      @old-red 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Came to the comments to see if that gets explained. It does look like he flipped the brake pad. Possible that you can adjust he brakes on the mower by tightening the middle bolt perhaps?

    • @jpweakley9942
      @jpweakley9942 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He did explain it, just not point it out directly.. If you look at the 5 minute mark, (and even specifically the 5:11 mark) there are 2 nuts (at the very top right of the screen) that are attached to the brake engagement rod, that are just to the right of the large spring.. Loosen the locking nut enough that you can adjust the left nut closer to the spring.. Then when you get the nut adjusted where you want it, tighten the locking nut back up against the adjustment nut, and you're done.. Hope that helps clarify a little more.. Good video.. I didn't know how to do it, or else I would have never seen this video.. Now I get it..

    The common failure on these is the pins corrode in the bore and seize. Yours didn't look bad but generally you want to wire wheel those pins and you should grease them either way.

    So after the brakes wear, do you just turn in the nylon lock nut on the brake assembly? Or do you adjust it for better breaking by loosening the double nut and taking up the slack?

    Thanks man. I purchased and DIY installed new pads for my Craftsman riding mower. However, it still keeps going when I press the brakes. Great video I am fixing a Craftsman LT1000 and am having an issue with the drive belt it keeps popping off so I ordered a new one that is 1/2 inch by 95.5 inch outside diameter and the belt is too small. Can you please tell me the belt size for this lawn mower thank you

    • @rvalens2
      @rvalens2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You probably already found out that you did indeed order the correct drive belt. It is supposed to be 95.5 inches long by 1/2 inch wide. However, it's important to note that you can't just order any belt that fits those parameters. You need to order belts that meet the original manufacturer's specifications. OEM Lawn mower belts are made to slip and the best ones are made from Kevlar. For anyone that might read this, the part number(s) for the drive belt is Part No: - 144959 or 532144959 (either works) - 1/2" by 95.5 inches long. The deck belt that turns the blades part number is Part No: - 144200 or 532144200 (either works) - 1/2" by 88 inches long. My LT1000 has a 42" deck.

    • @1randyful
      @1randyful ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. Plus, if rotor is stuck to the shaft, free it up. Remove it from the splined shaft and lube it. It has to slide to allow for wear of the pads.

  • @inhibited44

    My pads were barely worn, but the braking is poor down a small incline. I might try folding up aluminum wrap and placing between the brake and flat metal piece just for giggles before I purchase pads.

    • @Fentertainment

    Very thorough disassembly and reassembly instructions. That was not the title of the video.
    Completely unneeded removal of the wheels and complete disassembly of the brake assembly to make an adjustment to the brake. There seems to be room to access the brake assembly without removing the wheels. You also did not show what the adjustments you made were or how to tighten/loosen the brake. I will figure that part out by trial and error I guess. 2 out of 4 stars.
