      If you know about driving a real sports car, the gear change kicks in hard on changes, in sports mode it's quick and it gives you that old fashioned kick into gears that modern sports cars don't have.
      But having said all this, the whole setup and hardware is exactly the same as the ones put into the Ferrari 355 and 360. Single clutch race change feel of a classic Italian sport car.

      If you think this is fun, I stumbled upon a 2002 Maserati Spyder convertible with 6 speed manual. I can't even imagine driving this V8 4.2L Ferrari designed engine car with a speed manual AND with the top down! Holly Molly!

    I own a 4200 from 2002 now for 2 years. Use it as my daily driver. Drove about 40k miles in it. got 80k in total now.
    Of course you get issues with this cars. Big things for me: heater matrix leak ($2k), f1 pump ($800), aircon pump ($1k), oil sensor ($500), door handle failure ($300), aircon piping leaks ($1k), broken beam leveller ($200), worn brake shoes ($500), front and rear discs + pads ($1k), front and rear tires ($500). I let my specialist service the car every 6 months. about $700 each time. Things still left on the TODO list. replace engine mounts, head covers are leaking a little bit, sticky buttons everywere.
    These cars are extremely fun to drive. The cost of driving is a bit similar to my Ferrari 430. About $5k US dollars a year. Which is in my opinion not too bad.

      Agreed 100%. These cars take some upkeep to keep them running but they are LOADS of fun....

      You are exactly right - with proper routine maintenance these cars are spectacular. To save the clutch, always drive in sport mode and shift at 4K rpms or above....flick the paddle and floor it. Love my Gransport.

    I own one of these 2004 Maserati 4200 coupe, and the owners manual tells you in two places that the car will shift better and the car will be happier if you put the gas pedal on the floor!!! The shifting is quicker when in Sport mode and the transmission is designed for racing not street use. The car also has an auto function on the trans but the clutches will last longer when used manually and always kept in sport mode. I say this because when the clutch needs replacement, it will cost a bundle... around $4000-5000. Might seem like a lot compared to a toyota... but this car cost over $110,000 when new, It was built by hand by Ferrari. They were not expecting poor folks to buy one...LOL. What a fun car to drive and own. The V8 is the same engine used in the Ferrari F430, Ferrari California and Ferrari F458 Speciale. The way to have insurance on one of these without paying a ton of dough is to own a "regular" car with regular insurance then purchase classic car insurance for your maserati through Hagerty (classic car insurance.)

      Hi Karr,
      Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge of these awesome cars! I truly enjoyed it while I had it here. Although I have to say, I only drove in sport mode once. It was scary fast and I decided "regular" mode was more than sufficient for me :-)
      Please subscribe to my channel and share. I have more great videos coming up: 2002 Jaguar XKR 100, 2002 VW Eurovan Weekender with the Westphalia package, a 2007 Aston Martin DB9 and a 2009 Jaguar Super 8 Portfolio!

      Happy same year model owner here, and I can confirm 100%. Always on Sport mode and you'll be fine. It don't like maneuvers and slow traffic, but when you step on it it's pretty fast. Although highways and open roads seem to be the natural habitat of the 4200, when you get used to its weight, you can go pretty fast on corners as well. If you get to know a couple of it's quirks, I think it's a great weekend car for the price it is sold now in the used cars market.

      it's a gearbox that Maserati would teach you how to use when you purchased the car, it take most drivers a week to get used to it and then you will understand how much fun it is ,

    • @Tom--Ace
      @Tom--Ace 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a Gransport, not the best gearbox ever but CERTAINLY not the worst, it's better than almost any auto, it sounds spectacular and it's QUICK when in sport and accelerating, but it needs a DBW module from Formula Dynamics and of course it's not as good as a manual
      Edvin sounds like he's talking about a car he's never driven. This is a fantastic car, you'd know that if you had one
      And you'd see the gearbox differently if you realised that very similar gearboxes were used in the f360, f430, lambo Gallardo, 575 Maranello etc - yet you can obtain this car for as much as a new toyota, instead of the hundred thousand plus that the very similar f430 (yes I've been in one, its faster but otherwise drives and feels very similar) or other noted cars go for.
      The Maserati coupe/Gransport are supercars for ordinary money, and they're fantastic buys! Just be prepared for clutch change costs (rest of the servicing isn't much worse than a selespeed Alfa Romeo)

      @@Tom--Ace I have a 2006 Gransport Spyder that I've put 5,000 miles on in the (just under) 12 months I've had it. I agree with every word.
      I don't think anything I've ever owned has given me as much pleasure. I smile every time I see it.
      And driving it? The most fun you can have with your clothes on!

    Really beautiful cars, and a timeless shape in my opinion. Looking to buy a fun weekend car in a year or so, and stronlgy considering one of these or one of the new Gran Tourismo models.
    In some ways I feel like this one is a more elegant design, and I feel it may also be more fun considering it has the same motor and is about 200kg lighter then thre Grantourismo.

      @ValEuroSport  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ValEuroSport
      I have an Alfa Romeo 147 GTA at the moment as my fun / weekend car, and I'm budgeting to upgrade in 12-18 months.
      The Alfa isn't by any stretch the fastest, best handling or best built car on the road - but it just has so much character. The styling, the steering, the interior, he engine/exhaust note - It feels like im treating myself every time I drive it. So much so that the I tried to replace it twice, but ended up selling the replacement cars and keeping the Alfa, because it appeals to the heart in a way these makes it very difficult to part with.
      Thats the same kinda feeling I'm looking for from the next car, and a Maserati just seems like the logical next step.
      I have the 4200GT, Gransport, Quattroporte and GranTurismo all on my shortlist at the moment, and honestly I think that out of the lot the Quattroporte seems to speak to my heart the most. But id love any of them.
      Only think that concerns me is the running costs , as I expect they would be a pretty huge leap above the alfa! But being a weekend car that will prob do less than 5,000km per year helps with that. I don't mind spending the money to take good care of the care.
