      @Luna T From the same lady who said that the midget who asked her out stood an inch high. Are you sure she wasn't exaggerating? She was one for the tall tale, was Judy. Remember: an alleged 72-hour stretch for an actor is a 72-hour stretch for the director, the cameramen, the floor crew, and all the extras.

    Judy always appeared the happiest when performing with Mickey Rooney. They truly had a great love for each other that far surpassed a romantic relationship. She was the sister he never had and he was probably the closest friend she ever had.

    I can't understand why MGM had such a problem with Judy's looks. She's very pretty.

    • @MaskedMan66
      @MaskedMan66 10 ปีที่แล้ว +78

      They had very dictatorial standards of beauty. To them, her nose was too snubby, her eyes were too wide apart, and her teeth needed "fixing." She was also quite voluptuous for her age, which studio heads felt "inappropriate," so she was put on a very strict diet to try and control her curves. Happily, that never quite worked out.

      Agreed, Shirley Temple doesn't look that much different to me than Judy Garland did. Both had the same wide eyed baby face, but Hollywood was so much nicer to Shirley than to Judy. I wonder why.

    • @MaskedMan66
      @MaskedMan66 9 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      HuggiMa
      It may have been as simple as Shirley was with a nicer studio. I mean, her life wasn't without its problems; she married before she was ready for it (she was 17), and that marriage fell apart. But her second one was solid.

    • @HuggiMa
      @HuggiMa 9 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      yes, Shirley's first marriage wasn't perfect, but that came after she was already an actor for many years. Compared to Judy multiple marriages, being forced to take drugs to act, as well as be picked on constantly for her appearance, Shirley's life in Hollywood was heaven.

      U R right there is nothing but within that nothing exists
      Everything in a swirling pulsating blackness
      yes but it
      Is different from the blackness we.now see. Because
      Every thing exists within it a connection to the UNIQUENESS of
      a energy can be made. Energy and matter cannot be destroyed.
      Mickey s and Judy's energy electronic, magnetic is as individual
      As thire finger prints in the denser form as body. Love
      Is eternal eg the love of most mothers, not romantic construct, but
      Love this intense emotion would have made a connection
      I know how.u feel I lost my beloved daughter
      and have tried to search for her in this what seems
      Nothing but darkness place?

Mickey is one of the most iconic and multi-talented actors of his era and all the generations that came after. What an amazing person too. So warm and passionate and never an unkind word about anyone. Stars were different back then I think. To say nothing of the amazing and beautiful and talented Judy Garland. What a fine pair. just a peachy existence ~ which it was not.
      Wouldn't it be amazing for some child to be reincarnated with Judy's lovely gift of song ~ we could use another voice like that now!

      Where it really became noticeable was in Girl Crazy. Before that, Rooney's antics would sort of overpower everyone else on the screen, but in that movie, she really "got it". Every eye was drawn to her in a way that was unlike any of the previous movies. At least that's my opinion. It's something she never lost in any of the following movies.

      Richard Donato I agree totally One critic noticed this in Easter Parade - even though she was dancing with Fred Astaire you only watch Garland
      Also her acting was so timeless that she springs out of the screen in Meet Me In St. Louis for example because the rest of the cast are acting in the style of the time but Judy could have done the scene yesterday - she's streets ahead and so fresh and somehow so modern

    I fell in love with judy at three years old watching the wizard of oz. I asked my mom if she was still around, and my mom said, "No, Hollywood killed her!" You would think that was a sadistic thing to say to a three year old, but after watching several well done biographies, I have learned that my mother kept it real with me from an early age. Now my mom and Judy are together.

      In my opinion that's how parenting should work, giving children the skin of the apple rather then covering it up with caramel. I wouldn't say something like "No, Hollywood killed her!" but i could tell your Mother had good intentions getting you ready for the world. I wish i could've met Judy even though it wouldn't have gone very well lol.

      @@fosterglucose3214 That is so strange and cruel. A child will have plenty of time to grow up and be hard and negative no need to rush it. A simple " No luv she is not " would suffice. Caramel apple indeed.

    Mickey always knew how to play a scene.
    Judy melded the words and acting seamlessly. When she’s singing Our Love Affair… all her hopefulness followed by the annoyed eyerolling at his cluelessness so subtle and fluid from one emotion to another.

    Every time I think of Judy Garland, her beautiful voice, her smile her ability to make you laugh, fall in love with her, I get sad too. I think about how the old Hollywood machine, the studio, her mother, later her husbands, pushed and pushed her, giving her those pills because she was too fat *pooh on that* and then downers so she could sleep. Judy just wanted to be loved, don't we all?

      I could add to this, but you said it beautifully...clearly her children adore her to this day, it's not necessary to share all the grief with the world, we know they
      loved her, wished better for her, yet accept what is. Pretty remarkable.

      I'm reading the book Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland and it is almost too match to wrap my head around. The one man who love and adored her died when she was so young and barely got to see her when he was alive because her mother saw Judy as her golden ticket, carting her all over. I know her father had his own fair share of troubles, but his love for Judy was not one of them.
      I can't imagine a world where my mother showed me no affection.
      Sometimes I think kids today have it too easy, but then I read about her life growing up and I think, that kids then had it too rough. Not sure where the balance is.

    They had a beautiful love for each other! It goes beyond friendship and it's not romance. It's a deep soul mate love that I think both of them were always able to hold onto even when they were no longer together at MGM and of course didn't die with Judy, it still lives on in Mickey's heart!
    It's a love we got to share with them. It's a wonderful gift that wasn't an act. And I think that's what makes Judy and Mickey so special, they were never an act. They were genuine.
