hell even DLC. Swen, the boss of Larian, said they aren't even working on post launch expansions and haven't decided yet on if they will. Their current plan is fixing bugs in Act 3, which is needed bc Act 3 is very buggy even with 2 broken quest. But kudos has to be given to not even having expansions on the mind. If they try making games THIS big, yeah. AAA developers need to start making smaller, more focused and higher quality games. Not everything needs to be Elden Ring or Baldurs Gate sized.

What breaks my heart is that all these AAA companies have so many devs that I bet are just as talented and passionate as Larian, but they are at the full mercy of whoever owns them. Larian is what happens when devs who give a damn are independent and free to make the game they want to make.
And that is exactly what happens my friend, it’s not the Dev’s skills, they are all as talented, it’s the greedy fu..s on top of these corporations, starting with EA, Bethesda, and the list goes on.. F’em. Let them close their shop for their incompetence of catering to their consumers.
@@3XZDgg likely just copium, seeing a game like Baldurs Gate be made by devs who aren't being held back by a massive corpo headed by suits pandering to shareholders rather than the consumer. The devs are salty because they'll never be able to make a game even comparable to BG3 for that very reason, so they take their anger out on games that reach these heights.
The funny thing is here, Larian didn't raise any standards, they simply brought them back to where they were before Microtransactions/Battlepasses/live Services ruined the entire industry. Baldurs Gate III is simply a time machine into an era when games were made to be good because thats the only way they made money. Baldurs Gate 3 gives us a look into what gaming would be right now if not for the MTX invasion.
This is clearly a bunch of lies, what do you think you are talking about? Battle passes, yearly season passes, and microtransactions have clearly expanded the ability for players to enjoy the game. No micro transactions, no greed driven live service development. Just an amazingly crafted game made with love of the genre. Hopefully triple A studios will see this as an example for what can truly satisfy their fans while also satisfying the company financially. The Act Man, as always, has an amazing take which I could not agree with more. Whilst I probably don’t plan on playing this particular game, I truly hope that more games can follow in its footsteps and revolutionize the industry.
Thats the issue though, big Devs dont want to make good games, they dont care about satisfying the player base, they only want profit, like every big company across all industry now, profit is everything to them, regardless of cost to reputation, to the economy, or to the environment, they'll just keep plugging away at the direction the adviers tell them will earn the most money for the lowest amount of risk and cost. Id expect smaller companies to do that, not big companies that could ride the storm, that could afford to take riskes, but they dont, money. money. and more money, the world is dying, its harder to live than ever, but screw it, as long as the top dogs are getting big fat checks every year why would it change?

Larian reintroduced the standard of gaming that was constant in the 2000’s, hopefully this a domino effect to make game studios realise this how games are meant to
Their games are always annoying bugfests, which they never end up fixing. Even oens that ruin yuor entire play because choices you made matter fuck all in the end because the bug makes you "uncomplete" shit you actually did do. And let's not talk about the actual gameplay bugs...

We used to feel the exact same way about TES/Arena, before Bethesda started making Ubisoft games, for example
It won't, because game studios don't decide what games they get to make. Publishers and shareholders do, and they will pick a $666m+ earning Diablo 4 over a lower earning Balder's Gate 3 every time. If you want to break the cycle, you need to stop players buying games like Diablo 4 in the first place.
@@asdfbeau Bullshit. Isometric RPG's have become a pretty rare genre, but the ones that are still made are all up there in quality with BG3. Furthermore, and this is the part everyone who argues that BG3 should be the new standard, conveniently misses that Larian is a privately owned studio where the CEO is also the majority share holder. He can do what he wants, its literally his studio. EA, Activision, Microsoft, Ubisoft, they are all publicly owned companies. The CEO's don't have free reign, they have to answer to their shareholders. And while its great that Larian can pursue their directors creative vision and have success, the downside is that as soon as that creative vision isn't as successful for whatever reason, the studio is immediately in financial trouble. In the case of Ubisoft or Activision if this happens the CEO might get booted out and the company has to close a studio but it will survive just fine.
Speaking of expectations...when modern AAA publisher know they are hiring explicitly for diversity without a care about meritocracy, they must squeeze in every bit of monetization possible because they don't *expect* to make a good return. They don't expect diversity to create good products because of historical record. Every now and then a studio comes along that put meritocracy first and like the Act Man said, a quality product will sell.
@@sightseek3rLarian has said that in the most left handed way possible though. Did they not think how this would make everyone else look when they released such a game?! Now Gamers(™) will expect too much from poor indie companies like Blizzard-Activision and Ubisoft!!
They didn't tho, I wish people would actually finish the game before they talked about it... Act 3 is unfinished and a buggy nightmare, it was even worse in terms of bugs and performance than Cyberpunk 2077 was for me. The ending is awful and felt like it was rushed together because they moved the release date it just feels incomplete. And they also advertised content as early as 2 months ago that isn't in the game like the Upper City, you literally never go to the Upper City and they advertised it as fully playable and talked about how amazing it was going to be and it's not in the game at all. There's a ton of other problems too like the progression just stagnating completely in act 3, you can basically gear out in act 1 and never find any real improvements and the game has severe issues with difficulty spiking from being laughably too easy to suddenly difficult. It feels like it wasn't play-tested at all... The game is NOT polished, act 1 is polished, act 2 is sorta polished but very on rails compared to 1 and doesn't have nearly the same level of freedom. And act 3 is just Cyberpunk 2077 levels of broken. Edit: People have datamined it too, there's A LOT of cut content because they rushed the game out before Starfield. There's bosses with coordinates set for the Upper City and dialogue that was meant to play there that was just cut, and a lot of the companions have no content in act 3 probably because it was meant for the Upper city and their storylines for act 3 was cut since that entire section was cut from the game...
BG3 was also in early access for like 3 years. People were paying to basically be testers and it helped fund development. Any game thats been in early access for multiple years should be polished. The standard set is more cultural rather than technical. Larian is owned by a person who primarily views gaming as a source of joy whereas most studios are owned by companies that primarily view gaming as a source of revenue. There is enough talent and resources at EA, Blizzard, Activision, etc., to produce a game at the calibre of BG3. However, their focus is entirely directed at making products designed to reap money off of "consumers". I've seen talks made by business executives trying to break down what "fun" is in a video game and putting it in an economic & psychological context so that a formula can be produced to gauge the risk and reward of a game development project. With that sort of mindset, the standard I expect in video games is the one set by Diablo 4 rather than Baldur's Gate 3.

I think the effort put into BG3 *really* clicked for me when I realized I could damn near lip-read what Gale was saying during a dialogue. Like it wasn't just mouth moving for the sake of moving, but each discrete animation actually matched the motions you would make to form a syllable.
That reminds me of what I've heard about how mouth animations work in Source games. The lips sync up with not just the dialogue but also sync with the language the game is set to.

@@deadwalkin12345 That's extremely laughable, since most of the most difficult games of all time have came out of Japan. I made the same point about BG3 building on D:OS1 and 2. Sooooo much of the core framework was already built and proven successful. Larian was already an award winning studio from its previous games, and they've had a very clear love for BioWare's games like Dragon Age. Licensing the Baldur's Gate IP ensured they would give this game their all.

@@theRobson0908I think the point is that games aren't made by a single person and I'm sure there have been hundreds of developers and artists who worked on EA games that were crushed when they saw the final product. It's exactly why so many of them leave.
The elden ring effect: A game is release where it is complete, made with love and inhuman dedication with 0 microtransactions. To the point where fans are debading what possible catch there is (There isn't any), and other devs are panicking about it.
There's so many conflicting emotions - it's sad that we have to feel so impressed when they just make good games the way they used to without fleecing us, but I really admire the dedication to stand out as a high quality, ethical product. Love when they make that money and embarrass/shame all the abusive companies.
final fantasy XVI is like that too and both fan bases for that and ER are asking for more content to be added. You did something right when your fans wants more content when you havent made/announced any yet. Im sure BG3 will have this as well. make a good game, players will want more of it.
I have an anecdote that really made me realize how much the standard has fallen in the games industry. I was playing Elden Ring one day, looking through all the ashes of war I had, and my roommate happened to pass by and said "Did all of that come in a deluxe edition or something?". He was genuinely surprised when I told him all the weapons, armor, and ashes of war I had were in the base game and none of it was tied to DLC or a deluxe edition.
Larian’s mission statement alone is quite literally the single greatest thing to happen to gaming industry in a long LONG time and that goes for EVERY genre.
@@aguywithalotofopinions412 I can’t remember the last time a company openly denied having micro transactions and just wanted you to buy their game because it’s good. “Games as a service” has created a absolute disaster in the gaming scene. The irony of it all is BG3 just did what companies HAD to do back in the day once a game was out it was done if there was anything seriously wrong you were fucked there was no”buy our game we’ll half ass fix it later but for now here’s a cool new skin 20 bucks please” like where’s our money going? Not back into the fucking game I’ll tell you that.
@@sendthemall44 I can. CD Projekt Red. “We leave greed to others” they said, load of bullshit clearly. Hell, it wasn’t even that long ago that EA tried to sell their “is this good for the player?” pitch. Difference is, Larian actually backed it up with action.
I was absolutely shocked that BG3 is getting such amazing reviews and being played as much as it is. As a ttrpg fan BG and NWN will always hold a place in my heart because i could relate to them just a bit more, but seeing the love BG3 is getting is awesome and so happy that DND is being shown more love.
Honestly same. I knew I would play this game into the dirt but I was not anticipated the avalanche of love. It’s so great to see because Larian absolutely deserves this.
You know what Larian's _big_ secret is (besides having a CEO that's a gamer who actually likes and understands video games)? They're a privately owned company. They don't have to answer to any shareholders or investors who keep demanding more and more revenue regardless of how damaging it'll be to the end product. Valve is also privately owned, and aside from their reluctance to release new games or support their old ones, almost every game they've made has been phenomenal, to put it lightly.
the CEO of value is a absolute G. I got VAC banned for buying a stolen skin in CS:GO and messaged him on Redit and explained the situation and he unbanned my account. Love that man.
When in this case they don't have to hear stupid investors, they can do whatever they want. Maybe the best example no a days its Blizzard, when they started they created gems for the times because they were gamers for gamers... And now they are just a pile of bones that create crap and every week they made more problems than solutions. I'm glad Larian it's receiving all this praise 🎉
What you mean someone that plays video is good at making them? That's crazy I was under the impression finbro's and sales execs made the best video games
A really good view of the whole situation. Every game developed won’t release as good games as Larian, but they should try to release games like Larian did
They can't even try because of how financing a game works. Larian is lucky enough to have built their studio from the ground up as a quality focused studio doing niche games for a passionate player base. So when time came for their big breakthrough with BG3, they still kept a high level of financial independence and did things their own way. The reason this game should not be the standard for the AAA industry is because all AAA studios answer to their owners and investors. And those owners and investors don't know what a good game looks liken they just know what a profitable game looks like. So, as a developer, you are left to battle against incompetent excecs that want to push monetisation where it doesn't belong and releasing unfinished games because they need something to round up the financial year. In short: AAA game production structure is rotten to the core and those studios can't strive to do like Larian because they aren't allowed to as long as the people holding the money don't ask them to do it.

My friend group and I have spent over 100 hours playing Divinity 2 together, and I genuinely feel like this studio goes above and beyond to make the game feel as in depth as possible. There's so many tiny details that make the game feel full of life. I don't want my games to feel like someone sat down for an afternoon, threw a bunch of assets together, then a board meeting was held talking about how to make that map feel even more empty.
If I was an artist that did the minimal work and another artist comes along and does a better job than I do, I wouldn't tell people they shouldn't expect better work because I'm incompetent. They're going to leave my services
Larian studios delivered such a pure and honest product that it quite literally made me realize how much of my life I was wasting with gambling gaming like league of legends, overwatch or other competitive games. Bg3 saved my mental health and now I'm enjoying gaming again!
Wow, I legit thought this was my own comment, cuz that's exactly how I feel LOL. This game and Elden Ring brought me back to my roots enjoying single player experiences rather than enduring stress and frustration in online PvP 24/7
yeah i know people who work at larian and it's an amazing place to work at. Very generous and passionate company that care about their employees and their games. I also tried a while back to work there as a game tester, they gave me divinity original sin 2 to test my knowledge and just, i could keep the game after even if i wasn't taken.
Dude I remember growing up on actual hard disks. The AAA games were just better. You bought a solid product. I remember first placing Soul Reaver into my PS1 with the music, story, gameplay, unique concepts about vampires and lore, and was hooked on gaming. You really bought the full package. Now? When a game studio actually cares, it's considered too high of a ceiling.
If it scares developers, that's a damn good thing! There's been way too much mediocrity (and that's being generous) for years and BG3 has been a serious breath of fresh air! It should be a new standard. Micro transactions are the worst! Spot on video man! Thank you! I'm an old school gamer, (47 yrs old, my first games I played were on the Atari 2600), and BG3 is right at the top of the best games I've ever played and I gotta give serious respect to Larian for what they did here.
You know modern AAA games are going to shit when they can't even deliver a decent linear story whereas Baldur's gate 3 has so many different pathways the story could go and its still better 💀
The beautiful part of this will be that other companies are already facing the fact that we not only love undermining this nickle and dime nonsense, but there will always be a best seller that shows we're not only on to them, but willing to back up quality with our money. Deep and immersive play? Great VO and sound? Insanely accommodating optimization to make it accessible even to folks with sub-optimal rigs (especially with the economy the way it is)? Good product can win, and it's been a long timing coming for a game (and it's success) to champion the point.
It doesn't require the greatest gaming hardware because dropped frames and lag don't kill you. If it stutters, that's just ugly. It's still playable. It's kind of an inherent benefit of using a turn-based system. Of course, the drawback is that you're forced to use a turn-based system which is fine for this game but wouldn't work for a lot of others.
I sugggest y'all to take a deeper look at Larian's story, you'll actually see from how far they come. Couldn't be happier about their well deserved success. It's been a damn long difficult road, but their passion and dedication ultimately overcame the odds !
I just watched a The Divinity Original Sin Gameumentary video today. They were literally as close to going bankrupt and closing up shop as they could possibly be. DOS was funded by a damn Kickstarter lmao
I think what stands out most is, unlike big over-inflated 9,000 employee strong mega-corp developers, Larian has improved over time. They didn't devolve into a bunch of money-grubbing, gamer-hating degenerates.
@@seevee9271 Reminds me of what Digital Extremes went through to release Warframe. They went to dozens of publishers and got turned down by every single one of them, so they were forced to fund development on their own dime and nearly went bankrupt in the process. Ironically, that was probably the best thing that could have happened to them because they're now fully independent and free to do their own thing.
The thing you didn’t mention but I think deserves big credit is the CEO of Larian, Swen Vincke. Unlike most ceos of huge game companies, I feel like he actually plays and cares about the games he releases. Dude forever earned my respect after showing up to a panel in full knight armor
I bought early access when it was first released in 2020. I love how much the company listened to players and always came out with updates on fixing things that were broken. They would message back if you had problems and would help with questions about what you needed in graphics cards or ways to help for better playing experience. I also love that they gave every early access buyer everything the deluxe edition came with. They didn't start with 400 developers. They started off with a lot less and got more and more as people bought early access. The 2.5 million people that bought early access gave them the money to get more people and invested everything into this game. I love that they didn't even think that this game would sell this crazy and get the praise. They deserve this praise and I can't wait in the future for their next game.
You mean the games fan base’s irrationally hating other games to come out right after it and the delusion that super niche autism simulators are going to be the industry norm? Yea your right
It is crazy how games shouldn't be held to this standard apparently yet Baldur's Gate, Elden Ring and Armored Core 6 all just happen to do so... According to the shills and game developers that make shitty products only Larian Studios and FromSoft are the only developers capable of not making garbage.
I think what the these video game designers are truely saying is that they do have the time into making a game like baldurs gate 3. They are on tight deadlines because the company likes their quick buck and they are pressurized to develop it quickly. I have 400 hours into BG3 now and i continue to find things that ive missed and they continue to release expanded storylines that i didnt even know i wanted. Example just yesterday they released more storyline to minthara and now im gonna go and run through the game to get that experience again. Each playthough that i do i realized ive missed out on something. I think that these Designers really need to sit down and refocus why they got into the video industry and what they want to put out. Put more pressure on the developers and their studios on focusing on a game and hearing the designers out for what is truely missing in a game. BG3 was in beta for approxamitly 3 years. They used that time and knowledge to make sure their wasn't major glitches or bugs discovered what the community wanted and heard them out. Most games now Beta only lasts possibly a weekend. Alot of the developers now need to sit down and recommit that passion that designers have and give them time to craft what they want without a insane deadline. Their is plenty of games that come out now that i think is a really cool game and want to purchase Redfall being one of them but the game release comes out and when released it turns into hot garbage. Pre purchasing is a thing of the past for me now because of it cause garbage has become the industry standard. I really hope that BG3 becomes the Final Fantasy of this era.
Man I love The Act Man. He genuinely wants the best for the video game industry - Baldurs Gate 3 represents a forgotten renaissance period of gaming. Lost in time, when developers were out-building one another creating masterpieces.

A great thing about a lot of the best "generic" fantasy IPs is that they are either high enough quality or juuuuuust different enough that you don't really notice their genericness I've come to realize. Also it helps that Baldur's Gate is Dungeons and Dragons and it's one of the early founders of the generic fantasy tropes especially in games lol

I agree with everything Act man said but he misses one thing. The gamers that enable these greedy companies. Its one thing to call out these companies, but as long there are gamers who settle for mediocrity, fall for nostalgia and ignore bad business practices, companies will still keep doing what they are doing.
What's crazy to me is that AAA is SUPPOSED to be the best of the best. Highest in quality, immersion, gameplay, storytelling, you name it. How have we dumbed it down so much as to now create a AAAA branding that devs and companies don't want to adhere to?
My only problem with the game is when I'm progressing through it, I'm already thinking of all the different things I'm gonna do in my next playthrough. There's so much I wanna do it's actually really distracting in the best way possible.
I remember back in my childhood in the late 90's and the early 2000's, where getting the full game without any extra money was just normal. I wish that never changed.
Playing DO1/2 and BG3 inspired me to check out some of their older games, i highly recommend their first game, Divine Divinity to any fans of Diablo 1 and Baldurs gate 1, because Divine Divinity is basically like someone took a CRPG and an APRG and mushed them together, gave it amazing music an a sprinkle of eurojank. BG3 was an Early Access game, and from what I've heard, a lot of the really cringe/creepy stuff like the bear sex scene were added after that period was over. Early Access is pretty much a pre-order but worse since you're taking the role of paid access beta tester.
Love that you covered this. There's so many people saying BG3 is unrealistic. Even if it is, there's certainly a standard that CAN be met in one way or another. It's insane that people think their next game has to be exactly BG3 levels or nothing at all. There's places where devs can meet certain (not all) highs that BG3 gives the player.
@@GamerBoy870 I will say, most of the arguments about unrealistic expectations are not about, you know, just shipping complete games without too many bugs or whatever. I think part of the issue is there are multiple conversations using very similar words happening simultaneously, which makes even people who agree with each other think they're arguing. For example, some people will point out that how expansive and detailed BG3 is is a pretty rare combination of resources, talent, *and* opportunity all coming together, and that saying that should be the "new standard" is a problem, and then someone with something closer to your point of view will object to their stance, not because they think all games should have the details, but more like, should be polished and complete on launch day, and you have the start of a disagreement between two people who might not even disagree about anything.
Diablo is the perfect example of a game that could be like BG3. Not in terms of the game mechanics, but in terms of the quality & business practices and still be a huge success. They have the same if not bigger number of employees, funding, brand recognition, etc.
@@akmal94ibrahim they actually have a lot more employees. BG3 was made by 400 people at its peak (when they started they were like 120). Diablo IV was mad by 9000 people, with the same "advantages" (an established IP, specialized tools, etc.) and it's worse than BG3 by any possible metric. How Blizzard needed so many resources to make a game that a 40 people studio could make in 2-3 years (graphics aside maybe) is a total mystery to me.
@@kenpachi1989 Trying to compare the number of employee is one of the dumbest things that can be done and it will probably not further the conversation in any meaningful way. The reasons why is fairly simple, we can't know how much each employee contributed to the game, many triple A games have thousands people technically working on them, but if you actually break that number into detail you quickly realise that hundred of them are voice actor, another hundred are all the team that just translated the game in different language, hundred of them were their for motion capture and facial scan, another hundred are the various marketing team etc etc. Basically many people just worked barely a few months if not weeks on the project then left once their task was done. This is even further muddied if the company become a revolving door that need to constantly hire new employee because the old one keep quitting because of the working condition All of this make using number of employee that contributed to the project a tricky number to compare, especially when different companies might have different standart to count how many people contributed to the project. Don't get me wrong blizzard absolutely shitted their pants with diablo 4, but don't use the number of employee to say that they used 20 times more ressources to produce an inferior, product,. The real number is probably less than that.

The reason that it's way too good It brings back a lot of people to a time that games were just download and play without a battle pass and micro-transactions. The game is rich in story and lore, It has humour and narration.
There are a ton of $60 games with no battlepass or microtransactions. Why this game is getting so much coverage for that specific factor like it is one of a kind is beyond me.
i understand that but people are acting like companies are forcing you to buy a battlepass. Also there are plenty, i would argue more than people complaints, of games costing 60-70 dollars without there being microtransactions or battle pass. I only care about microtransaction if they effect the game. Assassin Creed is the biggest example: the game is complete, a full game. But yet people complain about the optional microtransaction. People act like you're being force to purchase a color or a skin.
When you actually get to the gates of the city I felt the game just kinda dropped me in the middle of a maze and said good luck, but the more I explored the more I found and unraveled until I found my way to my ending and it just felt amazing. No guides nothing just pure open world exploration hunting down a certain assassin
That's to promote replayability. My first 30 hour playthrough was an evil Drow who ventured the Shadow-Cursed Lands and sided with the Absolute. My 50 hour playthrough which is still currently going on is a High Elf Sorceress. Still on Act 1 and making my way through the Underdark. I'll never buy a Ubisoft or EA product ever again knowing I have the best Roleplaying game for the decade.
And then when you come back again the second time around you discover even more things and places you missed the first time around, which just makes the game even more fun than the first time. I'm still discovering new secrets I completely missed the first and even second times.

RPGs in the 90s were crazy and wild in a such a good way. They had so much content! Then in the 2000s 3D RPG games really took off on consoles like the PlayStation and Xbox. Going from 2D game development to 3D really limited a lot of what devs could do so we were stuck in a hole filled with what the devs could fit in. The 2010s saw devs expanding the hole so much it was literally caving in on them breaking stuff and setting back progress. Maybe the 2020s are going to be where they stabilize and finally progress a bit closer to what some of those 90s 2D RPGs had in terms of content since the realism is already pretty good. I hope what I just typed out made sense lmao.
I don’t think it’s 3D gaming. BG3 isn’t the first amazing 3D RPG to come out. Dragon Age Origins has like a million words and all of it is voice acted and exceptionally well written and that was 2009. Same with The Witcher 3 and a few others
I didn't know anything about Larian prior to watching this. But they have my utmost respect and I hope they stick to their morals and continue making shockwaves in the industry.
as long as Larian studios remains faily independent and NOT bought by corporations (Microsoft was looking into buying acquiring Larian Studios) they will be fine. When independent studios are bought by corporations like E.A., Acitivision, Microsoft etc...we have seen time and time again: - They lose control of their work - They lose ownership of their IPS - Corporate structuring takes place over indenpendence - Games are made for SHAREHOLDERS, not consumers i.e. gamers - Most of the earnings eventually go to the corporate publishers and their shareholders The studios eventually become empty husks of their former selves.
SO happy for Larian Studios. I never thought we'd see a BG3. Not after Black Isle and Bioware closed or were bought out. I say this as a hardcore BG/BG2/IWD Fanatic.

Why would we possibly go back to that primitive way to making all the money possible?

Can't believe we've gone from publishers praising top releases like these and striving to be as good as them to "adjusting expectations"

They don't expect diversity to create good products because of historical record. It feels like it wasn't play-tested at all...
The game is NOT polished, act 1 is polished, act 2 is sorta polished but very on rails compared to 1 and doesn't have nearly the same level of freedom.
And act 3 is just Cyberpunk 2077 levels of broken.

There's bosses with coordinates set for the Upper City and dialogue that was meant to play there that was just cut, and a lot of the companions have no content in act 3 probably because it was meant for the Upper city and their storylines for act 3 was cut since that entire section was cut from the game...

I heard of Baldurs Gate before this game came out, but I didn't give a fk until now lol.... The devs knew what they were doing, and they knew people would respond positively to this type of "unprecedented" releasee in 2023. I haven't played this game or a Baldurs Gate game, but I'm already a HUGE fan of this development studio. Bravo.
Then why dont u marry them kid?
I think the effort put into BG3 *really* clicked for me when I realized I could damn near lip-read what Gale was saying during a dialogue. Like it wasn't just mouth moving for the sake of moving, but each discrete animation actually matched the motions you would make to form a syllable.
That reminds me of what I've heard about how mouth animations work in Source games. The lips sync up with not just the dialogue but also sync with the language the game is set to.
We saw similar reactions to Elden Ring. You're absolutely right. We should be celebrating landmark titles like Baldur's Gate because it improves the industry.
Dude, the english devs were going hard against the Elden Ring devs.. like I still can't believe one went as far to say "the UI is so minimalistic because the Japanese cant handle so much information at once 🤪"
Like they were NOT all too subtle with the racism either.
@@deadwalkin12345 That's extremely laughable, since most of the most difficult games of all time have came out of Japan. Basically nothing the US has made is as hard as games like any given mainline Touhou game. I bounced off of a Touhou fan RPG because it was *way* more complicated than all the Baby's First X games that western devs have been making for nearly 20 years now. If any UI in a western AAA game is complicated it's because the devs just didn't know what they were doing or couldn't afford any extra passes to make it more intuitive or workable.
@@deadwalkin12345 Yep, the same people that cry about racism everywhere had no problem being racist as hell towards their Japanese superior's at From Soft. The iron-clad law of woke projection: they call everyone else racist because THEY are racists, and they genuinely believe they're the only one's that have read "Rules for Radicals". Everybody knows what they're doing, and they think they're being covert. It's just hilarious to me, lol
@@deadwalkin12345 I think I would vomit if Western AAA devs got to make the UI. Elden Ring's map would look like a fucking Ubisoft game before you've even explored an inch of it, and you'd have a shopping list for every sidequest because you CANNOT be allowed to miss anything! God forbid we leave a hint of mystery and a sense of accomplishment in exploration for the player.
@@deadwalkin12345What's even funnier is that the worst that came from Elden Ring was just wonky performance, that's it. I don't know about anyone here, but I'd prefer to play a feature-complete game with a locked 60fps over a trash game with *even worse* performance and microtransactions lol

Larian studios deserve every bit of praise they get, and they care for their fans base. I experienced a game breaking bug at the start of the final section, couldn't continue.

Best thing about the studio is how involved the actual boss of the company is and the passion he shares with his employees.

Deep and immersive play? Great VO and sound? Insanely accommodating optimization to make it accessible even to folks with sub-optimal rigs (especially with the economy the way it is)?
Good product can win, and it's been a long timing coming for a game (and it's success) to champion the point.
Larian still releases huge patches that fix bugs, optimize the game further and add new dialogue and things to do.
@@seevee9271 Reminds me of what Digital Extremes went through to release Warframe. who knew that having a "gamer" leading a game dev team (instead of a marketer) could lead to good results, crazy.
I'm reminded of a similar outcry happening with Elden Ring back when it released. Glad to see Baldur's Gate 3 is walking the same path.

This is even further muddied if the company become a revolving door that need to constantly hire new employee because the old one keep quitting because of the working condition
All of this make using number of employee that contributed to the project a tricky number to compare, especially when different companies might have different standart to count how many people contributed to the project.
Don't get me wrong blizzard absolutely shitted their pants with diablo 4, but don't use the number of employee to say that they used 20 times more ressources to produce an inferior, product,. The real number is probably less than that.
This all goes to show how far we've fallen, and thank God for Larian showing up to be the light in the dark for all of us regardless of whether or not you're going to play it.
I hope to God the competition *does better*.
It's so true. Standards in gaming have plummeted to nothing. It's almost like normal to have a broken game when it releases.
Not almost
BG3 was so good, that Larian could literally use the same engine, graphics and mechanics but with new levels/campaigns and I would fucking buy them.
Majora's Mask did a very very similar thing, and i think it proves that point pretty well
Baldur's gate 3 is so good, it even hypnotizes IGN to create a good video on it. The sheer goodness of BG 3 made IGN came back to their senses.
They just hired a good journalist by accident, the guy deserves a raise
Don't worry - it won't last. Tomorrow's headline will be somehow linking BG3 with the "far right" or something.
Huh? IGN talked about some nobodies on twitter? How is that a good video exactly?
@@Aethelhald lmao so true
@@nightfears3005 They're not exactly nobody they're game developers from other companies, and some of them are form AAA companies that have the resources to create good games like BG3 but never tried to put in the effort.
Well said, "competition drives excellence". You should strive to be better than your competition. A lot of these companies feel as if they have no competition because they have a solid fan base that they lean on from the past. The only way to help change this is to "vote with your money" and raise your standards. Or else it will just keep getting worse I guarantee it. Love the videos Dark Urges Man!
It’s awesome that we had games like Battlebit and Baldurs Gate 3 come out in the same summer. Two underdogs that are shaking up the AAA industry
this also applies to Owlcat studio with their Pathfinder games.
Those are _amazing_ tabletop to PC conversions.
Both games are amazing and they are HUGE. the 1st game has 6 tomes of pathfinder in it, it takes about 200 hours if you explore everything.
the 2nd one elevates with Mythic paths for level ups and is even bigger.
If you miss the times of Vampire The Masquarade Bloodlines, Arcanum, Planescape: Torment and Baldur's Gate 1/2 you should play those.
Hearing about BG3, this situation reminds me of what people are saying about Battlebit Remastered: A game made by a smaller studio (except Battlebit was made by
The reason that it's way too good
It brings back a lot of people to a time that games were just download and play without a battle pass and micro-transactions. The game is rich in story and lore, It has humour and narration.
Games haven't been like this since the "insert disk and play" days, you mean 😂
@@robertroughley1923 Right?!?
There are a ton of $60 games with no battlepass or microtransactions. Why this game is getting so much coverage for that specific factor like it is one of a kind is beyond me.
@@precisemotion Yee, There indeed are, I think people just love it so much because there's just so much freedom and how simple it is
i understand that but people are acting like companies are forcing you to buy a battlepass.
Sounds like Baldurs Gate 1, awesome
@santosic yeah I'm currently playing my dark urge play through and I'm realizing how much I really missed in act 2 170 hrs total still finding stuff
Now here we have a studio untainted by greed, we thought they were extinct, but it seems that we have found what could be the last of it's kind.
As someone who was a blizzard game lover for a LONG time and seeing all their games just become slot machines, Baldurs Gate was such a breath of fresh air, and Ive NEVER played DnD before either. I dumped about 27 hrs in just like 5 or so days (which is a lot to me) and continue to dump more time. Its so fucking good. Seeing the other game companies cry about how baldurs gate is doing or that they arent conforming to the predatory bullshit is honestly eye opening. I'm so happy about it lol 😆 gonna be playing this game for a LONG, LONG time. Ive hung up pretty much every other game besides FFXIV and Baldurs Gate lol
Did you play Elden Ring? If so, is it as good as Elden Ring? I know it's not exactly the same because BG3 is turn-based.
@@Adam-ub9nu They're completely uncomparable. Liking Elden Ring doesn't mean you'll necessarily like BG3, that's a really weird comparison (I've finished both).
I do remember a time when the Diablo series was seen as awesome and refreshing. After Diablo 2, it went downhill.
So.. what I understand from that comment is.. that you're completely new to DnD games and probably turn based ? If so, how hard or challenging does it feels for you ?

"This industry deserves a better class of developer, and I'm gonna give it to them." - Larian Studios
When independent studios are bought by corporations like E.A., Acitivision, Microsoft etc...we have seen time and time again:
- They lose control of their work
- They lose ownership of their IPS
- Corporate structuring takes place over indenpendence
- Games are made for SHAREHOLDERS, not consumers i.e. gamers
- Most of the earnings eventually go to the corporate publishers and their shareholders
The studios eventually become empty husks of their former selves.
Damn. You need to pay the divinity original sin games
