They're welcome to cope. I personally think they should follow my example and stop watching award shows and taking reviewers and heavily-monetized events seriously regarding their favorite games. It's not like anyone else's opinion truly matters if your own mind is made up.
And that being said, I adore BG3. Best RPG I have ever played, because it's a REAL RPG, built off of Dungeons and Dragons. I hate D&D but I make exceptions for studios which deserve to win after the tribulations they endured. Much like I hate Harry Potter but Avalanche was suffering under different publishers and finally could make a game with passion. A studio that breathes life into their games should defy all odds. These are the people I want to keep making these experiences regardless of IP.

As for popularity... don't bank on it. The previous game from Larian was Divinity Original Sin 2, and it is more or less considered a cult classic.. in fact, exactly one year after release Larian dropped the definitive edition, completely free for anyone who already owned the game, and they kept adding stuff like GM mode.
If they do the same for BG3, modders are going to be creating free content and additional campaigns for years to come.

Playing Baldur’s Gate 3 was the biggest breath of fresh air I’ve had in gaming for a LONG time. Honestly when I first heard about it I was kinda turned off if anything. Turned off for the same reason these people criticize it; the turn based combat. But when I saw what others could do in the game, and the huge amount of player freedom, and the literal narrative sandbox that is bg3, I had to try for myself. AND OH GOD!!! Stepping out of my comfort zone made me discover a game that I now consider to be in my all times top 3 (at first place)
I feel like these people (in the video) are the reason we get the shitty games in the industry, they always want the same thing, and when a slightly unconventional type of game stands out from the mass they dislike it instantly instead of giving it a try. Honestly, to anyone considering buying the game, DO IT. You have 10x your moneys worth, with literal unlimited hours of content. Bg3 will keep me entertained far longer than any other AAA out there. Money ABSOLUTELY well spent 👍

I gotta say, I fully agree that turn-based RPGs are a rarity for me. And because it's D&D I didn't have much intention of playing it.
But then a buddy got me Divinity Original Sin 2 and we played it to get in the spirit for BG3's release. I was thoroughly perplexed by everything I could do, and it really helped that I had someone with me that knew how to use the system well. If I didn't have him I likely never would have given Larian a chance myself.
I'll bet these haters didn't have friends that were into this genre so they soured on it instead of giving it a chance. Most of them didn't even get the game and think they have authority over it's quality when they don't even know. That's human tribalist nature on full display :)
One day they might get over themselves and give it a go, but until then I really don't care much for what they say when they don't even like the genre.

@@MorfsProwerme at least, I cannot get into these type of games. I didn’t even heard about Baldur’s Gate 3 until the game awards and that’s saying a lot about it. Was there even a huge marketing push for this game? Is anybody buying this? Is this game even selling well? Just by looking at this game, it just looks like your typical generic Dungeons and Dragons clone and I’m not even into the whole D&D thing since it’s a very niche genre. Maybe I’m too cynical but this is gets a huge pass for me.

    • @MorfsPrower
      @MorfsPrower 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@luisquintero7359 I don't even play it at all lately, since I've been so sucked into Vintage Story. However, I still hold the sentiment that this game is great and a testament to the full potential of a turn-based tactical RPG.
      To answer your questions...
There was not much of a marketing push at all in fact. It spread generally by word of mouth apart from the common TH-camr coverage.
People bought this game to death during it's launch window, so it made off pretty well despite having to buy into Hasbro's D&D setting from their own coffers.
What sets this apart from the rest of the D&D clones is the fact that the sheer creativity you can employ to problem solve situations is kinda crazy. I've seen people stack boxes to form giant climbing towers to sequence break the game. I've seen people set chain explosions to clear entire regions of enemies. The versatility and variety the game has to offer is better than all the prior entries in the genre as a whole.
But I perfectly get it if it's not a game for you. Hell, it's not a genre for me either, but I gave this game gigantic exceptions because it was so well done.
And bear in mind, I really despise Hasbro, WotC, and the D&D brand in general. They stifle creativity in the face of it, and even attempted to rob creatives of their own work for their own gain. I really can't stand D&D and WotC.
The tabletop RPG genre has a lot of fantastic alternatives though, and it's that creativity that I return to it for time and again. To the point where I made my own system for use amongst friends, which can be used for any setting and any design, and I've been working on a number of settings for friends to play. It really isn't for everyone, as I've found out the hard way lol.

The only thing I’ve dealt with so far is immediately choosing what bit my male/female character has. Personally I’m tired of that. And the writing and story for SM2 was worked on by “Sweet Baby Inc” which really hurt the game.
The story beats were all there but changing things for the sake of “inclusiveness” (despite them STILL usuing the wrong flag and forcing their “Gender Neutral Spanish” dub is ridiculously disappointing and disrespectful. Peter, harry, and miles were not given the time or character development they deserved. All being pushed to the side (Especially Peter) for the sake of those god awful MJ missions. We got those instead of possibly Venom free roam and Venom missions. So that’s my issue with the “woke” being shoehorned into the game.
BG3 is fine so far, besides the very easy seduction of literally every party member. That is infuriatingly frustrating when I’m just trying to be a good person and everyone is throwing themselves at me. And the weird beastiallity shit with the bear transformation scene.

Hot-take: Turn-based Combat is the height of gameplay. It requires thought, tactics, and stratagy rather than things like reflexes and reaction time, which are controlled by the amount of money the player can spend on their internet connection and computer setup.

The game tries to emulate this feeling of curiosity as you play. It doesn't try to limit you. Choices genuinely matter, even combat does. If you fail to save an NPC that npc is gone. You failed to save them and thats part of your story. Or if you really dislike one npc you can choose to attack them. Or you could try to talk your way out of it and try to avoid killing. Larian deserves the win.
2017: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
    2018: God of War
    2019: Sekiro: Shadow Die Twice
2020: The Last of Us Part 2
    2021: It Takes Two
    2022: Elden Ring
    2023: Baldur's Gate 3
Every year, these games deserve the award on that year. They made waves across the internet; whether good or bad, these games solidified a change from the mundane.
Like those fanboys who did not expect Baldur's Gate 3 to win, it was a massive shockwave over the internet when developers said not to think that would be a standard. It is not a standard in gaming; however, I approve of Larian Studio's way of releasing the game.
They took their time and released early access for those willing to pay for the privilege of playing the game early. Meanwhile, they took their time, changed the game, listened to players' feedback, and dared to say, "Nah, it's your game," with No DLC, no microtransaction, no loot box, no game as a service/online only, no stupid grind...etc. Larian Studio respects its customers and is willing to change the game's ending to give closure to each party member the player has in camp.
Usually, other companies would make this a paid DLC if it were another company. Remember Bioware selling you the "true ending" as paid DLC? I understand BG3 is not for everyone, but I fully respect Larian for showing the industry how to treat its customers. Unlike Blizzard/Activision, EA, Ubisoft, Bethesda, Bungie, and many more, if you mess with your customers, the customer will drop you off for someone who will treat them better.
All these games stood out from the rest and gave publishers and developers what the customer craved; they stood out from the others.
Games are amazing, but when publishers are pumping out mediocrity, we will forget them or not, and we will not be all that excited for a sequel. Look at the GTA 6 trailer, a game series that gets one release every 4 to 5, maybe ten years. The anticipation of a good game alone is enough to get people excited. Unlike Assassin's Creed, CoD, and EA Sports, these games are just ... meh. It would be different if they were released every 4 to 5 years. Knowing the developers have time to build the game, bug test, playtest, and make the community, their game will have long legs to stand on.
PS. Also, congratulations to CD Projekt for turning things around with Cyberpunk 2077/Phantom Liberty. Typically, a game would remain broken and count their losses, but no, they dig deep, spend more on Cyberpunk 2077, and deliver a masterpiece of a DLC. It is the same with Hello Games for making No Man's Sky from a meme game to a groundbreaking labor of love. Both of these companies did an exceptional job. Instead of giving us mediocre games and running to the bank laughing like other companies we know of.

You had the Xbox fanboys accusing the industry and the awards of anti Xbox bias and PS fanboys saying there's no such thing. Now that their favorite game was nominated for 7 awards and won none, there's anti PlayStation agenda when in reality there's a much bigger wider library of games and studios making games outside of console manufacturers competing as well and maybe there was just strong competition with many good games this year.

    *terrible latinx spanish dub.
    *the mary jane missions.
    *the injection of lgbtq+ stuff.
*the fact that you play as a deaf girl.
*mary jane is made to look like one of the insomniac writers, and insomniac denying the face they changed her character model.
*mary jane and broken op stun gun
*Bryan Intihar is not listening to player feedback.
*the face that you only play with venom for a short amount of time.
*the game at launch had a ton of bugs
*having a good chunk of spider-man's rogues gallery giving up the ghost at the hands of kraven.

I stopped watching E3 several years ago, and awards shows always left a sour taste in my mouth. Games are meant to be fun, not to be second day jobs that you feel obligated to rabidly defend when it's not winning some petty awards.
People thinking some genres are lesser than others have some issues they don't know how to parse. I have preferential choices in game genres myself; BG3 is not one of them. But it's genre-breaking. It is more than just some turn based clicker, like some people cope with. The fact that people which don't like the turn based RPG genre are finding the game to be incredible is a good sign that Larian is doing something right, and they are. Belittling their players only makes the bullies look weak and petty.

RDR2 gives you the illusion of being open, but the main story quests are all extremely linear and need to be done in a specific order.
There are even markers on your map pointing exactly where you need to go for the next quest and the entire map is visible from the beginning of the game so it never feels like you are actually exploring the world of your own volition.

Areas of the map also unlock organically as you explore them rather than the entire map being visible from the start.

While I personally have problems with BG3, it's not my personal best of year because of said problems, I won't claim it doesn't deserve it. Yeah, I preferred Zelda, but I honestly don't care that it didn't win Game of the Year.
I'm also of the mindset that remakes do deserve to be nominated for game of the year... because being a remake doesn't automatically guarantee success, it guarantees comparison to the older version, and the better the older version is, the more the new one needs to work. Resident Evil 4 Remake took what was already a monumental game, and took it to the next level.
The only nomination I didn't agree with was Spiderman 2. That was such a safe, pandering game that I was surprised it got as high as it did.
But, if you asked me my personal "Best game of the year", I think I'd have to go with Remnant 2. Phenomenal game. Indie game of the year goes to Cassette Beasts hands down.
    edit:
As for setting a standard, the only one I'll agree with is that games should be launched in their full state. BG3 launched after 3 years of Early Access. You can say it launched complete because they had 3 years to dial things in and add things while receiving money and feedback from players. BG3 did not launch out of nowhere, it was playable since 2020. Many feature adds and changes were made since then.

Divinity Original Sin 2 has many of the things people are praising BG3 for, but nobody cared for that game for some reason...
And again, not to discredit BG3, it's a good game. I just think people are praising it a little too hard.

Someone must ripped open the eyes of those marvel fans to see that SPIDERMAN 2 IS NOT THAT AMAZING

"turn based games won game of the year, the state of the industry"
Ah yes, because a game that lasts 10 hours and has half of the runtime in cutscenes and qtes, which is actually the standard currently, is somehow better than a turn based games with 90% gameplay and hundreds of hours of playtime.

I initially wasn’t a fan of turn-based games except for Pokémon, but a few months ago I tried One Piece Odyssey and it really warmed me up to the idea of turn-based games

turn based has got me pumped right now though. Yakuza: Like a Dragon was good. SEa of Stars was fine. Like a Dragon: Infinite wealth Demo plays good....I'm super pumped for that. I enjoyed Like a Dragon a lot as turn based. I'll play bg3 one day,.
My brother in Law bought a Steam Deck to pretty much just play BG3 on instead of his work laptop. LOL Dude isn't even a gamer. LOL So who played it? A shit ton of people. Even people who aren't "gamers" came out to play it, That's actually what makes things successful is when it breaks out of the box.

It came out last year but I'd recommend chained echoes as well. A bit older the league of legends ruined king game and then the devs older game battle chasers nightwar

People saying it's not "game of the year caliber" is crazy. Acting as if it's not in the discussion for best game of this century. Absolutely wild takes.
