I was in college when they came out with New Coke. I have friends who still swear that it was all a ruse to get everyone used to drinking a sweeter Coca-Cola, so that when they inevitably returned to the "original formula" no one would notice that they were now making it with corn syrup instead of cane sugar. Of all the conspiracy theories in the world, this is the only one I'm willing to believe. I'm a native Georgian, BTW, and have lived in Atlanta (the home of Coca-Cola) for the past 32 years, and I prefer Pepsi.
Maraschino is such a hard flavor to work with because of how pungent it is but man does it really sing in the right place. Love the clarification on what “improved” means and a frankly perfectly balanced recipe to go with it. Great video as always!
6:57 and that, folks, is why most bars garnish with a twist. The waiters will kill us if they have to deal with balancing an untwisted strip of zest all the way to the table.
Today was special. I learned something new. I make A LOT of old fashions, actually, let's be honest, I make a lot of cocktails. But I've never heard of Boker's Style bitters until today. So, I will have to buy some Boker's bitters before I try an Improved Whiskey Cocktail and decide which is "better". Additionally, demerara syrup in an old fashioned? That's good, but if you really want to go old school, why not Gum syrup? I believe that is more authentic. Anders, Love your show!! If you are ever in San Diego, CA (we have a lot of great bars) let your followers know, we would love to have a drink with you. :)
I've been really enjoying the clips demonstrating the tinkering process you go through to figure out your preferred specs for the cocktails. Always appreciate the history lessons as well!
The Improved Whiskey cocktail is my favorite cocktail. I make that for myself probably every other time I'm mixing up cocktails. Trying to order one when you are out is challenging, which is why I started mixing them myself. Thanks for helping spread the gospel!
My recipe for an improved Old Fashioned I came up with for st Patrick’s day a few years ago 60ml Jamason’s orange whiskey 25ml simple syrup 3 dashes orange bitters Build and stir and strain Served in a rocks on the rocks garnish with orange peel (express the oil)
I’m team improved! I LOVE these, the layered sweetness and longer evolution is totally up my alley. I personally do a split of ango and Peychaud’s for the bitters in mine, but I'll definitely be giving bokers a shot the next time I make one!
I am the same as you. I split ango and peychaud and the evolution and increased complexity is what I look for when I just want to sit and enjoy the cocktail. Old fashioneds are typically when I am doing something and want a drink but don’t want to think about what I’m drinking
So my go to cocktail is an old fashion. I do enjoy watching your videos to learn more about whiskey cocktails. I also like the process you thru to get the right balance for the drink. Keep up the great work.
“If you use Peychaud’s, you’re getting awful close to a Sazerac.” Actually you’d have exactly a Sazerac, because that drink is just a branded form of Improved Whiskey Cocktail as it was served in the Sazerac House. Some say a sazerac doesn’t have maraschino, but there are supposedly records of a recipe for “Bottled Sazerac” that included it, as well as mixing Angostura with the Peychaud’s
@@AndersErickson Ngl; here in the UK I always mix Agostura & Peychaud's in my Sazerac. But I've never been to NOLA, and more flavour is good flavour, no?
Anders, I’ve been watching your vids for some time, and while I like them all, the uncooperative lemon peel just has me rolling. Thanks for all the wonderful sips, tips and recipes!
This is a great cocktail. I love an old fashioned and a Sazerac and now the improved whiskey cocktail. They are all wonderful and interestingly distinct. Thank you for this.
A friend of mine maintains that "New Coke" was actually a masterstroke of marketing. Coca-Cola had lost market share to Pepsi, and encouraged people to compare New to Classic. The assumption was that a lot of former customers had forgotten how good Classic Coke really was. It worked!
Not true. I was there and Coke actually removed the old recipe from the market for awhile until there was a hew and cry which caused them to bring it back.
@@mikeg2306 That doesn't mean that my friend's opinion is untrue. "You don't miss the water till the well runs dry." New Coke was designed to taste like Pepsi. Why would Coca-Cola abandon what made them rich? Makes no sense. You were there, and I wasn't. But it's hard to believe such a large, rich and old company would do something so dumb!
I love an Old Fashioned and use your recipe every time I make one. I feel I’ll prefer it but will definitely try the Improved Cocktail soon-ish. Awesome video as always Anders!
I’ve wound down my cocktailing exploration from the “make your own cordial for a singularly specific drink” into the minimal world of the utilitarian old fashions recently. And I have to say that, like the similar Sazerac, the less involved cocktails such as the Improved whiskey have a magic to them.
Not a big licorice/anise fan but decided I had to try. Bought a mini bottle of absinthe verte. At first, way too licoricey for my taste…but it’s growing on me. A nice change up. Thanks Anders!
Love Old Fashioneds, especially in the fall and winter! Here is my Signature Old Fashioned: Ingredients: - 1 orange wheel - 3or 4 Luxardo cherries - A few dashes of Orange Bitters - 3 ounces Four Roses Single Barrel bourbon - 1 ounce Rye whiskey (high proof, such as Rittenhouse or Wild Turkey 101) - 1 ounce simple syrup - Ice - 1 large ice cube - Orange peel (for garnish) - Angostura bitters (for spritzing) Directions: 1. In a rocks glass, muddle orange wheel and 3 or 4 Luxardo cherries with a few dashes of Orange Bitters 2. In a cocktail shaker, add 3 ounces of Four Roses Single Barrel bourbon, 1 ounce of Rye whiskey, and 1 ounce of simple syrup. 3. Add ice to the shaker and stir until chilled. 4. Strain the mixture into the rocks glass over the muddled orange and cherries. 5. Add 1 large rock of ice to the glass. 6. Rub the orange peel around the rim of the glass. 7. Using a cocktail atomizer, spray 2 or 3 spritzes of Angostura bitters over the top of the glass. 8. Garnish with an additional orange peel and a few Luxardo cherries
I tried, and frequently make both. It's a mood thing for me. (+ lemon peel availability) usually, I just go for the Old Fashioned for the simplicity, but if I'm feeling fancy, and I have a lemon at home, "Improved" it is.
