You missed the -3 for range 3 hexes on the 1st turn artillery shot - you should have had no effect after the left shift and -3 DRM from 5 rolled to 2 final. Also, the leaders don't give +DRMs, they add to the firing unit strength (before any column shifts). The -1 and -2 leader modifiers help with "morale checks" but the fire modifiers add to firing unit strength, thus sometimes giving columns right on the fire table, but never giving plus DRMs. Fire would be too effective too often if leaders gave plus DRMs. Virtually all the DRMs are negative for poor conditions for fire. re Grenadiers, they have their own column on the morale check chart - not in the rules, not in the modifiers below the chart, on the chart itself. They have 8-8-7 instead of 7-7-6 on their own column.
The TdR check for terrain is only if you're in an enemy Engagement Zone (within 3 hexes), otherwise you just pay the MP cost.

You mentioned getting back to BAR as a possibility at some point. Any more thoughts on that, pro or con? That would be a lot of fun to watch.
Pro is I'd like to compare and give it a fair shake. Con is I don't want to, because it was painful.
