Hi Jacob! Im actually a video editor and have worked for various NBA related channels, all monetized. There are ways to make this type of content and make money. The thing is that you cant just show highlights. What you do is just keep the clips under 6 secs, add voice overs, texts, etc. The idea is to make something diffrent than the original source, like an analysis or tell a story with those highlights clips. And, when you post a video, post it privately first, and if you get a copyright claim on a segment, what you do is you take down that video, and trim the part that is copyrighted. Hope it helps!
would you please answer , if we have one highlight of 10 minutes then how we should use it for our youtube video, means we can only use 6 sec of that 10 mins video ?
@@akshaynakil3094 highlights of any length will get copyright claimed unless you add commentary or edits. Even then, I’ve written a whole voiceover and still got claimed.
Although our channel is not monetized yet there are ways around this. The sports channels are some of the hardest to make videos for but if you are dedicated there is a demand for the videos.
There will always be demand, the question is whether you want to deal with all the workarounds. I decided it wasn’t worth it for me, but lots of people have succeeded.
I find it strange as there are channels that use full NBA highlights on a FREE license (fair use) and are still monetized. Therefore it could be a good case for an appeal if the claims came from them not from NBA (as you mentioned).
Man you story is very close to my channel. I upload fan reactions from english premier league games and initially put a less than 5 second clip of the goals to illustrate the reactions. I got monetized and then demonetized twice even though I didn’t get copyrights claims on those videos. Mostly because of the heavy swearing in the videos. Now I also got paranoid about any legal action and decided to trim all the highlights from the videos. I lost 2.5 of my 4 million views because you can’t edit a video that has more than 100k views and had to make those videos private. Now I’m moving forward with posting the videos with no possibility of getting a copyright but also no monetisation. I set as a goal to get 100k subscribers just because I enjoy doing it even though it’s time consuming.
man I see a lot of channels monetized with football highlights without even talking... some add commentary but some just use meme sound over some funny player moves etc.. how they are monetized?
Yeah, it's so hard to make money from sports on TH-cam because of all the copyright issues that happen even when you follow the rules. You are not breaking copyright laws by using clips from games if there are reactions or commentary with it, but lots of times the clips get claimed anyway.
Man, my hopes of having a monetized TH-cam channel got dashed after hearing this, I recently started a youtube channel on NBA highlights like MJ's highlights and all that, I obviously have no subscribers right now but I thought I could make it due to false belief that NBA perhaps doesn't strike a channel with copyright claim, I wonder how channels like, House of Highlights, GD Factory Clips and others pull it off, may be they have understanding with both NBA and TH-cam and others have no monetization at all, thanks for sharing your experience on making videos on NBA highlights, thanks

Two questions though: if I haven't get any copyright notifications during the upload (I've even got one like "this footage is copyrighted but the owner allows to use it"), could I still be demonetized in the future (if I'm ever eligible for YPP)? And the second one: can I use someone else's photo in a thumbnail (I edit them though, always add some touches to it, combine it with other photos etc).
1. If you have tons of copyright claims, you are at risk of getting demonetized. A claim every once in a while is fine. 2. It’s kind of a gray area there. As long as you are transforming the original photo by editing it, you should be fine, but be careful because you could get sued by a photographer.

The footage I obtained from China was of Chinese Basketball Association games. Those games took place in China and the broadcasts originated from China, so my understanding was they fell under Chinese copyright law.
The same rule would not apply to NBA footage, even if it had Chinese commentary, because the event happened in the USA and the broadcast originated from the USA. Plus the NBA owns the rights.
@@JacobCEdmunds I figured this much. There is no way of getting this done. Funny how some TH-camrs get a free pass with "Breakdown" videos. It's too much work only to get claims and strikes months ahead.
Did you edit the videos at all?
Visually, no. But I did try adding a voiceover.
hey bro, i have a question, so i am in kind of the same situation, one video made me 90$ before it got claimed will i get that 90 ?
Yes, you will get that $90 as long as your channel is still part of the TH-cam Partner Program
@@JacobCEdmunds thank you very much
Thank you bro. Godbless you.
Appreciate the support
Does rebound get paid and why?
Rebound? Is that a channel?
@@JacobCEdmunds yes, nba
Yeah, they probably do. Their channel is different because they added graphics and stuff to transform the original content.
@@JacobCEdmunds do you think I could do this with WWE content? I heard they’re very strict but my plan is to edit the videos and transform the content into my own reviews like Rebound. What’s your thinking?
You can try it! Are there any other channels doing that for WWE?
interesting, I wonder how these asian channels that show sports highlights get away with it, they usually advertise a product at the end of the video as well
Cant you still made money with partnerships?
What do you mean?
My account is averaging 10 subscribers a week, is this normal?
That’s impressive in the beginning. The longer you post, the faster you will gain subscribers
Can you monetize boxing short edits ? I edit them a lot and try and tell a story with clips I don’t talk over them tho just wondering
I don’t have any experience with boxing clips, but it’s worth a shot as long as you are editing them
@@JacobCEdmunds thanks bro I appreciate
Hey what if I put a bunch of visual edits and sounds included into the videos?
Ultimately, you can do a lot of things to avoid the automatic copyright detection, but they can still go claim your video manually
@@JacobCEdmundswait so if I’m in Australia, and make nba edits, add fx, sound dadada, will I still get payed if I am monetised?
If your channel is monetized, you will get paid until the video gets copyright claimed
So can you get copyrighted even if you don’t monetize your videos?
Yes
Hi siiiir i have a question if there’s any chance that i could get monetized on youtube shorts by nba highlights? Tnx for your response ❤
The same copyright rules apply to shorts. It’s possible, but unlikely unless you add music and lots of visual effects
What if you edit the video like you just want to cover about the basketball play that was going on?
In my experience, I have still received a copyright claim, but then I had to dispute/appeal to get the claim removed
Hey bro. Great video. Do you by any chance know any football websites I can get to download videos so that I create my own highlights?
I don’t unfortunately, other than Twitter
How about highlights on shorts?
It’s the same thing. You can still get a copyright claim on shorts
@@JacobCEdmunds i saw gd high light using nba highlight and still monetize
The NBA probably gets all the revenue though. If the league copyright claims the videos, then ads keep running and they get the money
Which website did you get your highlights from
Usually the NBA website
hey man love your content just sub. I just started to get into the sports video editing world on TH-cam and i see that if you do like less then 5 sec clips helps also videos that are not the NBA and nfl channel helps.
Welcome to the community!
Yes, I have seen that to be true as well.
¡Gracias!
Thanks for the support!
