Awesome content as usual. As someone that sits in front of a computer all day, it is refreshing see someone working with their hands with such attention to detail.
I have said it before, I will day it again and I will continue saying it this Channel is absolute class and is both very informative and pleasure to watch.
I tried to buy a 260a ac/dc tig with pedal etc from Rtech using their interest free credit offer. Despite having an excellent credit rating they refused me because ‘ I AM A 78 YEAR OLD PENSIONER’. I bought a Polish/Chinese import, virtually the same welder wearing a different coat and a lot cheaper. I wait to see your attempt at welding 30 year old dirty 1.2mm aluminium. It took me weeks of practice to get it right. Good luck. By they way my resto is a Citroen SM
excellent work Gary!...been following as one day I'd love a 928..currently refreshing my Z3 and tackling the sills so I've literally started welding last week. Bought a gasless flux core welder and it's brilliant up to 3mm..for the pits in the steel I've learnt to use Bilt Hamber deox Gel..paint it on and tape it up so no air gets to it..and it eats all the pits away...
Perfect. I'm sitting here in my comfortable home, with a beer, with my feet up, almost feeling like it's me working on a lovely old car that deserves a new lease of life.
I'm one of the 14,000 who bought one of those R-Tech 180s; for the restoration of a 1980 Range Rover. It's night-and-day compared with my previous Clarke unit, I can butt weld 0.9mm sheet quickly and reliably. Very interesting to see the people behind it. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the work on the 928.
Dear God!! I never worried or even thought about the effects of welding, I used to be a coded welder back in the 70s welding mild steel, cast, galvanized steel, aluminum the lot, Mig Tig, and arc, Never Give It A Thought until I watched this. Jesus, it's frightening!! OH! by the way great job Gary
Another enjoyable video Gary. My bedroom poster car as a teenager was a 928 S1 in White. I used to stare at that picture and imagine one day owning one. Sadly not happened yet, although I came close with a 986 Boxster a couple of years ago :)
Greetings from Auckland NZ. Recently joined. Watched one episode and that was it, I’m hooked. Gary, keep up the great work in restoring these amazing cars. Love the 928 and can’t wait for more content as NZ TV is rubbish down here 😂
Well thanks Ken there’s about 70 episodes to get through and some great ones coming up so enjoy and thanks for watching and your support!! Spread the word!! Regards.
As the other comments say Gary really professional videos l have watched all of them and all are very slick and well edited …keep up the good work mate….cheers from a name you may remember from your P.P. days ….Bob .
Awesome video Gary. That welding helmet is next level ! I never really needed to weld as Lotus is mostly fibreglass but I admire those who can weld well. Watching from Sydney 🇦🇺 but an expat 🇬🇧 who loves classic cars. Cheers
Your channel is the greatest. No bull just “this is what I’m going to do and why.” It’s very inspirational and educational. At some point, could you talk about how you dove into body and paint work/honed those skills? Suppose you just have to do it, but it’s a scary task for many. Thanks
Looking forward to seeing the window trim go back on. The trim corners have never lined up properly on my 928 so I'll be using your episode as a guide. Enjoying the relaxed feel and quality work of these videos
That was really interesting to see about the health and safety issues! My Godfather used to do lots of fibreglass work and he died of cancer caused by that work!! He was the first I saw die of it and it was quick! I will say no more! Good for you taking all the safety precautions!
You need a little sand blaster. Only way to remove the corrosion completely instead of just skimming the surface . Wirth their weight in gold. Ive had 3 928s and love em.
Brought back memories of doing a body panel shaping course, which also included TIG welding, with Contour Autocraft. The welding I picked up OK surprisingly, but the panel shaping , I think takes much practice to be really good.
Welding old ali is much more difficult as Im sure you just found out ! Need to go over the weld then clean it of the soot then repeat and eventually it will take. I have all R tech gear now having moved from the so called premium brands. Why ? The back up when things inevitably go wrong and is why they are so successful.
Nice job Gary. I like the mirror fix. Looking at this car and how it's put together, I sometimes think that car construction quality has taken a few steps back since this was built.
Very interesting episode Gary - we will be in the market for one of these very soon as we have our work cut out (litterally !) with our S2 Daimler. The one you have gone for looks like a great piece of kit and just what we need - super helmet too ...! looking forward to seeing progress on you welding and painting in the next episode.... cheers stew
As a former welder and stilk a welding inspector (NDT) i can tell you always clean the metal thorougly, also the oxide layer from the Luminium must be removed. When weldi g, always look at your meltbath. Watch out for tensions. Put the workpiece clamp (minus) as close as possible to the place you want to weld. Also clean the place where that clamp is mounted. No more then 12 liter gas per minute because of wirls that can take oxygene into the meltbath. Try to learn to move the alu welding rod or a knit rod forward between you thump, pointfinger and middle finger. Like you hold a pen. Like moving the pen(cil) forwards. This way, you do not have to move your hand forward and it can stay on the place where it or your elbow is resting during welding. It is for the stability and so. Keep the front glaas of the welding helmet clean. Clean it often. Keep the TiG tungsten rod in the torch pointy. Regards from Belgium.
@@classic.obsession Hello Gary, indeed: the when using TiG goes on the minus and the "workpiece clamp" on the plus side. That is why it is called workpiece clamp/cable. About grinding the Tungsten rod: that should be done in length direction. Axial direction. A nice (not per se) good weld is looks like as if there are small coins laying in a row on each other. Like playcards in a half stacked row on a table. When you do not clean aluminium, the heat you need to penetrate the oxide layer is high. And then when that is gone, your heat is to high because alu already melts at 660,3°C. So, you get a big hole in the metal you want to weld. That is when you have to clean off (grind) the oxyde layer. When you weld and you are in the weld helmet, you are relaxed and in your own world.
Come on Gary you should’ve shown your handy work to the guys there mate, especially after getting your shiny new toy. I thought I was watching one of those TikTok shorts that leave everyone hanging without showing the good bit, the final result.
Hi Gary I have always liked their welders! I use Jasic myself, You will lose quite a bit of your shielding gas trying to weld outside. And you only need air fed gear if you are doing heaps of welding in a confined space. Your a good actor we need to see hard evidence of that weld. Only Kidding!! ❤ Your channel keep it coming.
More fascinating stuff, Gary. Enjoyed the welding talk and it's nice to see someone discussing h & s without spouting a load of stupid jokes. I'm surprised no-one mentioned arc eye which is something you definitely won't want twice! Ask me how I know.
Impressed that you know where -- and how -- to dismantle the smallest thing on this 928. Feels like I'd waste days ONLY figuring out were to go to dismantle the nuts and bolts here...this doesn't seem intuitive like on some older cars (e.g.: stuff from the 1960's ) I've worked on...
I love this S4, but dear me, the English weather and salt has royally ruined it. Every turn sees more work. Good luck to you. The TIG/MIG stuff was incredibly useful.... I'm keen to learn welding in my retirement.
Nice welding kit they sell, I’ve had one of there dc tips for years no problems, maybe get a flow meter for the gas add it on to your gauges much better control of the liters you are using 👍👍, not going to be easy welding dirty corroded aluminum it’s got be spotless otherwise just a disaster, good luck.
Feel a bit cheated here Gary you never showed us the finished welds on the lower front wing, I know that welding aluminum when’s it in that condition cracked , it’s the contamination that makes it very difficult, hope you show us in the next edition 👍👍👍I have one of Rtec’s Dc tigs very good quality machines
You have to really to do a descent job so there’s no build up of paint around edges etc. also there’s a lot of mud in places you couldn’t imagine. But yes it will be tricky to refit, I’m under no illusions. I try not to dissemble anything I don’t need to as they never go back or feel the same, but sometimes you have to. Regards.

Love the SM Bill. Very futuristic even now never mind back in the 60’s! Regards.
It’s not R tech that turned the credit down but their credit company.
I have spoken to Rtech and they agreed with the credit provider and refused to intervene. I went elsewhere and paid by bacs.
I enjoyed the welding chat and had no idea that the fumes are as bad for the health.
Welding plus brake cleaner = mustard gas
