The Arrows are dangerous! - I'm told - will they break?

  • Archery club members tell me these arrows explode out of a 20# compound and are too dangerous to shoot. We test the arrows out of a 45# compound.
Arrows breaking when shot occurs and we explain what are the reasons for it. Why arrow manufacturers have a warning "arrow must be flexed before shooting".
We shoot at 18meters and see if these arrows will break and how they will group in the target. A shower of rain comes down and the camera is damaged in the shooting of this video

After investigating the bow there were marks on the riser of the compound.
After discussion with Steve I agree this was the cause and to now believe there is nothing wrong with those arrows and the arrow in question did in fact fall off the rest at the time of release causing it.
Issue was I got caught up with everyone’s opinions. Lesson learned for next time. Great video steve

Saw this exact thing happen a few months ago at a field archery event. Young cub shooter had a blade rest on his bow and the arrow fell off the blade. I spotted it too late and was trying to tell him to let down as he shot it. Arrow snapped basically in the same place where Steve is indicating. Quite scary to witness!

I had one explode when i first got back into archery. I believe they had gotten damaged from contact with other arrows while shooting groups, which feel great, but i no longer do that. i do not know how others get away with it, but i do not shoot groups any longer and if i ever shoot carbons i do flex test them now.
I will add that I would not have thought about the arrows hitting the riser as they were released. Just like I would not have though about my arrows getting damaged from contact at the target.
It is a shame when folks do not listen to others so they/we can learn from people that know and are willing to share.
Another interesting video. Thank you for your time to help us.

Morning mate, about 12 months ago my dad had a similar issue with his black Eagle arrows. He had been shooting the Junxing M129 for 12 months shooting the same arrows at around 40 metres. I then purchased the Obsession HB33 for his bday, We set it to the same poundage as his Junxing but obviously it was more responsive and sent more energy through the arrow and on the first shot he Had an arrow brake about 4 inches from the nock. He used whisker biscuit rest so it wasn’t the issue, we then checked all his arrows and they had little nics and scratches down the shafts. So we retired thenm and I gave him a set of my Victory VForce elites. We now check all our gear before the start of each session. You can never be too careful.

I probably always say my best guess - You never really know - most times you are right. But when I went upto 56# my 500 spine arrows were still to stiff and the 600 to weak. It is really hard when people are outside the norm - So if a person has a long draw they will have extra poundage and short draw less energy. which is always good if people let you know what worked.

Always pay attention to your arrows. I had an arrow explode on me because it was damaged. Since then i always flex my arrows and found more the often faulty arrows because of creaking BEFORE i shot them! Once i had an arrow flying wonky after a hard hit on the 3 D course. I put it on a spinetester and it showed 15 lbs weaker then before, but no creaking sounds. I cut it in half alongside the shaft and there was a delamination of the carbon to the inside. From the outside it looked perfectly fine. I also change nocks after hard hits. I had a new bow blew up because the nock broke. It was the third shot this bow made!

I’m betting 99% of arrow’s breaking is because they became DAMAGED. A small fracture in the carbon weakens that structure. When the energy of the bow loads up stress it’s gonna to get weaker at the damaged spot each shot. Or it may break at the first shot after being damaged. ITS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE PEOPLE !

When I practice my archery, I shoot an end of 5 arrows each at their own separate target dot, never all at the same dot. This minimizes damage to my carbon fiber shafts and makes them safer in my opinion.

For what it is worth, as I am not a hunter, I do not need the arrows to fly "very fast". After a lot of research I chose to move from a drop-away to a whisker biscuit. Fewer moving parts, less to go wrong. I have experienced exactly what Steven said with regard to the arrow falling off the drop-away rest blade and being damaged upon release. In the 3 times that happened with my failing to catch the issue before release - all broke about 5" from the nock. Not on the first shot when that happened but soon after. The loss of 3-6 fps from my arrow speed is not worth the potential problems.

That would hurt. Lucky all the years I have been selling I have only had one person put an arrow through their arm. It was a 70# Oneida the guy wanted wood arrows because they are cheap. I said you will put that through your arm. He said no he knows better. That day he put one through his arm. When he brought the arrows he had mates and his mates said the archery bloke told you and you did not listen.
Graphlex had the problem they were so strong even when damaged they looked ok.
Im not sure how you get over an arrow through your arm. It scared me when Logans broke, then I was scared offering more arrows. Once you shoot and build the confidence back I guess.

Id go nock poor if I did that. Carbons are great for durability. But even way back when xx75 and game getters before that the arrows were good. Arrows breaking just a few inches in front of the vanes. My guess is faulty nocks or nocks requiring double clicks when inserted. So what happens is the arrow comes off the string prematurely at release, and the string slices thru the arrow from the side of the arrow.
