who isn't?!?!?
People pit Gabriel vs. Collins as if they didn't both create INSANELY timeless music. This song is a masterpiece.
Hi I Recommend a Song Called 'looking into the mirror' by Robert Nix
I could not agree with you more. A stone classic, which I’ve never gotten tired of, and still marvel at 40 years later.
Agreed
I enjoy both quite well
Love This so much!!!!!! ❤
This song is a timeless classic.

The 80's: You had to be there 😏.
Too true!
Yup, lived it, loved it
If you're a black man be aware man
No internet we had to shovel coal
When I was 17, I spent the summer holidays in Italy with my parents. There was a videogame machine and a jukebox in a beach cafe near our apartment. I spent most of my time there with this game and 'Turn it on' over and over and over again. I'm now 61 and the song still brings tears to my eyes. FANTASTIC!
Phil owned the 80's. One of my favorite Genesis tunes.
There's also Neil Peart and Rush
They overplayed Phil in the eighties.👊
You are right Deacon Blue.
@@debbienoel1618 , I agree. I don't think they overplayed Genesis, but i do think they over played Phil's solo works.
@WORLDwarFive WORLDwarFive The song is "YYZ" By Rush
A complete shame that we don't have music like this anymore in the 21st century
A real pity 😪
Oh yes.
A real pity. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hard to believe that this song is now 44 years old in 2024
Released by genesis back in March 1980
And it sounds so fresh and immediate. Terrific song, incredible band.
I saw them live in 1981 on the Abacab tour. One of the best concert!
My favorite!!
This song is only 42 years old and still FRESH.
I saw them on that tour! Blew me away!

Some people like to downplay Phil Collins’s songwritings under Genesis when compared to Peter Gabriel’s, but reality is that both eras are simply pure gold, and that’s what makes Genesis so unique and special in the history of music.
well, really this particular song is mostly due to rutherford and banks
@@geraldbalzano431 yet Collin’s melodic input in this song is undeniable
Well put! I wholeheartedly agree!
The primary lyric/melody writer and generally accepted leader of the band has always been Mike Rutherford. All members get songwriting credits because the singer adds his ideas to the vocals, Banks heavily influences or slightly alters the melody, but the songs always start with Mike. There was a difference between the types of songs for Gabriel and Collins, because Mike was making songs for Gabriel to sing, then he was making songs for Collins to sing. And the trends were changing, also. There was at least one album that was transitional, where Collins was singing songs that were kind of the Gabriel style. The transition completed, and out the other side came the Collins-style Genesis. But it was always Mike coming up with the songs.
Yes. But this song is mostly by Rutherford.
Still listening!!!! 2024 ❤❤❤ !!!
I was lucky enough to see Genesis in 1987. The best concert I ever saw
You are very lucky, then. I saw the invisible touch tour.....meh...

Phil Collins is a very versatile musician who can sing and play drums at the same time, while being in two different areas of the room at the same time
That's his twin, Bill Collins on vocals.
Their sister Jill Collins steps in for backing vocals occasionally
He is actually a Quantum Collins.......................
Mike Holloway from Flintlock could do it too. Maybe Phil taught him how :)
Don Henley of The Eagles?
A pop music hit with 13/4 time signature. I don't think we'll ever have that again!

It was a better age, the Golden Age. Now popular music as we know it is already endangered and facing Extinction in the wake of AI. As a musician of 38 years and true music lover, I shudder and hate to think about it.

Classic Phil
Back in the days when great songs were written...about stuff like watching TV.

Tony Banks is a wizard on the keyboards. Love the changing time signatures, too.
I'm so glad someone else recognize that about the time signatures. And yes Tony Banks is a keyboard wizard. I mean take a look at the array of keyboards he has around him. And don't forget in case you missed it at the beginning of the video in this particular song He's also playing bass pedals with his feet. Just amazing. But then again in their Prime they were all great musicians.
Genesis went Pop after PG left but, they always sound good.
A totally brilliant band full stop ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
When I just hear the instrumental I think I'm listening to Yes for a few seconds.
It's not changing time signatures, it's dropped beats.
Can i have a show of hands if you're still listening to this in 2019

Still sounds as great as the 1st time I heard it!
👍
Phil is one of the most relaxed drummers I have seen. He makes it look so bloody easy!
because what he plays is
@Osama Bin Liftin’ what he's playing here, as with the other songs of this era, are easy. collins dropped the complexity of the gabriel era and when hackett left. now, epping forest? that was not easy
Anyone who thinks that EVERY drum pattern that Phil Collins played is "easy" doesn't know drums as well as they'd have others believe.
Everyone here is correct, he is a great player, but obviously focused more on singing (in Genesis) once that became is main job. If you watch him play in concert videos he doesn't look relaxed.
Nobadges, it pisses me off to. I can sit for hours just watching him play the drums.
Happy 73rd Phil Collins!!
I hope he’s doing ok. I know he’s had some health challenges and can no longer play the drums 😢
@@kaymuldoon3575 sadly he's in very bad shape. Sorry. I hate to say it but you are correct - Phil is in bad health.
I don't think people actually realize how incredible musician and composer was Phil Collins. Did a great job with Genesis, great job as solo artist and even great job writing for Disney. The guy was destinated to be a showman. No doubt he has to be in the top 10 of most prolific musicians ever, and top 5 if you ask me. What a beast!
He is in my top 3 , along with David Gilmour
He joined a group that appreciated his awesome drumming talent, let him develop as a singer at his own pace and then supported him as his solo career took off
@metjovi I mean, I don't even know an instrument that he hasn't or doesn't play.

Phil and Peter both have a plethora of talent. I am privileged to have grown up with both! 57 years old, started listening to Genesis in 1978

Back "in the day , took a friend who was not familiar w/their music, to concert at Nassau Coliseum. First song out of the blocks was this one. After the song finished, he looked at me in amazement and said "another group would have done that for an encore". Having seen them live several times, I told him that he hadn't seen anything yet. I was lucky enough to have seen them w/Bruford & Chester both. Best live band I've ever seen.
Loved when this was on heavy rotation on mtv.....when everyone listened to all genres of music
During the 1980's, this incarnation of Genesis was a legitimate supergroup. Some of the finest songwriting and polished instrumental performances to be had between 1980 - 1987.
Genesis was my favorite band during the 80s, greatest sound and excellent, dramatic and meaningful music. I wanted to try getting this video with better CD sound quality and merged both here in this link..HERE it is >> th-cam.com/video/FNtmvPJYQ2w/w-d-xo.html (but not sure if everyone can view it)

7 th grade memories wow what a different world better world then.
In contrast with what the song is really about, the opening chords are just so damn TRIUMPHANT.
That time signature is something else.
no shit. SO TRUE It's one of the hardest songs to try and keep time with. And im an experienced trained singer.
One of the greatest bands ever.
And still a kicking song!
Man, Genesis was the best with Phil at the helm!..Those were the days when music was top notch!
No matter how high you rate this group, they'll still be underrated! Tony Banks' keyboard work was spectacular! He wasn't flashy just driving and full bodied!!
Yep
He could be very flashy though, see In the Cage, Cinema Show, In That Quiet Earth
Great description!
I also get so lonely when she's not there.
LISTENING to real music and loving it .
Follow You Follow Me was the entry point to the US but this was the real hook for me.
I'll listen to them till my last days.
This song took pop/rock music from the 70’s by the hand, turned around and waved goodbye, and led it into the 80’s. This song brings you right back to 1980 the second it starts. Only great songs stand the test of time like that. Great song for the ages!
sciocco000315 do you think they knew this was a hit when the recorded it?
Try King Crimson- discipline, it was a movement
@@todaystomsawyer
Discipline and Remain in Light are two of my favorite records.
@@tacogladiator7503 I believe that no one writes a song knowing it's a hit. Artists write for themselves and the general public decides. Phil, Mike & Tony knew they needed to break away from the 70s. Turn It On and No Reply At All were genius tracks to usher in the 80s, even though Follow You, Follow Me was ahead of it's time.
Listen to brand x stuff
A show of hands if your listening to this all time classic in 2023❤
As much as I love the beginnings of Genesis I have to give it to Phil, he is a superstar
Its amazing how Phil Collins can clone himself to play drums while singing at the mic at the same time!
He also switched shirts between the opening of the song and in the middle of the song. He's one hell of a quick dresser.
I don’t hear this song much anymore, but it brings me to tears now....as a stark reminder of the places that I remember while this song was playing in my youth.

Still one of the most innovative uses of timing on a pop song. Everyone talks about Phil but Tony Banks for me had the absolute best synth sounds of the 70s and 80s, he just killed it. So many of those Genesis tunes are built around Tony's synth sounds, he is a true musical genius of the new tech as it was then.
How's this not even at a million views? God help us all
Hey kids, these gentlemen are called musicians. Superb ones, at that.
Thomas R. Skidmore how come they're playing their own instruments? Where are the dancers? How come there's not that squeaky vocals that sounds like Alvin and the Chipmunks playing over and over throughout the song???? What's going on???????
It's a beautiful thing for all of us that these guys were born and became a band when they did. A band like this would never get a recording contract today. It's frightening to think how much great music is still being made today but by people who don't have a certain look.
Kids, it was about the music. It should still be about the music. Because if you can jam, the world shouldn't care what you look like. The world is relying on you to return us to those values, kids. Here's a start...If you need auto-tune to sing well, you don't sing well.
