I just wonder... Is it illegal to seek employment while you are just a visitor? Say if you are just there to get job interviews or look for information. i thought it was not illegal unless you engage employment. If he knows he's going to be cooking? Does he take them during an overseas vacation where you'll be staying with family members and he may prepare a meal or two?
I used to be a chef, and I took my knives everywhere too. But I'd never try to bring them on a plane, even though she tried to check them in properly lol
Illegal Workers perhaps arise in UK because Employers cannot find British Workers to do the work. I'd prefer the focus was on blocking violent people, drug smuglers and what I'd call 'real criminals' from entering UK, rather than harassing ordinary, decent people, just working.
Every time I cook, it doesn’t matter where I cook. I use my chefs knives. I travel my knives travel. They are part of my life. I spent thousands of dollars on them. Why would I not want to take them with me to use. Just my opinion.
Fake colleges and mattress cash for bank accounts. Canada had a bit of a crisis with that; folks will enroll in a "college", which is really just an office in a strip mall somewhere, and borrow the required amount of funds from a loan shark to prove funds to the respective government body. Then, they make it in the country, and have to pay back the money PLUS exorbitant tuition fees for the fake college PLUS interest from the loan shark.
@rosariodagosto6484 & @emmymegify: have the cajones to call out scammers from other countries as well as including yours. Also have the guts to ask Britain about the slavery colonial looting , war crimes , creating chaos etc. to other countries even now.

If you're on vacation, you don't need your knives. If you're carrying multiple copies of your cv and covering letters, that outweighs your carrying your knives!
A law student without common sense but just want to enter UK without any cash and financial support surely would be rejected. A visitor should provide a return ticket and proof of paid accommodations to convince the immigration officers that the visitor is for sight seeing purpose and would return home after the short stay. If the visitor is sent home right the way, then the air ticket going to UK is totally wasted without anything achieved, but leaving a rejection record in the UK.

People don’t bring 20+ physical copies of their CV on a trip if they don’t intend to work or seek for it. That woman can (fake) cry and deny all she wants, she was planning to work there. Period. Same goes for the girl in the second story: she had background-check documents and her insurance card but no cash, no credit card and above all no return ticket….if she wasn’t planning to stay and work illegally, then I’m Julia Roberts ((which I most certainly am not)) - and my gut tells me she also probably ran away from home.
Yes, he did. She said it, too. Looks like between 18-30 you can get a First Work and Holiday Visa but you only get to do that once. A permanent employee visa is under 45, and since I think she’s 41, I don’t know why she couldn’t get one of those.
The knives, I understand. All chefs prefer their own hardware. But geez, carrying resumes is a dead giveaway. Of course they’re looking for work! What I’ve never been able to understand is why they don’t keep it on their computer, and print them out later. It’s not rocket science! Everyone keeps their resume on their computers.
These officers seem cruel sometimes but they know their job and know how deceitful people can be. As uncomfortable as I feel for the traveller in the end I usually side with the officers. Asking a chef why they'd have their knives is like asking why a musician has their instrument
I can see your logic but knives are a bit different to instruments, also the 20+ copies of the CV paints a different picture from a immigration pov
I've known musicians for over 50 years. Lots of them. They don't travel with all their instruments.
