Vlog 23 Why Writing Matters

  • Surely PhDs are 'about' content? Tara takes on this assumption and discusses why the intensity, quality, direction and purpose of writing matters to research higher degree theses. Tara offers five trigger statements to provide propulsion, energy and motivation on those days where we doubt our ability to write a PhD. Confidence matters in a doctoral programme. This vlog builds that confidence.

I would like to thank you for showing me female scholars could also be colourful, to have a vivid, "very alive" narrative style and outlook. You are a charming lady!

Thank you so much for sharing your ideas. I did not get my PhD from Flinders, but I found your vlogs very encouraging and it has become part of my writing ritual to listen to your comments before I write. Many, many thanks. Louise M-M

Just want to say, although I'm not at Flinders, I found your vlogs earlier this year and have basically been binge-watching them a ton lately, as after long and careful deliberation and lots of consultation with other PhD candidates and others I trust, I've decided to undertake a PhD candidacy myself. I'll be starting in September, working on biofuels and life cycle assessment research and model creation at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in conjunction with the German Biomass Research Centre in Leipzig. I'm incredibly excited, albeit also nervous, with some healthy fear and respect for the process mixed in. I know it'll be great but I'm also mentally preparing myself for the inevitable blood, sweat and tears that often go along with doing a PhD. Your vlogs are an inspiration, chock full of great and practical advice along with pep talks. I always look forward to more. Thanks for doing what you do, your colleagues and students are sooo lucky to have you!

Hi Indrinita - I am so thrilled for you. You will be AMAZING. Promise. And preparation - thinking through assumptions - is everything in the doctoral space. Do that - you are winning. So proud of you - keep in touch and let us know how you go! Txxx

"You have to believe in yourself!", I take that message very seriously, and I appreciate Tara underscoring the point. Thanks!

Excellent virtual teaching. Trying to get through a social science based PhD and this video permitted me the knowledge to understand that believing in myself will assist me greatly in my journey toward success. Thank you Dr. Tara🌷

Once again Tara, thank you so much-like the idea of judging only your last draft objectively-my first ones often exhaust me and put me off reading them over again! Perhaps a step back, a walk , and then reading and finding the bits that pass my bullshit monitor will help. Then sifting for the best of the rest to work on sounds like a plan! Cathy J.

So well said, Cathy. Never judge that first draft!!! It is always a shocker. Judge the last one :) Txxx

You are so kind, Giles. But mate, I've never really thought of myself as 'creative.' I am a scholar, but I do believe that it is important to summon imagination and innovation to the work we do. I want for all our wonderful students an environment of experiment and opportunity. A challenging mix - but we can do it :) You are THE BEST Txxx

Hi Tara, I find your videos very supportive and inspiring! I have submitted a PhD proposal and have been given direction during an interview to add more detail before it is submitted to panel. Please could you do a blog on writing a research proposal and also the PhD research interview.
