    I'm just now getting into Battletech, and know nothing about the the lore. So I've been listening to videos like these to try and figure out which faction I'd like to play. I think I've settled on the Circinus Federation. I like the idea of being pirates and fighting for themselves rather than some noble cause.
    As Henry Hill said in 'Goodfellas': “For us, to live any other way was nuts. To us, those goody-good people who worked shitty jobs for bum paychecks and took the subway to work every day, worried about their bills, were dead. I mean, they were suckers. They had no balls. If we wanted something, we just took it. If anyone complained twice they got hit so bad, believe me, they never complained again.”

    Rewatching while im bored in a waiting room. Macintire was a poor military leader no doubt, and a dictator(but thats not unusual in battletech)
    but his diplomatic accomplishments are noteworthy. If he had delegated military command to a trusted ally, he couldve been a great leader for the federation, mayhaps even transitioned them into a proper state. Its quite impressive he mollified 2 successor houses, and got promises they wouldnt crush him like a bug, all for returning prisoners! and, he didnt even have to admit responsibility. (Thank you for all the work you put into this video, it was great!)
    I’ve gotta say there is a certain twisted joy in being able to watch bad guys fighting other bad guys, knowing whoever won the galaxy will smell a little bit better. That’s a feeling I had from the very beginning to the very end of this history, they were the perfect example of a bandit kingdom that the inner sphere always accuses the periphery states of being and the fact that they were founded by former SLDF soldiers loyal to Kerensky is just so fucking ironic. I wonder how many of our other little bandit kingdoms and pirate states can be traced back to inner sphere types causing hell in the periphery. Okay, that was a bit unfair, we produce enough of our own trash and no point in denying it. Still the irony.
    In the end the black warriors and the people of Cerrinus made their bed and they had to lie in it. All I can say is that I feel pity for the slaves, serfs, and innocents that died from the raids, the wars, and finally the bombs. Hopefully someone, hell even one of the great houses clears out the shattered mess of the old federation before it becomes another haven for piracy on a large scale.

      I feel some empathy for the non-pirates on the planet. And it's kind of scary to see it's not even on the newer maps. How many other formerly settled planets are in the Inner Sphere that were scoured from records?

      @@MechanicalFrog Yeap yeap, it’s terrifying to think of how many once populous systems throughout the inner sphere and the periphery used to be on the maps but now arnt because those worlds are dead. Hello Frog.
    I hate to mention this, but the Circinus Federation is pronounced as 'Sir-Sin-us'. MUCH easier to say than your pronunciation.
    Oriente is said as: 'Ore-E-en-tay'.
    The Circinus Federation is a rare example of FASA, or some other company that held the copyrights to Battletech, destroying a 'faction' outright. There is little hope of ever seeing another government in the area, since both Marik and Steiner both keep a wary eye on the area, and are more than willing to stomp out any 'pirate kingdom' that should establish itself, or attempt to do so.
    There are only a handful of such instances in the entire 'history' of the Battletech universe. Where some 'faction' has been so damaged, or destroyed, to the point that it is highly unlikely to ever be re-established in the future.
    The entirety of the Word of Blake is such an instance, and an example. As is The Society, in the Clans, or as I often refer to it... the Khanate.

    • @MechanicalFrog
      @MechanicalFrog  ปีที่แล้ว

      We discussed the pronunciation of Circinus in the discord channel and the only official source I had for it is the audio book from the Eridani Light Horse which just came out which used the hard K in the middle.
      Circus, Circumstance, Circumference, etc. I understand there is a star which is pronounced as you describe, but it's not the same star.
      I decided to go with the closest thing to an official source and the prevailing opinion in the channel.

      @@MechanicalFrog : Well, where I sit in America, those words: Circus, Circumstance, Circumference, all are spoken with the first three letters sounding like 'Sir', Sir, not Sear, or any other slurring of the phoneme. So Circinus would be Sir Sin Us. I guess, where you come from, words are spoken with some other 'accent'. I just pointed out the American way of saying the name. No other 'slur' was meant, or implied. And even though you 'mispronounce' words to my ear, I will still be auditing your series because it is captivating, well written, and has interesting characters, as well as interesting events. All happening at the edges of 'civilized' space. As said before... Keep writing... and I'll keep listening to each 'chapter'.

      @@richmcgee434 In classical Latin, a c is pronounced as a hard K sound. Only later did it devolve into a softer c and ch sound during the Renaissance, which you will see in Italian. It is entirely reasonable to make the call that a society obsessed with recreating the Roman Empire would go with the hard K sound.
      I understand that because you are on the Internet you think that there aren't human beings on the other end of your unhinged and rude rantings. However, there are. I hope you have a long and rewarding life and that I never have to interact with you ever again. God bless.

      The original Circinus would be pronounced with a hard c, only later bastardized by a French influence.
      Plus, the only official audio I have heard that mentions the Circinus Federation used the hard c.
      If I'm wrong, I welcome an official CGL rep's response.

      Oh, I see, you're referencing the actual constellation, perhaps? (bah, facts). Circuit also fits in there as well, I suppose. I myself have always looked at that in-game system name as being more of an attribution to Circe, the dual nature of pastoral agri-worlds hiding the Black Warriors predatory agendas and all. And, hey, since the whole world naturally revolves around me...
      According to Google Translate (which is ALWAYS so accurate), it seems like the original-original pronunciation in Latin would be a hard "ch" in both letter placements. Kinda like "chyr-CHEEN-ohs", maybe?? But, since Circinus was discovered by a french dude, I'd opine there perhaps wasn't later bastardization as outright mangling from the get go. The French after all, are the one set of us colonizers that would get uptight over specific pronunciations.
      I'd love to see if there was ever anything that FASA ever put out on the subject way back in the day. Google Translate helps me figure it out sometimes, but my own 'Merican English sensibilities can take me on random tangents like this.

    MF: Been generally enjoying your stuff, but the mispronunciations are triggering me.
    'Hegemony' is pronounced with a soft 'g' and emphasis on the second syllable: Heh-JEH-men-ee. 'Ethereal' also has emphasis on the second syllable: Eh-THEE-ree-al. While I don't know the official pronunciation of 'Circinus', I would think it would be with both 'c's soft: SUR-seen-us or Sur-SEEN-us.

    • @MechanicalFrog
      @MechanicalFrog  ปีที่แล้ว

      We may be running into some regional differences in pronunciation. As far as the Circinus goes, we discussed it in the discord channel and decided it most likely fit with other words like circus in English with the hard K sound. It's also used with a hard K sound in the Eridani Light Horse audio book that was recently released. I'm sorry if the way I pronounce words is bothering you but realistically, it's unlikely that I will change much at this point in my life. The concrete is set as far as words like hegemony.
