A common problem for all riding lawn mowers is that the disc brake nut becomes loose and the brake doesn't work. It's a simple fix of cleaning out the area with a screwdriver and tightening the nut. Tighten the nut to the point just before you can hear and feel it rubbing on the pads.

This was the same problem on mine. I won't tell you how many years I rode without brakes on my 2003 model Murray. Thank you!

Same exact issue on mine. I thought it was time for new brake pads because I wasn't able to stop. I can't explain to you how much your video just helped me out!!!! Thank you so so much.

Big THANK YOU! Flipped the pads around a few years ago but of course have forgotten how to do it so watched half doz vids, lastly yours -- too simple, it can't be that. It was. Took the the wheel off for access, luckily the shaft key was up, even remembered to put the C clip back. Any more real simple tasks will be most welcome. Yesterday driving back into the lean-to I hit the wall and knocked a hedge trimmer to the floor so it was essential I fixed this asap. Done, thanks to you.

I was rolling backwards down a hill but my wood trailer jackknifed and hit the tire to save the day.

Years ago, I helped a riding mower manufacturer troubleshoot a bearing problem on the blade spindle shafts. People got their shiny new mowers home and wanted to impress the neighbors, but with only a couple hours of run time, the blade spindles would seize and the blades would stop turning.
They sent 10 spindle assemblies to test to see if I could identify faults using vibration analysis. I did my tests and reported problems with 8 out of the 10 assemblies.
"We only built faults into 3 of the assemblies we sent." Yes, but 8 of the 10 have bearing defects and will fail early. Rather than manufacturing problems in assembling the spindle, they had crappy bearings.
I asked them to send 10 of each size of bearing used in the assembly. I received a shoebox with a couple sheets of newspaper and 20 ball bearings rolling around loose - no padding or packaging, just the loose bearings. I called my client. "It's a waste of time to test these bearings. It looks like whoever shipped them swept them up off the floor and threw them in a box. These are crap just because of the way you shipped them." The sheepish response: "That's the way we receive them from China." Well, I think we've found the problem here!
They sent some "better" bearings to test. These were better - at least they were packed in sealed tubes of 10, rather than packed like so much rubbish. We tested these bearings. Six out of ten of one size failed testing. Seven of ten of the other size failed. The odds of getting a spindle assembly with a pair of decent bearings was almost zero.
They solved the problem by paying the price for quality bearings.

I'm going to ask because you mentioned, but did not detail. Also because I do not know. I have a 1998 I think Craftsman LT-1000.Pretty much most on it is standard on mowers and parts even today. I brought it used and attempting to fig out something. My brakes do not work at all. Nor does the park rod. When I have the clutch brake pedal down I see nothing with brakes and pad move.I have greased etc area and nothing. All parts and springs attached. So what is issue maybe? Next, keep in mind mine is a hydrostat trans not gear shift. However does have brakes I guess.

Just wondering how old your mower is. The disk brake that you show in the video does not look old. It looks shiny and new. Great info though. Will try with my old mower. Hoping it helps. It is scary when you are on a small incline and you cannot stop.

Any idea about pressing the clutch/brake and shift lever having a rough time going into gear? Not all the time. But sometimes. Thanks

    • @DaveWirth
      @DaveWirth  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Ya mine does that a little. There's tons of linkages and bars that connect to each other. As far as the brake/clutch, i think it moves one of the pulleys forward to loosen the drive belt. Not sure about the shift lever or how the transmission works. Maybe something isn't aligned right? Maybe needs WD-40?

@@DaveWirth I'm going to see if I can see under there. Look for anything obvious. The belt is really old. But then again so is the tractor. 91 JD 240. I'm hoping its just a bad connection.

Whn my mower shut off brakes are work fine when i push back & forth,
While I riding brake won’t work at all please help!!!

That's the issue I had with a Yard Machine rider. I tried tightening the caliper nut just before creating brake drag when rolling the rider by hand with engine off. I discovered the replacement Lowe's Sunbelt drive belt I had installed didn't work in my application and over-powered the brake. I replaced the belt with an OEM MTD drive belt, and the mower drives and brakes as expected.
