Archers giving up the sport

  • A customer walks into my store wanting to sell her archery equipment. It is a full Olympic setup. I question the lady why she is wanting to sell her gear and why?
I discuss joining clubs - issues you may face and issues I have faced and options for you to still enjoy archery if you have a person at a club you don't like.

That happens even in the states. I belong to a club for almost 40 years, I was so happy and proud when my 15 year old daughter said I would like to shoot archery with you. Being a proud dad I went out with her and got her the best compound bow at the time money could buy. I took her to my club and sat through all the safety classes and rules and conduct classes because she didn’t know anyone. We finally started shooting Monday night’s she was told that Mondays where full she would need to shoot Wednesday so we switched and started shooting for about six weeks and NOT one person in that club would even say hi to her or when she had a great round no one would say great job. I would hear them compliment each other but never her. Now mind you my daughter would shoot rifle’s and handgun shoots and the other ladies would always tell her great shooting or something. I couldn’t believe that guy archery shooters could be so hurt full to a kid. Needles to say I turned my membership card in and said I don’t want to belong to a club that treats people this way. Now we drive a 1 1/2 hours to shoot and have a great time and people are a hell of a lot nicer.

@@5jjt believe me I told her that unfortunately you had to see the bad side of people, that believe archery is a man’s sport. I also told her keep practicing with me because I have seen half of those people shoot and you can beat them. I said when they have a shoot again let’s go down and let them see what they turned away. Every time I see her pick up her bow it brings a smile to my face.

It's the same in the UK. You find that niche sports are attended by a certain type of individual. They look the same, talk the same and by and large act the same as each other. The biggest crime at least in their eyes, is that you turn up, youre an ' outsider ' and you can shoot much better than they can

@@capricornmagic63 very true.... I'm just waiting to get into my local club (yep its been around since 1AD it seems) my only fear is its full of such folk.... previous clubs have been good to-ok,,, I'm more annoyed at clubs not promoting & not making the sport more fun ie club, local, regional competitions... maybe this will change.

I had a guy at the local archery club - he was the top recurve shooter without probably knowing it. I said to him you are shooting really well. He said to me you know your the only person to mention it to me. He said your staff are the only people who enquire how Im going. I thought weird - dont you just ask? He brought in 6 bottles of wine.
I would say he was shooting every day and shooting really well. He is working a lot more now.
I would say you get more introverted people in archery, so alot of people are quiet and focused on themselves. But how good is it that you shoot with your daughter. I hope you both continue shooting I love seeing families shooting together spending time together.

My perspective on this is that archery is a sport that is difficult to practice at home, and so clubs are needed for access to targets, and for being able to shoot at least 20m. When I visited a local club to see if they were worth joining, their questions of me had nothing at all to do with my ability to shoot (I was the state champion 2 years running at that point). They wanted to know whether I was associated with a local business person, and they stated they only deal with a specific dealer of one brand of bow. When I told them who I purchased my archery gear through, their response was they prefer not to deal with people who purchase from that shop. I didn't end out joining their club. My point is, I would love to be able to shoot more often (I run two businesses so am extremely time poor) however access to local clubs is limited, and the attitude by some club owners is somewhat discriminatory at best. Is it any wonder people don't shoot more often? I would rather not shoot, than be associated with people who allow membership based on where you buy your archery gear.

Brilliant video Steve! A great perspective. We have to make sure that we are welcoming to all, relaxed, offer archers what they both want and need, and above all, make sure it is fun. That is how you sustain a passion. And thank you for your very lovely words about GSA. We hope we can sustain this positive, relaxed and welcoming culture for years to come! Steven, you don’t know me, we never met. But your video’s reach the modern world all over. I can relate to what you are talking about here personally. I used to be very involved in clubs, range safety officer and competitor in multiple disciplines in the firearm world. I stepped away. Rubbed a few too many or maybe just the wrong ones? While I left that behind somewhat, your videos and reviews have really helped me in this sport. I love friendly competition at 3D events and shoot a lot of open to the public events all over. I spent my very limited funds at the time on my first target bow a lightly used PSE Shootdown and it went from there. And even that, getting a Shootdown was partly because of you. You did such a great review of it I just had to have one. I knew I would like it without a question and I did. Definitely why I now have two Full Throttle bows. Here in Wisconsin people all over might chime in during a conversation with my 3D partner, did you see Steven Hann’s video? Or guys Like Dudley for example. You’re known all over in a positive way. And yeah people leave. But guys like you make this sport grow. Thanks for all you do.

It didn't take long for me to find out there'll always be clubs with issues or that have a lot of drama surrounding them. My buddy who finally encouraged me to pick up a bow has been at the sport for almost 3 decades and he recommended a club that's 1 hour away from home in the evening traffic. He later told me he urged me to join that particular club because after almost 30 decades of archery he knows a lot of people at high state and national levels, with stakes in certain clubs, and unfortunately not all of them are about promoting the sport of archery but are in it in some way or another to get something for themselves, and they aren't beyond playing petty power games to give the people they like access to opportunities that would take others much more effort to achieve. He knows the owners of this particular club I go to and vouched for them and after 1 year I am very thankful. Everyone is about getting better at the sport and being welcoming and there's a good balance of men and women, boys and girls shooting there.

Iv been a aba and ifaa shooter for 20 years and have never had a issue with any of the members. But I have attempted to branch out to AA over the years because I like shooting dots and every time iv gone to a aa club iv been made feel like I'm a 2 headed freak. The people who do the sport are the biggest down fall. Iv shot internationally and always have a truly welcoming attitude from the clubs iv attended.
How can we expect archery to grow in Australia when people are giving up the sport who have it ingrained in them for so long.

I think sometimes it just takes time. It took time for me when I was in Canberra to fit in. It took time here for me to fit in. I employ 16 local archers. One goes to uni - a kid in his class does archery, knowing he works for me and has worked for me for 4 years he says I would never go in there. That kid has never met me, he has never been in the shop, he does not shoot anymore. But he had strong views on me and my staff and had never met any of us.
If he had shot with me and he had the intelligence to be nice to his fellow student then his life would be much easier. You have more impact been nice to people than been been rude.
But like I said most people are nice and even the ones with an attitude will probably be fine with time. I have been doing archery 40 years now and I dont think anyone has had a problem with me. But sometimes it takes time.

Nice video, and interesting topic. Traditionally I leave a club if I am moving somewhere else. But where I live now, I've lived for 21 years. And at first I was in the nearest club, because that was natural. Eventually I was also member of the "Board of Directors" (not sure of the correct English term). Just a side position. But anyways at some time some of us thought that we would help out with regards to a 3D competition the club wanted to host and we gathered info about the available 3D targets, their condition etc. But then we were told that we should not interfere. Around that time the club was also turning focus towards being an elite archery club etc., so a few other things was already a bit strange. But with above, my cup was full, so I left and joined the 2nd nearest club (appr. 18 km away the first was like 4-5 km away) - so still ok. I have been in the new club appr. 6 years. And yes, it really takes time to fit in, get some new friends etc. I decided that I would not involve myself in the management of the club, but if they need help with something practical, ok I can help and do help from time time. The last 2-3 years at the yearly meeting they have asked me to join, but I refused, because I don't feel like it. I don't know about next year, maybe. I just want to come to practice and - practice, socialize a little - and practice. But all in all, it's ok. I have from time to time thought about returning to the archery club in my city, because maybe it is no longer the same people, I had a "clash" with etc. But I don't know - maybe not. Maybe it would feel strange to return to an old club. Plus most of them shoot recurve, not many of them shoot 3D etc. So maybe I just stay where I am. I have been into archery for appr. 36 years. 🙂

very true...I've not experienced any issues within a club, however I am getting back into archery after a few years out due to family etc anyway now I've to wait for a space in any local club as yes there all full... I've already done my basic course back in 1993 & unfortunately I've no paperwork to prove such so it does mean I've to do it all again...
baring in mind I've a old Browning compound bow & I've just purchased a 21 Citation 40" currently happily practicing out to 20M in my garden & then further upgrading my sights & general equipment "I'm just itching like mad to extend my range shooting" my only concern is in some clubs (now gone) it was literally join, prove experience etc & then shoot at a target... there wasn't any form of club competition or promoting any local/regional & further competitions (my original club yes & happily I won gold... "Yay!" anyway ppl shouldn't be put off via other ppls attitudes enjoy the sport, meet good ppl & just have fun is my view (along with many others) ppl cause you issues, report it, leave them be & simply ignore what they try to do... my local clubs just need to promote archery & shooting as general more rather then treating it like your doing something wrong...
the lass selling her bow/equipment she should've taken your advice & just carry-on/move to a new club etc

Without a welcoming group of members willing to welcome and mentor new archers the cost of entry is crazy too. JOAD is an awesome program and by its very nature is encouraging to new archers. Adult archery exploration courses are a very good recruiting tool if you have people willing to support the newbies.
When I start coaching new archers I tell them that my goal is to get them so hooked on archery that they will never be able to afford drugs (and maybe even food and shelter.) ;)

Many reasons for this. Lack of grass roots infrastuctures in my case. i am an archery coach and 5 time national champion. Been a while since i shot. Would love to but lack of shooting facilities is an issue. We rely on schools and sports halls for indoor and at their mercy and only one night a week, when you miss due to family or work commitments it is another week before you might get the chance again. When I was in my period of winning titles I had a different local club facility 7 days a week to use, and my practicing paid off, but now it is down to one day due to clubs shutting down and insurance hikes or schools needing the halls for other things. In one place the slot was lost to give way to a knitting group...Storage of butts and equipment is a huge issue as these places are all for letting archery be done until we ask for some storage. Archery is not a priority sport in most countries and they would rather plow money into Athletics and fail than put money into archery and succeed. I have seen Olympic standard and world ranked recurve archers leaving the sport due to the lack of support, funding and facilities.

The people in the club are nasty, put others down (not me ) Don't obey the club rules, ie the rules don't apply to them, some turn up when all the targets are out.

It’s a shame a lot of clubs are like that.
I’m a relative newbie, primarily doing 3d rounds and barebow, and I’m part of 2 clubs, the more established club definitely has its clicks within it.
But I go with a mate and we just go there to hang out.
The other club is barely a year old so the facilities and course aren’t as good, but the people are much friendlier.
Don’t get me wrong both clubs are great and the people are friendly enough. Especially as an outsider who’s only attended a few comps.
I’ve been away from the bow for a couple months now as I’ve had other responsibilities that have taken priority but now I’m out of that rushed phase I hope to start attending events again in the next couple weeks.

I used to shoot 3D tournaments quite a bit about 25 years ago. I did fairly well in the traditional class. Even then, there were folks who looked down on traditional bow shooters claiming they just wounded animals etc. Going into a pro shop was always dicey as once again, owners and patrons would belittle your choices. (One shop ordered me some Zwicky Eskimo broadheads and charged me an arm and a leg for them, but nothing like them was for sale in the shop). I mentioned I liked a heavy arrow and was immediately chastised for making a foolish choice by a local "expert". It's fine to have an opinion but being narrow minded and somewhat ignorant of the history of archery does not bode well for a pro shop.

Wow, exactly same type issues and experience when first doing my beginners course and joining the club here in NZ. So much politics with a core group who wanted to exert control over everyone. Interesting too you talk about people on the waiting list to for a beginners course, we've always had a backlog of about 100 for the past 2 years. But problem is you can't take on too many due to physical range space and target limitations. There seems to be a sweet spot of around 80 members for our club. I think this is a problem for the sport overall lack of physical space, and probably why the sport will never grow to a large size. Shame because NZ Archery are trying to grow the sport, but how is that even possible. clubs would need to double in size and most just don't have the physical grounds for it. It's an interesting challenge to try and solve.

I shoot indoor state and national but don't even have a indoor club around to practice in that has indoor facilities. I belong to two clubs in the state and when traveling join one in Kentucky that is awesome and so well equipped! You find in your area that only about 6-10 members do all the work? I'm ready to give up archery because in the 2.5 years of owning and shooting a compound and a recurve i still didnt learn how to shoot, i mean i shoot so bad with the recurve that from 27 meters away i miss the 1m x 1m backstop completely and ruin all my arrows. With the compound i started going to a small local tournament and i am always dead last there, its a 3D course with 24 targets two shots each and i get 240-280 score every time. Initially i started archery because i wanted to hunt, now almost 3 years down the line i was on a hunt only once, and i took a crossbow because i wasnt sure i would be able to hit vitals at 20 yards, even though i shoot absolutely awfull with a crossbow too, but with a crossbow i'm very likely to hit vitals at 20 yards (the distance to the feeder is less than that where i intend to hunt). So i'm thinking of selling my bows and only keeping the crossbow as i just cant hit anything with my bows.

There were over 17 THOUSAND archers competing in ASA events. Due to the horrible economy with motel, food and exorbitant fuel costs thousands were NOT able to attend the multiple events. I have visited archery clubs in UK and they're all the same, full of archery snobs who only have one way of shooting. They look down their noses at other styles. The last club I tried to join on my first visit I was challenged to a shoot off with the head geyser. He told the archers there that everything I was doing was wrong, so I beat him firstly on six arrows at 25 meters. I finished all my arrows before he shot 3, and doubled his score after six arrows. He even demanded a recount. I beat him again and again, but still everything I was doing was wrong.
I shoot everyday either at home, on a farmer's land or up in the woods. I build my own bows from fibre glass rods and have built several different styles, both short pull and long pull. This was also frowned upon and was told that I wasn't allowed to use my own bows but would have to buy one. It's all run by little Hitler's with tiny cocks who are not that great at shooting but can lord it over their beta accolites in a tiny pond. To mix metaphors.
I prefer to either shoot alone or with a few mates trying new stuff all the time.

I usually just shoot alone (or with my grandson if I'm lucky) but would occasionally go and shoot a 3D course set up by one of the local clubs. I've always felt welcomed and only run into 1 guy that couldn't accept the scores he actually shot and would fudge his score card. Even he was still friendly. I don't understand that mentality, especially when it's just a little 15-30 archer shoot. I guess he weighs himself with one foot on the floor so he can weigh what he wants also. As far as the people that cause problems, they usually are the same type of bossy personalities that like to be "in charge" and make sure "you" follow all the rules. For me, it is easier just to shoot on my own, on my schedule, at my place, with my rules. 😁😁

I gave up the sport for a few years as well. It took a friend of mine who was a former Olympian to actually encouraged me to try to get back into it again. But I had had a really horrible experience in competition where it just wasn’t good. People were not at a fine and they really, laughed at your mistakes. I’m in a much better place mentally but also in terms of a club sport. My personal opinion, don’t put that equipment up for sale, just took it away in a safe for a few months and see if she comes back for it.

the difference in clubs is pretty crazy, I'm in Canada and its completely different then what you're describing, its probably 2 or 3 acres of property in a forrest with trails cut out throughout and lanes off the main trail for shooting, the place is open 24/7 you can shoot at midnight if you want, its much more of a relaxed situation, maybe a tournament once or twice a year but its mostly just show up and shoot, hang out for a bit and talk about archery stuff. and that's pretty much the common setup around here. The way it sounds for you is almost like a karate class or something, very scripted, lots of rules and almost robotic, and it almost sounds like you guys compete against other clubs.

    • @Steve-ei2vh
      @Steve-ei2vh ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Jake, Australia is about as big in physical size as USA so there are lots of clubs through out Australia. and all of them are often different. The inner City ones have more rules because the ovals are often shared so we have restrictions on times but most clubs within those times you arrive and pull out a target. put up flags and shoot to your hearts desire. In outer City clubs there are some ranges you can shoot 24 hours a day if you choose as long as you are a member of that club or a member of Archery Australia and with a member of the club I suppose the bottom line is that if you just want to do your own thing and shoot with minimal interaction you can. But if you want interaction with members and I think most people do, then as in every club in the world in every sport you will find some friction. Its the unfortunate result of putting varies personalities together in the same place. Eventually most people find their place and mesh together.......

@@chrisgorman1652 not sure but doing the online courses and speaking with Sports Integrity Australia (SIA) previously ASADA at one of my other events, they said there may be issues with other archers on the line, 2 of whom regular travel Australia competing and have been to World Cups and Vegas etc that my presence and me being in possession of a banned substance near them may cause them issues with integrity and anti doping.
I was for one year on the high developments coaching program in my home state and doing QREs.
SIA said the best would be not to be associated with this people in person. They weren’t able to provide me with a very clear answer. Because even they said unless I test positive I’m not a banned person, but because I applied for sn exemption in another sport they’re aware of what medications I take. These members were at my club, probably the most welcoming club and most enjoyable to shoot at, have been tested before put me in a morale dilemma of would my presence at the club and shooting line and having prohibited medication for archery in my possession potentially put their integrity in the firing line. They are at risk of being around me potentially and it’s hard to get a clear answer other than the best course is not to be near them. I’m hoping with a medical procedure that is waiting approval I’ll be able to stop that prohibited in and out of comp medication and get back to shooting again.
I love archery and my other sports. It just creates a big dilemma. If I wasn’t in the testing pool for one of my other sports and having to do the SIA online modules and sign all the agreements even with AA before taking this medication I done the online learning and what I could say I didn’t know any better. SIA said until you do that module you’re not able to be tested. But once you cross into that territory you have to still maintain compliance for 6 months after leaving the sports they cover. I think that’s a bit steep that if a dr prescribes you prohibited medication you can write and plead your reason for not obeying the 6 months of being clean post membership and remove yourself from the sports effective immediately. There should be an allowance for that other than for lifesaving treatments.
Ignorance would be bliss if you could claim it.

If I chase it I get to the far end of windage scope , and my arrow windage changes as the change of distance, .. Nice people at PSE , but no solution! Even tho I should not have to,, I was prepared to order another top right limb because when you let down the the bow pulls hard up and right .. BUT they only sell four,,, WTF.. It bXllocks and extremely easy for them to assume , I am doing something wrong, so they took no responsibility, I cant just buy another one either... BTW I ve had rampage XT I could tune, multiple C4s, Hoyt AlphaElite. And a podiumx.. GL

That is pretty much how it felt at my club and I took note of it but it didn't bother me. I wasn't there for pats on the back or to gain other people's admiration; just there to shoot arrows yeah. So just shoot arrows and get good.

and funny thing there recurve shooter's or Olipic style shooter's who think they are better than evry one else !! Haven't had the chance to shoot with these type's but I can tell you the frist time some thing would be said toward me they would have me BANDED and they would be living with one less arrow to shoot . As we some times use an arrow as target practice they give off a cool snap sound when hit broad side
And in that note POEPLE like this should take note as culd's need $ revanew $ to operate unless they are going to suport the club $$$$$

I’ve gathered from watching many Australian made videos the mindset of about anyone there in “ charge/ control”? is like a monarchy. There was a guy there that made a lot of vids and he was a bit different in dress and hair etc. He made numerous comments about the people running a club or two making people “ jump thru hoops” with trying to become a club member. From what I’ve picked up the ABA there is way overboard with rules and regulations for “ shooting a bow”. Maybe I’m wrong about my perceptions on this? Or am I? I was elected President of one of the very oldest archery clubs in Texas for 7 years. I made sure EVERY SINGLE person felt welcomed. There really wasn’t any RULES for the members at large. There are/were no prerequisites at all. No pedigree involved. Paid their memberships and event fees. We had 3-d shoots every month and 3 field/hunter rounds. There were stakes for the traditional shooters at each shoot. There can be TOO MUCH structure until it becomes a hindrance.

Now you have to be a high paid executive to afford one of today’s good bows, then the over priced sights and arrows. Golf is another business that is pricing themselves slowly out of business.

You will always get tyrants one archery clubs !! Anyone who wants power over another is a tyrant by definition ( fact)
I shoot in Cheltenham and am gmb standard , Iv had to do it alone ! I had such poor coaching from one of said club tyrants ( g Williams)and a mixture of control freak behavior and lack of knowledge mixed with arrogance held me back , I can also say there is maybe one club member who wants me to do well, the others all but hate me doing well!! Those people can’t and never will reach any kind of ok standard and get off on telling people what to do and making people feel bad about themselves! I am complimentary to every archer in the club and do all I can to raise their game !!
Iv decided to leave for a club which encourages, my reason is simple, make friends with people who want the best for you !!! Surround yourself with people who are like minded . Regards to club tyrants , find ways to expose them ( usually they have sociopathic tendencies or narcissistic tendencies) there are plenary Iv visions and literature on just how to get them to show their own true colors.
