Inside Judy Garland’s home and a trip outside MGM studios

  • During a trip to LA in 2011 (for my USC Masters graduation), I took a rental car around to see Judy landmarks! Her Stone Canyon house and McCadden Place house are here as well as the exterior of MGM Studios in Culver City. I tried to go on the lot but the guard girls wouldn't let me! I've wandered them before (even got inside Soundstage 25!) but not this time. I did, however, manage to walk around a bit INSIDE Stone Canyon! What an almost religious experience THAT was! Enjoy! PS: I was VERY tired when I did this so please don't make any comments about my sounding drunk or stoned-I don't do either.

So great that you went inside! Some old-time stars stayed in their homes for decades. Too bad Judy didn’t; this house is gorgeous. I was a child actress in the 50’s & 60’s, & loved the MGM lot. Coincidentally ended up buying a house a few blocks away in the mid 70’s. Makes me sad to see the Sony sign every day when I pass by. Judy’s daughter, Lorna, & I became best friends in high school in West LA (1971). By then Judy was gone & Lorna lived with her dad and younger brother in Westwood. Thanks again for the tour!!

It is a good thing that the MGM property in Culver City, California became SONY PICTURES STUDIOS (Sony, Columbia, Tri-Star). MGM was not maintaining the facility and needed major renovation which is what SONY did with it. Deep pockets were needed and MGM didn't have the money or the desire to maintain it. The studio was originally Triangle Studios (Charles Ince).

@@drewnitchoff I belong to a home theater forum that organized trips to movie studios. I've visited every major studio--Sony (the old MGM/Columbia lot) Paramount, Fox, Universal, Warner Bros, and Disney. I got to hold an actual Oscar at Disney. That was a rush! I've been to the Nakatomi Tower seen in Die Hard, saw the house that Shirley Temple stayed in, saw where the parting of the Red Sea in The Ten Commandments was filmed, the Bates Motel in Psycho, village locations in the classic Universal monster films, saw the soundstage where Sunset Blvd. was filmed, and much more. I've seen many of the costumes worn in films (you might be amazed at how SMALL Hollywood stars are). Oh, and I've been to the old Forrest J. Ackerman mansion. That was a HUGE rush for fans of SF and horror movies! Loved seeing the Metropolis robot, a Bela Lugosi costume, models used in the original King Kong....just great stuff.

I know at one point Judy lived next door to Lana Turner and their daughters, Liza and Cheryl, used to play together. In fact one day the girls decided to switch parents so Cheryl spent the day with Judy and Liza with Lana. They switched back after supper. Judy and Lana got along really well. Would have loved to have heard some of those over-the-back-fence conversations.

My Mom was invited as a guest to the infamous MGM Auction-I remember seeing Judy’s Ruby Slippers!!!!
It’s horrific how so much of SPLENDOR and GORGEOUSNESS of Hollywood has been torn down - like the Garden of Alla or the Garden Court Apts. on Hollywood Blvd, I used to walk past it in the early 80’s after the punks moved in and christened it “Hotel Hell.”

Judy Garland went through a lot in her young life which is a reason for her wallowing in drugs and alcohol plus the wrong men. Give the woman a break.

Also James Stewart's home was also demolished by some foreigner (oil sheik?) who said the house "was a dump." This from a nincompoop whose family once lived where and in what?
Now the edifice looks like an abortion that only states "I got money." No taste, no class, no hope. Hell Jed Clampett knew not to mess with things he knew little about.
Even Lucille Ball's home is being gutted. I understand when someone buys a property they have a legal right to do whatever they choose to do, but gesh, no homage to the film history actors and actresses that once lived there?
