Why Is PlayStation So SUCCESSFUL?

- Since the day it debuted in Japan in late 1994, PlayStation has been a giant in the games industry. Saying that is, frankly, quite an understatement. PlayStation established itself as a major players in gaming at its very inception, and crucially, has followed up on that with many years of improvements and major successes. Of course, it's not all been smooth sailing- like pretty much every major company in the games industry, Sony has made and continues to make its fair share of bad decisions, and has often seen the dire consequences of those bad decisions. If, however, you were to both look at PlayStation right now, and look holistically at what it's achieved throughout its history, you can't think of many other brands in the games industry that come close.
What's the secret sauce then? What's the key to PlayStation's success? What exactly are the parts of Sony's strategy that the company has nailed down so well that it only seems to be going from strength to strength, even after the massive numbers it's seen over the years, with no signs of stopping down? The answer to that, as you might imagine, is multifaceted - you can't boil down years of sustained success to just a few points, after all - and depending on how far back you're looking, the answer might also vary a bit. - เกม
I'm surprised that there was no mention of the PS2 being the most affordable DVD player when it came out, and the PS3 being the same for Blu Ray for a while there. Their medium leadership was a big part of their ongoing success.
This is such a huge load of bs! If that was a big part of what it took to be a successful console then Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360, PSP and DS wouldn’t have been so much successful. We saw MS believing this BS and focusing on media when Xbox one came out and we all know how that turned out. At the end of the day games are what makes a console to be successful or fail.

Yes, MS is always a bit late to the party, while Sony moved on and improved and invented new things, while MS is not able to catch up till this day.
Their exclusive games are some of the best out there. Just God of War and Spiderman, were some of the best games last gen had to offer.
Ghost of Tsushima and the Horizon games are also awesome.
The fact of the matter is is that most people started off with PS1 and stuck with PS1 every gen it's really not the exclusives only fan boys say exclusives but in reality it's not

Honestly it might not seem like a big thing but I believe the new Dualsense will end up being a boon for PS5 going forward. Once you go Dualsense you don't go back.

Agreed. Just wish the battery lasted longer. I still like the other features of my Series x better but I prefere to play some games on my PS5 because of the haptic feedback.

Nowadays it really doesn’t matter much where we play since most games are available on both consoles, but I like the Xbox better since it tends to have improvements in graphics and/or fps and
because I play a lot of old games via retro-compatibility and retro arch and I also have more storage on it.
Only Astro bot is great with dualsense. The other exclusives are ok
I’m old so for me it was resident evil on PlayStation 1, then I just stuck out with every other PlayStation and now the 5. Plus I’m an old gamer I love some single player masterpieces that PlayStation create so cheers to that.

Skipping over the first party/exclusive games of the PS3 in this video is a crime. The PS3 had SO many more exclusives and more varied/risk taking games than the PS4 ever did. It had so many genres. Uncharted, The Last of Us, Littlebigplanet, inFAMOUS, Motorstorm, ModNation Racers, Puppeteer, Folklore, Resistance, Killzone, Twisted Metal, Sly Cooper, PS Allstars Battle Royale, Warhawk, SOCOM, MAG, Fat Princess.
PlayStation is so successful because they have both great exclusive games and third party support, you look at Nintendo they have great exclusive games but weak third party support. Xbox has the strong third party support but lacked great exclusive games outside of Gears and Halo.
xbox isn't after exclusives but quality performance and gameplay. harping on one thing is like putting your eggs into one basket.

PlayStation is indeed one of the all time best consoles in 90s gaming history,even Sony can make a whole lot of mistakes over the years like PS Vita,PlayStation Classic and the PSVR. Overall they still manage their mistakes. Let’s see what the future holds for PlayStation.
PSVR was not a failure, if it was Sony wouldn’t produce PSVR 2.
The biggest win for Sony was the lack of control for 3rd party devs as opposed to Nintendo at the time of the PS1. The 3rd parties had a more significant share of the profits due to game sales and how cheap it was to produce CDs, which Sony Music was able to facilitate due to being in that industry.
I can name a few things... great games, solid 1st party and 3rd party support, no censorship (before Sony moved to Commifornia)....

Because, the controller doesn’t make loud obnoxious clicking noises that wake up the neighbor, and the dashboard is artistically enjoyable and easy to view/use as it bolsters the game introductions.
I love PlayStation. I've owned every home console (minus the PS5). It was always there whenever I needed something to do in my free time. Even though I don't agree with all the choices they made, Sony will always be my go-to for gaming.
If you still can’t the PS5, go to Sony Direct. It’s still currently in stock, so hopefully that will help you.
That's good that you found something to love, it's too bad that Sony doesn't love you and never have. That being said, why should they when PS fanboys give their complete and utter blind devotion, no matter what Sony does. I wood weep but I won't, I'll just read your rants justifying why the console increase and £70 games are good for the fan base.

Used to skip remedial classes cause my friend had a PS1.. would play ff7 on my friends ps1.
Teacher called my mum to say i been skipping class, i told her the truth.. back then ps1 was expensive for us.. waited another 2 years or so before i could get one.
Been playing ever since.. own all playstation now and still gaming strong.

I was 5 when the PS1 came out, and there were a couple in the neighborhood, so we had a little access to them. It’s breadth of genres was the sauce. Your friend’s dad had the sports titles and two controllers (which was huge), and we were all kinda still trying to pick our jaws up seeing where graphics were. We still went back to the N64 for any real multiplayer stuff, and even that had its woes, but thinking about sitting down back then with my best friend on his couch and playing games sounds really good with a PlayStation involved.
Of course...the load times, and the graphics now looking back, and all that jazz. It was rough in a lot of ways, but it had a superior air to it at least in our neck of the woods. And the PS2 completely owned the block.

It can boil down to the start of the PS4 gen (for more recent history).
The PR disaster of the Xbox One (which carried for 5 or more years, thanks the gaming media) and the WiiU which was not popular at the time of that console release, settled the PS4 as the system to get.
For years, PS4 was the "powerful" console that had the 1080p version of the multiplats, secured must have exclusive games or exclusive content in the multiplat games, it was simply a no brainer to get one.
Then they also got their first party games, which most of em are bluckbusters.
can't say it better then that tbh. Wii u and xbox one beginnings led to Sony get the casuals which is where Sony makes its money 80% of revenue is from 3rd party sales. So who ever gets casuals this gen will be the more successful. Cod being on xbox is gonna be a big roadblock for Sony that they might end up losing a good portion of casuals.
Playstation simply has better marketing and better games that are exclusive. That is all

My brother had the choice between the Ps1 and the N64. I was a huge SNES-Fan and loved it. But my brother bought the PS1 and many months later, i began to love the PS1 the same way, i loved the SNES (till today i love Nintendo/PlayStation/PC(Xbox) all the same).
I decided to get my first playstation, after owning a switch for awhile, because it's the console that offers the most games that appeal to me. Nintendo doesn't make much I care for anymore and Xbox doesn't make anything that looks good to me, though there are some games 2 to 4 years away that will likely get me to buy a series x as well.

You wont need to buy the xbox console, you can just sign up for GP and stream the games you want, if all you're going to do is play 2 xbox games then it wont make sense getting the console.
I think its the quality of their exclusives. Look at almost all of their exclusive games. The graphics and story and the talent their studios have on these games is just amazing. You can not like their exclusives but you cant deny how incredible polished their games are.

Well its a little more than a few games. I enjoy sports games too and I usually buy sports games on console since for some reason sports games are better on consoles. I know you a typical PC guy who are anti consoles but I grew up playing consoles and didnt built my own PC until I was old enough to afford all the pc parts. I hate using mouse and keyboard when i play on my pc so i have an xbox series x controller for it. Use 90% of my pc gaming with a gamepad . Im 40 so been gaming since 5. Im just a gamer man. I game on any platform. I dont use the tv for my gaming btw. I use a gaming monitor for both

Playstation 2 was good. Playstation 1 was iconic. Starting from Playstation 3 they started lacking. Xbox started to overtake it.
Ps4 was better than Xbox One though, and also the 360 stopped being better than Ps3 around 2010, when the Ps3 exclusive games started to become one hit after another
Xbox had a few years early in the Xbox one where they fell off but since Phil took over Xbox has been the best platform by a long shot amazing part is the future is so bright

See I'm the opposite but that's because I collect for PlayStation. But I have a Series X and just never turn it on. I have GP and there is nothing on there that interests me that I haven't already got on PlayStation. I have never liked anything Microsoft have made other than Forza Horizon. So the only thing I use it for other then Forza is Retroarch for retro achievements.

I’m the opposite my Xbox just collects dust as I really only like gears and forza on Xbox. Plus I’ve always had a PlayStation. I didn’t get a Xbox until Xbox one.
The X series has the exact same price for games I hate how people hype up GP most third party killer apps aren't on there. Lastly you can upgrade last gen titles for dirt cheap on PlayStation I got Nioh II for nine bucks and upgraded to next gen version for free did the same for Spider man MM.

It all goes back to the success of the original Playstation. The game catalog was very large (making it suitable for both traditional and casual gamers), the CD was easier to store than the cartridge, the price, etc. With the Playstation, Nintendo started to have a real rival (Sega only really competed with it when Genesis vs SNES).

I got my PS5 mainly for PSVR2. I loved the first one, and PCVR is in a slump, or mostly ports of mobile VR's Quest games...

Quality 🔥
First-party exclusives earned my loyalty to Playstation over the decades. I love single-player games and the Playstation has GoTY exclusives aplenty. I actually just purchased my first ever Xbox and while I am happy I now have both consoles the lack of first-party exclusives is glaring. PS+ Premium catalogue in its short life is better than GamePass in its current form.
I dont understand why you need first party exclusives to be happy. There are so many third party games who are better than Sonys exclusives: elden ring, cyberpunk, assassin's Creed, CoD

From day dot I've been PlayStation.I own all PS consoles except ps5. Even now, once price & availability become more constant I'll buy it, but there's too many issues right now for me to do that

Under his helm, this is currently the most greedy and arrogant Sony since the PlayStation 3 era. It‘s not that they repeat the mistakes of the PlayStation 3 era, they simply create new ones. Increasing the prices of first party titles in Europe to whopping 80 Euros, monopolozing their digital content via their store only (the current lawsuit), weird censorship policies, greedy microtransactions in Gran Turismo 7 and now raising the price of the PlayStation 5 mostly in Europe to 550 Euros. Especially here in Europe the euphoria concerning the PlayStation brand received a crack due to many bad decisions they‘ve made since the PlayStation 5 launch. They will clearly stay strong as the market leader at the end of this generation, but people will start to look for alternatives, that‘s only normal.

At a time when Nintendo was dominating the industry with terribly unfair business practices, the PS1 came in with good hardware and treating third parties with respect.
They built a loyal fanbase with the PS1 era that exploded with the PS2.
That's my take, anyway.
And Sony is becoming the Nintendo of this generation with their awful business practices.

Sony went for the CD instead of cartridge. They also had great IPs and 3rd party support.
The ps5 will be around for like 10 years for its life support. That’s based on the fact that not everyone in the world has them either from scalpers or by the manufacturer chips not being produced fast enough.
I have loved PlayStation since my first console (PS2), but the way that they have been going lately along with games being limited time exclusive has me planning to get a PC instead of a PS5. I have my PS+ membership paid up through 2027, but I don't want to stay on console.

I had a Playstation 4 but I would never buy a PlayStation again, I could not get into their ecosystem and seeing where they are going with their greedy anti consumer culture, that is the nail in the coffin, it is Xbox and gamepass all day for me going forward
I dont reccomend it the xbox is dissapointing and ive loved xbox my whole life besides gamepass is kinda sad to scroll through and find nothing your better off staying with playstation

PC honestly just means STEAM, it's a growth for Valve and no one else. A Valve platform monopoly is not a good thing so Sony (and also Microsoft) should make their own stores instead of simple plopping everything on STEAM.

Steam doesn’t have to give out free games. They’re on top for a reason. Gamers are now getting this “free” mentality and it is getting out of control. These platforms owe us nothing but great games. Epic game store is far a and I refuse to support Epic any further than I already do.
Loved that recently most exclusive games have came to pc, but recently i saw alot of third party games not get to XBOX, like Stray, Kena, FF7, Sifu. That might be one of the reason XBOX numbers are lower than PS, along with lack of first party exclusives, XBOX might be an all platform company, but they need to be more aggressive with exclusivity deals to compete in the numbers

I loved the ps vita. I like switch more than playstation, but if sony ever made a new ps vita, and it was cheap like the switch, and it had better specs and it's own line of games...and could dock and come with it's own mini playstation controller, I'd totally go for it. I have had ps since ps1 and got first xbox this gen and tbh its replaced my ps5 because of the more value I get from the games then I do on my ps games.
