    The last time you were cranking that Buick over I didn't see any of the rockers on the left bank moving. Not sure what happened but that would explain the lack of compression on that side of the motor.

    Maybe I am wrong, but last attempt to start the Buick, the driver-side front rockers, at least 4 of the them were doing nothing, at least it looked that way to me. All the popping up the carb says valves are stuck somewhere.

    That is not the least expensive Buick in ‘64. We had the least which was very similar to the Skylark. It was a Special Coupe. Ours had the V6 with the aluminum heads AND it had the factory 3 speed manual. No A/C, no radio! It did have a heater. We used to joke that the only option was the passenger visor! Another difference was the decided lack of Chrome or Stainless trim. That panel on the rear that you eyed at the start was not on our Special. We did have one thin trim piece at the belt line.
    I loved that car!! We had it until about 1973 I think. By that time it had rusted badly above the rear axle and one of the gas tank straps broke. Also my Dad had taken a backwoods trail and came down off a drop onto a rock right under the driver’s front seat which resulted in a hole which constantly expanded. When the seat mount rusted through we simply ran a 2x4 from the trans hump to the doorsill. Yeah, REAL SAFE!! There was no floor for the rear seat passenger, driver side. The rubber floor covering was held up by some stiff wire and the ebrake cable!! It met its demise because of carb trouble. I had the carb in the basket of my bicycle and was riding over to our favorite Nbhd. garage when several of the smaller parts bounced loose and fell through and into the sewer. As it was to be my car, if I could get it fixed, and I couldn’t afford the new carb and none were to be had in the junkyard, I moved on!! To a ‘63 Cadillac Series 75 Personal Limousine!! A story for another time!!

    • @whattherust
      @whattherust  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Right on, I had forgotten that the Special was available in 64. That is a great story of yours. I can relate. My parents had a 64 Olds wagon with see-through floors. We would get wet going through large puddles.

  • @markboyce1001
    @markboyce1001 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    It look like the valves not seating up, , popping through the intake valves, there was a lot of dirt in the carb, dirt getting down in those valves , preventing them from sealing up, but I had no doubt that working with it , despite what was wrong with it, that you could have got that Buick motor running, you 2 always figured it out.waiting to watch your next challenge.

    • @whattherust
      @whattherust  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I need to take another crack at it. It might be the valves, so the next step will be a compression test. Thanks for the support Mark!

    oh my, if Christine picks a challenge, she picks a CHALLENGE! :)
    aside compression issues I have a feeling the ignition point is too early. I could swear seeing the engine being pushed back a bit before the flame shot up the carb. of course a worn-down camshaft makes matters worse.
    young master Lugnut is an interesting indivual, awake, interested, askign educated questions... I see a new generation of car experts growing up. :)

    those rocker arms on that buick 350 came out in aprox 1967 to 1969. the 340 wich was a smaller bore 350 had the same type the linkage and pedal setup are a nice feature. it originally was powered by the little 300 nailhead. another freind in school had a 1966 buick special with a 300 2bbl and he rebuilt the engine and abused it way to much and it took the abuse. his mother had a 1969skylark that my friends brother painted the car blue and it had the 350 2bbl. it ran nice. the family had a bunch of buicks. his father had passed away i think he had made it to 101 years old. the family had 8 kids. those were the days when things ran different and were of course easier to fix. ill bet that 350 that was put in thier probably jumped time. cant wait for the next one keep wrenchin and take care you two.

    And that Skylark had factory air!
    In 1970, I bought a 66 Buick Special wagon with three on the tree. There must not have been a blanking plate available for the quadrant opening on the dashboard when the car went down the assembly line. The workers used a rough cut piece of black cardboard, taped to the inside of the dashboard, to cover the hole!

    If you want to save time trying to guess if you have the timing right, set the #1 to TDC, add on the spark tester to #1 and with the key on rotate the distributor till the tester fires. If it were me, I would remove both rocker assemblies and soak them a while, and in that while do a leak down test on all cylinders with all valves closed. Don't do a compression test, do a leak down. Then after rockers are installed, do the compression test. Flames up the carb is not always timing, it is more likely stuck intake valves.
    If a high compression rebuild engine doesn't have a large enough carb, it will starve for air. I have actually seen a 14 1/2 to 1 compression 327 eat the air horn on a Holly 750cfm carb. It was like watching sand in a hour glass (full race cam). Idled at 3,000 and shook every picture off the walls with J&R big tube open headers.
    I think most mechanics have memorized 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

    I would think a little oil in each cylinder would boost compression enough to bust that buick off, but I thought it seemed a little out of time too. Cant say without being there with it! Good try on her though, always enjoyable with you guys! Til the next 1!

    If that's a 75-77 buick 350 they are slugs. No power, terrible fuel mileage. In the mid 80s I bought a 77 Regal. 0-60 in about 1 minute, 1/4 mile in about 1.5 minutes. Swapped it for a 72 350 2bbl chev 350 and then it ran sweet and left rubber lol. Great video as always. I love Buicks. My fav was a 94 Park Avenue with a 3800.

    The Buick is a factory a/c car. As fir the manual shifr, a lot of people of that era only drove manual shift cars, and never learned to drive automatics. My Godfather next door, who was a call fireman in our Massachusetts town only drove manuals. Once my father tried to teach him how to drive automatic but he couldn't do it.

    my parents bought a new 1968 Impala and they got notice of a recall for suspect engine mounts. The fix was to add a length of chain so if the engine mount did fail the engine would be contained.

    You have a flat cam or stuck lifters, on that Buick that’s my guess..some tappets were moving barely, some not at all. Your helper should have spotted that..keep up the good work..

    • @whattherust
      @whattherust  29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You are spot on. I did go back and give that Buick another try. The cam is wiped out. I thought it might have been an issue with the rockers arms, since those have a tip on them that can separate, but that was not the case.

    Put some transmission fluid down the spark plug holes to create some compression. It might start, let it sit and come back to it. I'd like to see it running

    I'm going to suggest to Richard a safety tip. Pleasecut some squares of plywood large enough to place your jack stands on to keep them from sinking into the ground, much safer. I would not crawl under a car without more support. Just a suggestion. Be safe, the first priority.
