- Game of the Year awards seem to have brought us a ton of salt as a Christmas present! I nearly passed out from all this salt we got going around! It had over 2 million people playing the early access on PC. Then when it launched it had over 850,000 on PC people playing it at a single time.
Not to mention there's so much to do in the game vs being done with the game in less than 10 hours and have no replay value.

I'm surprised people were surprised BG3 wasn't going to win GOTY. It has the same thing like Elden Ring last year where it had people who don't even like or play those type of games play it and had game developers totally jealous of its success.
When a game causes devs from other studious to be salty that should be a sign it's going to take GOTY.

If they want to complain about anything, it's that the award winners' speeches were rushed, while the show pandered Hollywood.
Meaning no disrespect, but why would you think that two sequels that are more or less the same game as the previous one, would win over a game that pushed the boundary of the genre to the point where other game executives called it an "anomaly" out of fear that they would have to put more effort in?

I completely agree that BG3 is game of the year, but calling TOTK ‘more or less the same game’ as BOTW is a crime. TOTK is like triple the size it’s just absurd. I haven’t played Spiderman 2.
@@jorgen728 to be fair, I haven't played ToTK. I had tried playing breath of the wild and could not get into it. That said, just because a game is bigger, doesn't mean it's significantly different. The biggest change I see is the whole machine crafting mechanic. But otherwise, it looks completely similar to breath of the wild. Same shrine puzzles, same dungeons with big monsters at the end. Same moblins, same characters.
It's more or less the same game but bigger. That doesn't mean it's bad, but it takes no risks. It's additive, not transformative.
To be fair, I am someone who loved the original BG games but really didn't care for 3 and don't understand what people mean when they say this game revolutionized RPGs. I mean its Divinity 2 but slightly different and with some edgy sex content. That's fine but this is nothing I have not seen before in many CRPGs along the way. I mean I can appreciate it, but its not revolutionary and you could argue it falls into the same fallacy of your argument towards TOTK and Spider Man 2.

Spider-Man is a great game, but I have already finished it. I could keep playing Baldur's gate for the next year and never run out of things to enjoy or discover.
I got my ‘PlayStation report’ a few days ago and apparently I put in 41% of my gaming time this year into BG3. 460 hours in the last 3 months. It’s soooooo good I just want to do run after run after run.
Even gonna rebuy it on pc do I can play with a few other friends without PlayStation. Absolutely worth it.
(Also go try Honour mode! Feels perfect! Difficulty is overhyped, feels like the ‘proper’ way to play, and that’s coming from a guy who got his ass kicked every fight on balance my first run!)
You say this like PC players aren't guilty of the same thing. Many PC players won't hesitate to drill you on the "superiority" of PC gaming and any form of disagreement tends to be met with extreme hostility. I just got a PS5 and am eager to get BG3 but already I'm being belittled by several so-called friends because in their minds PC is the ONLY way to game and consoles shouldn't exist.

@@khaos_slade4676 There's a bit more that goes into determining GOTY than your personal anecdotal dislike of turn based strategy; such as art style, dialogue, writing, voice acting, etc.
Baldurs Gate 3 was quite literally a work of art regarding dialogue, writing, voice acting and so on. Furthermore, the sheer depth of possibility of different paths to take based on your actions is something the gaming community has been screaming about wanting for decades. BG3 finally delivered that to us all. No other game has in recent memory.

Anyone who's played a wide variety of games and understands the general depth of your average video game knew BG3 was going to win.
A game with that level of freedom and player agency is RARE.
In spider man terms, imagine you could kill Mary Jane. Then bring her back from the dead to ask her how she felt about you killing her. Then pick her up and throw her off a building into the green goblin. Then the green goblin has voice acted dialog for specifically that scenario.
That's what playing BG3 is like.

the thing about sony is that they're not rude to hardcore players they just never focus on them they're making casual games and almost all their exclusive is identical they're mostly third person, single player, linear, cinematic cutscenes etc (i played uncharted 4 myself so i know what I'm talking about) uncharted is great it have great story great graphics but this fanboys act it's the best thing ever like xbox game is shit just because they don't have realistic graphics i was talking about games like sunset overdrive, hifi rush and high on life etc at least xbox exclusive tried to be a bit different.

Literally last year. We saw all of this same shit with Elden Ring last year. Other devs crying about how it shouldn’t have been successful and that consumers should expect that kind of quality, and then it won GOTY and everybody cried. History repeats itself.

Besides, I still don't understand the success of a game like ER which offers literally nothing new, innovative or original, the devs have filled a world with mobs and hit them and the only activity to do is the most basic interaction and world possible, a BG3 has a lot more diversity and interest I find, even if it's not my favorite type of game either
@@nawack2774 very much related, you clearly weren’t paying attention in 2022 when devs were coming out of the woodwork trying to bash Elden Ring for its quality because they were afraid of what it meant for expectations going forward. You can still find numerous videos detailing all of the controversy and complaints around Elden Ring.
Also, if you don’t understand Fromsoft’s formula and the changes and experimentation Elden Ring brought to it, that doesn’t make the game bad. It’s a modern masterpiece and far better than most AAA games being pumped out today. All it means is that you really don’t care for that style of game, which is perfectly fine, but again, your personal tastes doesn’t take away from what Elden Ring did and what it accomplished.

Feel like it is moreso that Baldur’s gate 3 is more niche gaming wise as compared to some of the other nominees, it is catered toward more hardcore gamers than casual. Most TH-camrs for instance do not play it at all, and you basically have to willingly go into the media for the game to find stuff about it, aside for the memes about having sex with a bear or something like that or sex speed runs. Which, can make most casual gamers persuaded to not play it, as opposers to say, TOTK which everyone was playing, praising, and was something for casual and hardcore gamers of all ages and demographics.

I know that I have my own personal bubble and biases, but given it won the player's voice award and has sold ~7-20 million copies (more than Spider Man 2 and in the ballpark of TOTK's 19.5 million) and was streamed by CohhCarnage and Moist Critikal and so on and has seemingly not left the gaming news cycle since the bear thing, I'd say you're probably mistaken if you think nobody knew about it or if you think it was somehow inaccessible. It may be true that the CRPG is a 'niche' genre, but Baldur's Gate 3 did a lot of things that modernized and improved on (innovated) the genre, and even people who thought they didn't like this genre are now playing it.

Edit: I was mistaken, TOTK numbers are 19.5 million, so the upper estimates could very well surpass TOTK. I grabbed BOTW's 30 million, which, you know, of course not. Regardless, we don't have exact sales figures, so that's not a given at this point.

I will first say, I do not mean to discredit BG3 for its accomplishments either. It really is a very innovative game and I was enthralled with what it allowed me to do, mostly. Although I'd be a fool to say it impacted the entire of the internet and gaming community as hard as TOTK did, certainly gets close arguably in some regards though. Although the Niche part is for a couple of reasons- the sales is a good argument, but BG3 has been released on Steam AND PS5, while TOTK is just on the Switch. Naturally BG3 will just have more sales since it touches more people. I'd almost argue that it makes TOTK niche for that, but that is moreso not everyone having a Switch to play TOTK, not that it can't or hasn't been enjoyed by a larger amount of people even outside of the physical game itself.
Of course, the actual amount the game sold is a distraction to me from what I really meant by "Niche". I mean the actual aspect of BG3 as a game itself. I mean to put it jokingly, any game known for being memed on for having a bear sex scene (even though it is highly avoidable in normal play) is gonna naturally not attract as huge as a following as TOTK. TOTK is something the busy dad gets to sit down and play just long enough, or that little kid next door can talk about. It is something even for hardcore gamers to dump a ton of hours in or for the casual person to make a korok torture device and be done. Not to mention how influential TOTK was and still is in media. Trust me, I've heard of a crap ton more people talk about TOTK than BG3, with the TOTK community of people being extremely diverse. That is mainly what I mean by niche. The game itself and its contents, and the influence it had on everyone that played it and everyone that knew about it.
Although, I will say, GOTY is an interesting title cause really BG3 100% wins if you don't take into account how influential a "game of the year" is across all forms of media and types of people and simply the game itself. So I guess I could simply just be arguing about what a "game of the year" would even be in my book.
*But who knows!* Maybe I'll look back in a couple years and say BG3 was more worthy of game of the year when I've had time to weigh both of them in my head/life. Honestly, there is nothing wrong with disliking a GOTY or any game for that matter. There's no such thing as a game or a media product that is 100% loved by everyone. However, the BG3 victory has really BROKEN some minds. Even Elden Ring or dare I say, the controversial Last of Us 2 didn't cause as much insanity.
I think it's partly because a large bunch of these gamers are those who only play casual or mainstream games and tend to not be involved in the going ons of the gaming community. So, they really can't believe something that doesn't look like a movie can be considered better than anything they liked. Spider Man 2 fans especially have gone berserk.
Spider Man 2 came too late but lasts too short. Yet I'd replay BG3 all day over and over because it lets me test my own limits.
I’m a huge fan of Nintendo. Been a fan all my life and nothing will change in that regard. I was rooting for TotK to win, but I knew for a fact that BG3 had already knocked all of the nominees out of the park. TotK had its own amazing innovations and was a great sequel to BotW, but with every groundbreaking part it had, BG3 had at least ten more. Both were made with care and ultimately had the players in mind and both brought brand new experiences in their genres, but BG3 deserved to win in order to set the standard for what games should be.
It’s one thing for a well made game from one of the big gaming titans to win; it’s to be expected and people would chalk up its quality as being the result of the famous publisher, meaning there’s an excuse for the bare minimum in other games. However, it’s an even bigger thing for a well made game from a studio that’s not talked about much to sweep the awards entirely and raise the bar for people’s standards. Nobody can use the quality excuse for something like that now and with BG3’s big wins, people are going to wake up and expect the same quality from the more well known studios/publishers. This is *exactly* the push that was needed.
I honestly thought TotK was a really weak sequel to BotW and had some pretty major design blunders, but based on sales figures alone I think there's a strong argument that it deserved GOTY. That said, I expected to like TotK a lot more, but in the end I didn't feel invested in ANY game that came out this year, even acknowledging that there were more good games that probably could have easily taken GOTY on a dull year (TotK and BG3 obviously included) than there were GOTY nominees. (I also haven't played AC6 yet, but maybe I'll feel that spark when I do finally play it.)
Next year is another story: I already know my personal GOTY will be DD2. It would take a miracle for it not to be.
I’m a Zelda fanboy as well as a Spider-Man fanboy, but I played Spider-Man 2 and I am playing BG3 currently, and BG3 absolutely earned that win. TotK was an absolute banger that fixed almost all of the minor disappointments that held back BOTW for me as well as introduced new mechanics that made the game ridiculously enjoyable to play, but BG3 is just the absolute pinnacle of its genre. I’m nearing the end of BG3 and I expect to finish the main quest at around 95-100 hours, which admittedly is 48 hours short of my TotK playthrough, but the replay value of BG3 seems like it’s going to provide me with many more hours of enjoyment in the long run.
Question are you going to go for the platinum in BG3?

I am a PlayStation only player, and BG3 is the best game I have played in the last decade. It deserved the win.
I play it on PS5 with my wife and can't imagine it any other way - it's just a perfect platform for couch co-oping BG3 :)

Spiderman is the kind of game you think is GOTY when your entire gaming collection consists of just various CODs and FIFAs.
I grew with Nintendo, I love The Legend of Zelda, and I still wanted Balder's Gate 3 to win because when it came out western devs and journalists were angry at it just like with Elden Ring a year before. I got a PC to play Elden Ring and now Balder's Gate 3 is in my wishlist.
You know a game is good when it manages to bring in dev salt from other studios. Just like Elden ring did last year.
they just salty because they cant compete with those who put love and care into a game designed for those who love it, i for one am glad it got GOTY, now the real prize for me personally is pikmin 4 getting an award due to the franchise's unluck history it finally got the recognition it deserves.
I have been a hardcore fan of Zelda for most of my life. I still think BG3 deserved to win over totk, as much as I enjoyed totk. BG3 is just better and caused more buzz 🤷♀️
It's really good. A few tips if you've never played a game like BG3 before 1) think outside of the box, 2) if you're in a bad situation check your inventory you might have something that'll turn the tide, 3) there's not really a wrong way to roleplay, and finally 4) relax and have fun! ❤️
Also, don't be too worried if you think your characters aren't well built, there is a mechanic that will let you rebuild them in camp for a little bit of gold.

Bruh, to me the best game ever is Cyberpunk 2077, and i don't even think it deserved that award it got that day, seriously award for ongoing game is kind of pathetic if you think about, it is basically a category for mmos and multiplayer games, and Cyberpunk that is a SINGLE PLAYER game won that prize... it is just embarassing, no wonder CDPR devs just get the award an run away from the stage.
As for Starfield, it beat itself to death, but frankly, i didn't see any Starfield famboy going REEEEEE to the sky like this playstation and Nintendo famboys...

2023 was a pretty fucking great year for gaming.
It really was so many great games released this year. Also kind of sad because it sets sucha high standart that won't be met for a couple of years. Like 2024 doesn't look so great in terms of games, it's probably going to be a year of announcements. Unless Silksong comes out .
I skipped a few games on my list like Hogwarts, Wulong, Lords of the Fallen and Spider-Man. But I got:
Hi-Fi Rush, Atomic Heart, Wild Hearts, Resident Evil 4 (and expansion), Horizon Forbidden West expansion (and Ultra Hard mode!), Tears of the Kingdom, Pikmin 1/2/4, Final Fantasy 16 (and dlc!), Remnant 2 (and dlc!), Armored Core 6 and BG3. Sooooo many great games. BG3 was easily my favorite but I really had fun with all of them.
I think next February/March is gonna be good! For me at least.
Final Fantasy 7, Dragons Dogma 2! Two games I’m INSANELY hyped for. Also I think Hell is Us and Alone in the Dark are slated for February? Probably Elden Ring expansion and next Remnant DLC too.
I would say 2023 was the most chaotic year of gaming that got better as the year went on. There were a ton of stinkers early in the year, with a ton of half cooked games broken at launch.
Instead of getting mad of bg3 winning and nothing else winning let’s be mad at how poorly they treated actual developers who won awards. It a glorified ad reel that cares more about the greed and the business side of the industry instead of the actual people behind the games.
I think so many people were genuinely excited for a bg3's win. Who can really be mad for a company that actually creates games with passion?

In fairness the sales number estimates being thrown around about BG3 are fake. They're massively under-stated. It's actually sold about 4 times the highest estimates most people are throwing around.

@@MarkovChains223 The only official figures are from the Hasbro November Investors Meeting, which were covered in detail by Bloomberg. As of Monday November 13, Hasbro's licensing income from Baldurs Gate 3 was $176 million USD.
There are some significant assumptions around IP licensing fees (generally between 4% and 10% of gross sale revenue) and average unit sale price to get to a number of units sold, but this puts the sales for BG3 somewhere between 25 million and 40 million units as of 13 November. I'd expect it's on the lower end of that range given what we know about Hasbro's past licensing agreements.
Note that's based on sales revenue and not the number of people who have actually played the game

BG3 got game of the year for genuinely being one of the best games we've seen in decades devoid of all that grubby modern gaming BS. As someone who gave up with being a game dev due to the shitty nature of the industry now, BG3 was one of the few games that restores my faith in dev creativity coming before monetisation

Honestly I wouldn't have been mad if Tears of the Kingdom won GOTY, but I've just got to say BG3 is better than it.
The idea that anyone thought a quick shot sequel with way too many combat system gimmicks shoehorned in would beat a revanchist title that flipped the industry standards is insane.

Yes I was a little sad that Zelda didn't win but it's ok, BG3 did great and I respect that, I might try out BG3 for my PS4.

The way some people get so angry and defensive when their game doesn't win goty is so weird. I played Zelda tears of the kingdom and BG3 and personally, I prefer totk and think that it was the best game this year, yet that is just my personal opinion and BG3 is still a phenomenal game that I have really enjoyed. I also kinda knew that BG3 was going to win, and while it's not my first pick (though it would easily be my second) it is definitely deserving of the award. Some people act like BG3 is some terrible game which is just ridiculous, it may not be for everyone but that doesn't make it bad.

PS5 player here. I don't really play RPGs but I loved BG3. The only game I immediately replayed after my first play through.
The last time a Turn based game was the most popular game of a year, awards for games didn't even exist and Lady Diana was still alive.
As somebody who grew up with Nintendo and hasn't played BG3 yet, even I saw that win coming a mile away (and just seeing the endless amount of possibilities and details in this game should have made it obvious to anyone as well).
Still a little sad though that Octopath 2 didn't even get nominated for best soundtrack (because this game would have deserved it more than totk in my eyes, but well it is what it is)

TotK which was basically a massive expansion of BotW
And Baldur's Gate 3, which despite its name is the pinnacle of its genre, that revitalized its genre that was dying in the eyes of the mainstream audiences.

Only time I genuinely was salty about GoTY was when The Last of Us Part 2 won it. It felt like it won it as a game that got popular due to its amount of talking about it from so many hating it.
I agree I believe that year was rigged it was mediocre at best and they disrespected the fans (us). Ghost was by far the best. And the introduction of lethal mode meant the fantasy came to life.

To be fair, at least the TotK fanboys could argue that the game did add a lot of new elements to the previous title. I didn't play it myself but it does look like Nintendo added some really interesting gameplay mechanics and expanded the world both in the sky and underground. So their claims had some basis in reality. Spoder Man however just looks like the same game allover again and relies even more on its name than Zelda.
If BG3 wouldn't have been released I can see TotK win Game of the year easily, but against Baldurs Gate it didn't stand a chance tbh.

The only reason Spiderman 2 was a nomination is because every platform has to be represented at the Game Awards. Sure, it was the best game on Playstation this year, but for GOTY it wasn't really a contender.

I've played all of the nominees except Alan Wake, and Mario. I hadn't really had much time to play bg3 until recently so im still pretty early into it, but i can certainly see why it won, and it's likely one of my favorite games of all time.

Spider-Man in my opinion was one of the weaker entries in the list of nominees. Not really any difference from the first game whatsoever. BG3, TotK, Alan Wake 2 and Resident Evil 4 were all better games. I believe if BG3 didn't come out this year TotK would have won and Spider-Man fans would have still raged. TotK was pretty good especially the ultrahand mechanic which makes the game completely different from the first, unfortunately Spider-Man didn't have any comparable feature. All that being said I'm glad Baldur's Gate 3 won, I'm only 23 hours into the the game and yet it appears I barely scratched the surface. Fun fact, most people completed Spider-Man 2 in less time lol
I sucked hard at Lies of P, it just wasn't for me, but graphically and story, it looked absolutely amazing and had a great universe.
The Tears of the Kingdom thing is that Nintendo showed up with the same pony as last year with a few changes. Nobody wants to admit it, but it's true. I loved BotW, I think it deserved every award, but you can't repackage the same game and expect I won't get bored.
I never had the will to finish totk. I didn't like how everyone forgot Link and act like he's someone new. The whole game was on the same map as botw, but the game acts as if botw never happened. The champions' abilities are near impossible to use in battle due to the phantoms ai pathing. I only used Tulin's power the most, and it sucks compared to Revali's Gale. It was just small little tweaks they could've made to make the game flow better.
Where as BG3 is STILL listening to fan feedback and improving not only the gameplay but the writing/pacing of the story AND bugs in the game. Each update has been massive, and they JUST added 3000 more lines of dialog into the game.
Totk is certainly unique in its ways, but it doesn't hold up to the massive beast that is BG3.

It took me twice as long to just get to the title city of BG3 as it took me to 100% spiderman2. Its such a refreshing change of pace when developers actually respect your money.
Ps5 fanboy here who apparently put in 41% of his gaming time this year in BG3 (in the last 3 months). The game is nuts, I’m addicted. My GotY no doubt. 460 hours so far and I’m like halfway through my fifth run (first on Honour mode… this is how the game should be played!!)
Played all the other contenders besides Mario, they were all great but I thought BG3 wins by a landslide. There’s just so much! But at the same time there’s not enough content lol

It’s actually funny. I originally was completely convinced that TotK was going to win GotY. Then I BG3 came out and I played it. I was completely blown away. Not even mad it won GotY. It was totally earned.
There's a reason why BG3 has almost 200k daily player's on steam alone for half a year to this day it's simply a really good game with a crap ton of content no microtransactions a good price & a crap ton of replayability it's straight up one of the best game's of the last two decades it's that good you don't even have to like rpgs nor turn base to like the game the story & characters alone are really good everyone & there grandmother knew it was going to win.

As someone whose played TOTK, Spider-Man 2, and BG3, the GOTY award was absolutely earned by Baldur's Gate. I'm not even halfway done my first playthrough and I'm like 40 hours in. To put it simply; Baldur's Gate 3 is the Dungeons and Dragons videogame that did it better than the official Dungeons and Dragons videogame.
Spidedman 2 was never going to win GOTY because nobody cares about playing a deaf girl or Mary Jane in a bloody Spiderman game.
The only way it would make sense if there making bets for game of the year for adults to have a meltdown.
As a huge Spider-Man fan myself, I honestly thought the second game was just alright. Baldurs Gate 3 on the other hand was amazing and so damn addicting.

Sony fanboy here. Not a fan of Baldur’s Gate 3, played most of Act 1 but didn’t enjoy it. That being said, totally understand BG3 getting Game of the Year, tons of people love it and there was clearly immense love, passion, and work put into it. BG3’s genre is just not for me. If Spider-Man 2 got Game of the Year I’d have been immensely surprised. Also, totally forgot Octopath 2 came out this year, shame it didn’t get nominated for it’s OST.

I never knew what Baldur's Gate was and I dont like turn based games. I gave BG3 a try after seeing some game play, I fell in love with this game. I played all the games nominated for GOTY and BG3 definitely deserved it.
