Confirmed working on Brother H110 hand-held printer with best Chinese heatshrink cartridge. A little tape over one hole and it is printing upright and legible
Thank you - nice catch! The holes also help the printer identify the size of the tape (or tubing) and max size of the font used. So if you blind some holes you lose this functionality, but the size of the font can be adjusted manually in printer settings.
If you are worried about the text rubbing off, you can just get clear-ish tube, and I think the yellow on black would show up just fine. Thicker, obviously. But sometimes you want to keep that label around forever.
The shrink labels used in professional harness shops aren’t much different so far as being able to scratch off the print, in applications where legibility was utmost a section of clear shrink tube would be applied over the label.
I don't use that, I prefer a simple paper label with adhesive tape (so, already protected because the tape), but is always interesting to know new possibilities. When I want to protect something painted, I use clear barnish, lacquer, epoxi or something like that, very cheap, you only need here like a drop, just choose the correct one, for rigid or flexible pieces. Thanks for sharing !
I tried this on a PTouch PT-P710BT and confirmed that it works with the AliExpress cartridges. The printer checks for size as well as the type of cartridge installed and the 5.8mm tubes read as 9mm, 9mm read as 9mm (same hole pattern as shown in the video) and the 11.8mm read as 3.5mm and was missing the hole closest to where the tube exits the cartridge (when I added a hole it read 9mm as well). The app allows you to read what type of cartridge is installed and will tell you what it is supposed to be which means I could possibly try them all and see what it spits out.
Thanks for leaving this comment, I have a PT-P710BT and was trying to find information about how to get heat shrink working without buying a new printer,
What about using a normal barcode printer (thermal transfer) , with a normal heat shrink tube ? If it works it will be very cheap , what do you think ?
Excellent work !!! Have you tore down the heat shrink cartridge? Is it possible to re-fill it by replacing the ink ribbon from another cartridge and just add your heat shrink? Because you can buy plain cartridges quite cheap but I can't find cheap heatshrink ones.
@@voltlog Where I am, a roll of 100m for 8mm yellow tube is about US$25. One cartridge is 1.5m, so that $25 roll could refill the cartridge 66 times for $0.38 per refill (1.5m).
It requires several actions and it’s also problematic when you shrink it as the label inside gets creased. Fine for one or two but 20 starts to take a lot of time
Hi there, Thanks for your video. I tried the combination you mentioned for the heatshrink tube, and it worked very well on my PTE110 PV labeler. Regards.
Anybody know if this will work with the Brother P-touch Extra model PT-310? It's an older model, but I like it because it has an actual keyboard. I looked by the pinch roller, and there don't seem to be any microswitches at all.
Out of interest, does your printer eat batteries when not in use? Pretty sure mine's the same as this and as I don't use mine all that often I've found that if I don't take the batteries out between uses they'll be flat in no time.
@@voltlog I'll have to properly test the standby current draw next time I have use for it. But so far literally every time I come to use it all the batteries will be dead if I forgot to remove them. ...I just checked and mine is the PT-H101 model. I think yours is s slightly newer one so they may have fixed the issue.
I works pretty good. I kinda thought it wouldn't be intelligent like a chip on a inkjet printer cartridge. I suppose you could put clear cellotape over it to protect the print, or maybe even clear heatshrink. lol
Me: Decided not to spend any money on buying a printer. Brought some heat shrink tubes. Wiped them with acetone to remove the factory prints. Brought some markers. Spent 20 years in practicing writing perfect letters. Now I have unlimited access to cheap labeled heat shrink tubes.
Yeah, that works too and I have to say I've done it in the past but if there are newer/nicer ways of doing it there is no reason to be stuck with the old method.
Can somebody help me? I have bought a H107. Now, since I hate batteries, I have drilled a hole and installed a socket for adaptor plug, connected (with a schottky for polarity protection) where the cables from the battery end. Now, if I remove the batteries and plug a 9v adaptor, the H107 does not turn on and the meter senses 15v at the input. With the batteries on, it senses about 8v, 7.5v when it’s on. With a 5v adaptor, it senses 13v and still it does not turn on. Also I have tried other adaptors just in case. I feel so noob, I don’t know what I should do to use my H107 without batteries.

Which cartridge are you using for the H110?
hey man what size were your tubes?
Brilliant! Found a problem, found a solution AND shared it. Nice, helps others with their thought processes.

Yeah you could do that, for me personally it's not necessary, it's good enough as it is for bench use.
That's how I'm doing it with plain labels. Clear heatshrink over the top to stop them pealing off. No problem with visibility.
Confirmed this also works on a PT-D210. I used a tape off of Amazon though rather than the AliExpress one.
Nice. I can confirm that this works on the H105 too.
Verified.
Good job. If you really want to protect the text you can add a 2nd layer of transparent tubing.
Yeah you could do that, for me personally it's not necessary, it's good enough as it is.
Thank you! Saved me from a lot of grief! PTE-110
So its working also with pte-110vp?
Thank you so much - this works perfectly on my super cheap PTE110
Do you know if the 8.8mm Heat Shrink Tube works well too? Thank You!!
Could you test clear heatshrink over the printed heatshrink for scratch resistance... Sounds like a perfect solution
Was also my first thought to make a transparent over it to get it scratch-resistant.
Also possible to mirror print on transparent heatshrink and with a tool turn it inside-out? Yeah I'm pushing this too far :)
Very helpful video, now have it working perfectly with cheap Chinese shrink tube labels on my H105 even though Brother themselves say it won't work!
What is the maximum tube width that will work with this printer?
Have you tried refilling the cartridge with store bought heat shrink tube?
The shrink labels used in professional harness shops aren’t much different so far as being able to scratch off the print, in applications where legibility was utmost a section of clear shrink tube would be applied over the label.
Putting a section of clear shrink tube is actually a nice fix for the issue..
@@voltlog yup it did the job, I learned it working in a military harness shop just out of high school.

Thanks Florin, now I ordered a couple of this printable heatshrinks.

Unfortunately not, I haven't tried that. Cartridges are pretty cheap on aliexpress.

Does this work with pt h105?
How about simple paper label held on by clear/transparent heat shrink tube.
Sure if that is more convenient for you.
It requires several actions and it’s also problematic when you shrink it as the label inside gets creased. Fine for one or two but 20 starts to take a lot of time

I am about to buy the same machine as yours ❤😂
Is there anything like this for Dymo printers, ie. Cheaper tape and/or heatshrink labels?
Aliexpress is your friend :)
I'm not sure but Aliexpress is the place to search. Brother replacement consumables seem to be widely available there.
Does anyone know if it would work on the PT-H110 ?
Late reply but it works.
If this is a thermal printing process, how come the shrink tube does not change color when shrinking it with heat?
It's thermal transfer. There's a ribbon with color that gets transferred to the tube with heat.
Works on a PT-P300BT. Thank you so much!!
Is it good for tze-131s ?
Great tip, works on my E110
It does not work on a P-Touch H105 and a H101GB 😥

Like, the pre-cut blue ones? Sharpy marks survive the heat and shrink?
Yeah, that works too and I have to say I've done it in the past but if there are newer/nicer ways of doing it there is no reason to be stuck with the old method.
20 years of my type perfecting my handwriting would definitely be more costly then a 30€ device that does it fast and consistent every time

👍👍👍
This is awesome, i was looking at a dymo the other day and they were $$$
Here at least, brother label printers are cheaper and the consumables are widely available as replacements on aliexpress.
I bought Dyno printer second hand cheap.
Excellent!!! Thank you!!
Good job, chat.
Good day. Has anyone tried to print a shrink tube on the pt-e110vp?
I have one and it works
Genius, köszönöm!
yessss! cool
very nice!

Could you print one that reads: "Mike Hunt - Monster Troll." ?
:)
I actually have a friend called Michael Hunt... he's 29 ... what the hell were his parents thinking?
Дякую друже, працює на brother h105.
