I drove 5 of us to NEC Birmingham, a long drive in my Ford Escort Mark 3. It was my first live rock concert and when they sang Invisible Touch I suddenly felt an amazing happy, invigorating feeling throughout my whole body, an incredible feeling that I hadn’t had before . All the audience were lost in the moment. The concert was great but this was the best. We queued for 2 hours to drive out of the one exit available for thousands of cars - we didn’t care and stayed on a high all the way home = I think it’s improved a bit since then. Saw Phil Collins solo at Hammersmith a few years later, what a talent

Phil Collins is a true musical chameleon. He seamlessly transitioned from being the powerhouse drummer of Genesis to becoming the band's lead vocalist and frontman. His unique blend of charisma, humor, and musical talent has made him one of the most beloved and versatile artists in the industry.
In the "Invisible Touch" video, we see Collins in his element, showcasing his versatility as a performer. He effortlessly switches between playing the drums, singing, and dancing, all while maintaining his signature charm and energy. His ability to connect with the audience is evident in his playful interactions with the camera and his animated facial expressions.
But Collins' success would not have been possible without the incredible talent of his bandmates. Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, and Phil Collins formed a musical powerhouse that created some of the most iconic songs in rock history. Their chemistry and musical synergy are evident in every note of "Invisible Touch" and in every frame of the video.
Collins' journey from drummer to frontman is a testament to his talent, versatility, and unwavering passion for music. He has left an indelible mark on the music industry and continues to inspire generations of musicians with his unique style and infectious energy.

This brings back memories. Back in 1987 I was in a high school music class. The teacher had a drum kit in the room for us to try out. I had a turn, and happened to have the Invisible Touch album with me. I wanted to attempt drumming along to a song by Genesis. The teacher said
    "Yes."
Some of my classmates asked the teacher why?
"Phil Collins is one of the best drummers in the world,"
    he explained.
Why do I mention this now? Not to be arrogant. I was the only one in my class who liked Genesis. The girls were obsessed with Bon Jovi. The boys- AC/DC. I still like Genesis now, especially the Invisible Touch album.

  • @Kritikateur

"....When the "aficionados" compare the old Genesis with the new Genesis, saying that the old were better, I completely don't agree with it. This is an example of a very well crafted song that has everything in it, all the elements combined together: Song writing, playing and singing, and a great production behind it. If the history of Genesis were trapped in the old formula, it would have been a Monolith sitting there representing more of a memory than an evolution.
Art can't be trapped, as much as Nature or God, because Arts have to continually evolve into something different because it's an ongoing search for perfection. This is the way I see it. So Bravo to this eternal Band. I personally loved all their changes through their times!"
    So long....

There was a time in the early 00's where Phil was EVERYWHERE and it got annoying. And his solo acts were considered (what you would today call) "Boomer Music", as all parents were crazy about him.
He also supposedly bragged about his awards a lot in interviews.
Stupid reasons to hate him, but I guess oversaturation can annoy a lot of people.

Well I've been waiting, waiting here so long
But thinking nothing, nothing could go wrong, ooh now I know
She has a built in ability
    To take everything she sees
And now it seems I'm falling, falling for her.
She seems to have an invisible touch yeah
She reaches in, and grabs right hold of your heart
She seems to have an invisible touch yeah
It takes control and slowly tears you apart.
Well I don't really know her, I only know her name
But she crawls under your skin, you're never quite the same, and now I know
She's got something you just can't trust
    It's something mysterious
And now it seems I'm falling, falling for her.
She seems to have an invisible touch yeah
She reaches in, and grabs right hold of your heart
She seems to have an invisible touch yeah
It takes control and slowly tears you apart.
She don't like losing, to her it's still a game
And though she will mess up your life,
You'll want her just the same, and now I know
She has a built in ability
    To take everything she sees
And now it seems I've fallen, fallen for her.
She seems to have an invisible touch yeah
She reaches in, and grabs right hold of your heart
She seems to have an invisible touch yeah
It takes control and slowly tears you apart. She seems to have an invisible touch...

Invisible Touch is the group’s undisputed masterpiece. It’s an epic meditation on intangibility, at the same time it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. It has a resonance that keeps coming back at the listener, and the music is so beautiful that it’s almost impossible to shake off because every song makes some connection about the unknown or the spaces between people.

Almost 34 years later, this video reminds me that serious work can be immense fun and the a cappella at the end cracks me right up. Mind you, I'm grinning all the way through anyway. Still find this song addictive.
