    Thankyou for this sam, i feel like you’ve opened a very comfortable space for people to share and discuss. So here is something I went through right before covid i moved secondary schools (i was in year 10) but never got to settle in because of covid and so for 6 months i had no school no friends and after i was put into care and separated from my siblings it shaped me so weirdly that i went from a loud opinionated person to completely quite and had to mature very fast so i could be some what of a comfort to my younger siblings , i am now in year 12 and still don’t have close friends however no i feel comfortable being alone yet there are still days when i see people hanging out that i kinda wish that was me but I’m still maturing and understanding the world. till this day i feel like i lost a very important piece of myself and my personality.

      I'm sorry to hear that :( I'm sure it will get better though with more time, we're still not past the effects of covid ofc, when the mentality (not just the rules) is back to normal hopefully things will be great for you - if not before :)

    Hey. I am an international DPhil student at Oxford and I also feel invisible. Unlike how you feel transitioning from school to uni, I feel invisible mostly because I feel I don't belong to the Oxford community. I am just a mediocre person coming from the developing world and my English is quite broken tbh. I barely make any friends here unless they are the ones who approached me first. I have a funny story when I am aware of the existence of someone for a few years and at some point, we had to introduce ourselves, and that person thought that I am a fresher. I was like, didn't you aware that I've been around you for a few years?.

    Hi Sam. Im 42 now and went to study In Aberdeen as a 17 year old. I now look back and realise that my campus fraternity was an artificial population which would signify little or nothing in the long-term. I got to know a few good souls and those I do remember, but I question the dynamics of a peer-centred 'fresher' social life which was largely unfulfilling. In my case I had gone to Aberdeen to study at the local college for a year, prior to attending University. Looking back, that year was far more meaningful, since I mixed with local people that were grounded in the city's culture. Many of the connections I made were inter-generational and I got to know some very humble 'lone-travellor' types whose outreach was sincere. I now realise that the relative solitude I was anxious about was quite normal. Forcing oneself into social extravagance is not the answer. If I were to do it again I would explore the local environment, its history and native culture and find something outside of university/campus life. Narrow is the way.

    Hi Sam, this is totally random, but I live in Oxford and found your channel. I totally understand what it’s like to feel invisible in this town! There’s this very ramshackle, scruffy folk music open night (sort of a mashup between an Irish pub and karaoke). Lots of locals go, lots of people from the university(s) go. We try to be as welcoming and inclusive as possible! It’s on tonight. Google ‘Bastard English Session’ (a weird name, I know) and maybe pop down and say hello?

      Ah I would have loved to but term has just ended and I'm at home! Thanks so much for the offer though :)

    • @jamesbellcentraltv
      @jamesbellcentraltv 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries! Hope next term is better. There are a lot of great cultural communities in town but *outside* the university that I'd recommend to any student - many find it easier to fit in, and it allows them to have a sort of parallel Oxford life that can be a great complement to academic life.

    Uni isn’t a social club, you are there to learn your subject, that’s your job, you eat sleep and breath just that. What subject are you studying? Do you find it interesting?

    • @johno3801
      @johno3801 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      'and just breath' fucking hell bro.
      If you go to uni with the mindset that to just focus all your energy on studying you did uni wrong. dont get me wrong, i am an academic minded person and a bookworm, but uni is a place to grow with new experience, to learn how to network with peers, to gain responsibility for yourself. It is your job to study i agree, but your life isnt revolved around your job is it.
      sincerely, a Math student at Durham (because you'll probaby ask what uni / course to justify yourself)

      @davidsweeney111 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johno3801 I hear what you're saying, but that's literally the way I went through uni, didn't care about the social side, I just enjoyed reading, learning, lectures, doing assignments over and over, but I do have autism so maybe that has something to do with my approach... PS Durham is a great place for maths and theoretical physics, nice!

      @@davidsweeney111 firstly, I just want to say sorry for being obnoxious or anything like that in my comment, I regret being a bit too aggressive in that regard.
      Yeah I completely understand you and I agree that experiencing uni should be the way you want too. I guess I have my more balanced mindset now because I was engrossed in studying like yourself because I loved it but I later burnt out hard. Anyways, your comment made me reflect that I should focus on my work a bit more now and thank you for that. All the best bro!
