  • Brian from LCE walks you step by step on how to remove your balance shaft system from your 3RZ 2.7L engine.

WHY DELETE THE BALANCE SHAFT ON THE 3RZ?
Over the years we have heard so many different stories about why people remove their Balance Shaft
System on their 3RZ engines. The truth is: We first removed it to simplify our own race engines. Less variables
in the equation, less parts to fail. We found that if these bearings go out, the shafts will wear on the block
and the only solution would be to replace the block. This is far from a desired result on Toyota engine.
Anytime resistance is alleviated from the rotating assembly, more power will be produced. However, this kit is not
considered a power gain modification by LCE. We have done this modification to all our 3RZ Race Engines, and we have
sold hundreds of kits, for either daily drivers or professional racers, with no complaints. Vibrations will improve
slightly, but nothing too noticeable. (If you are an Off-Roader, you may not even notice it).
In summary, our 3RZ Balance Shaft Removal Kit is a great way to make your 3RZ more reliable and simple. Not to mention it
can be done without removing the engine from the vehicle. We recommend installing this system at the same time you are doing
your timing chain replacement, since everything will be taken off already. Comes complete with detailed instructions
    for a simple installation process.

Wouldn’t I be able to just cut the chain and pull it out and then leave everything where it is shafts and all ?

    • @subtegral
      @subtegral ปีที่แล้ว +1

That question never seems to get a direct answer.
Edit: So I talked to a machine shop in person about it. I was told that once the chain is simply cut and removed (preventing the shafts from rotating) then the bearings might turn on their own and block the oil galleys to the balance shafts - which would hamper oil circulation and therefore cause low oil pressure.
I was also told that if a balance shaft bearing breaks and is actually heard, then the engine block is already destroyed.

@@subtegral You are correct: due to 1 oil jet on the front of the block that oils the gears & chain for the balance shafts, as well as 2 oil galley's: one for each front bearing in each balance shaft. These would surely cause an oiling or oil pressure issue. Possibly other issues as well.

I’m no expert but my balance shaft bearing went out and caused the engine rattling noise while I was driving. I drop the oil pan and found balance shaft bearing was broken, i ordered the balance shaft delete kit but haven’t used them yet since i didn’t have the time to install it, I just cut the chain from the bottom without have to take anything out, only take out the oil pickup tube to gain a little bit more room to cut the chain from the bottom and pull the the chain down and put the oil pan back on and it drive fine, just a little bit vibration.

@@T-wahHow is your engine block not toast now from a broken shaft bearing?
Anyway, I do see this removal kit as the proper way to do it during a timing chain/ water pump job - especially since LCE has already received my money for it 😅

I used this kit and your egr delete kit on my new 3rz build my engine has a bad vibration at high rpms starting at 2500 i can feel it in the fuel pedal its bad enough o feel like the engine is going to vibrate apart is that normal or is there another problem ive put 16k on it since rebuild but i dont rev it past 3500

Deleting the balance shafts can cause the engine to vibrate a bit more but not in the way you are describing. You may want to get it looked at to see if there is a different underlying cause to the excessive vibrations.

I spoke to a local owner of a 3RZ-FE in a 1999 4Runner and he had 567,000 miles on it after 19 years of ownership as the second owner. He then sold it because it ended up with low compression in cylinder 2. He also told me that he'd never even heard of removing the balance shafts and their bearings until I asked him about it.
So I'm just wondering how his 3RZ reached 567k miles without losing a balance shaft bearing. Was he just lucky?

Sounds like he has some good luck yes.

@@LC_EngineeringIt's not the fact that a 3RZ could reach nearly 600k before a cylinder wore out that amazed me, it's the fact that the balance shaft bearings reached nearly 600k without failing.

Can't remember for this one in particular but you should be able to pick up a dead blow hammer from a few different places.

The 2RZ doesn't have balance shafts so it would not be applied to that platform.

No. Why would you think that. Because at the 8 minute mark, it shows him installing the bolt that holds the bottom of the timing chain guide to the block.

If these parts were not needed to begin with, why did Toyota build them this way?

The balance shafts only reduce vibration slightly. No other reason for them. If balance shafts are kept in a high mileage 3RZ engine, the balance shaft bearings ( the ones he removed in this video ) WILL eventually wear out, and if not replaced soon enough ( a costly repair, along with new balance shaft gears & chain ), the balance shaft iwill begin to rub against the block itself, scoring the block, and once this happens, the entire block is junk. This is one of 2 very good reasons to remove the balance shafts & related components in the 3RZ engine. The other good reason is: the balance shafts, gears, chain creates a fair amount of parasitic loss to the power of the engine. Removing the balance shafts & related components doesn't really show up as "power gains on a dyno", but throttle response is DEFINITELY improved. Ask me how I know. I even purchased this balance shaft delete kit from LCE. Result: your 3RZ powered Toyota will take off from a dead stop much better, even while casually driving. It also results in better fuel economy, due to getting rid of the parasitic loss created by these pesky balance shafts. The engine runs more efficiently. It doesn't have to work quite as hard to spin up in rpm's, because all of those components have been removed. Other auto makers use balance shafts in many of their engines as well, not just Toyota. I can't even notice any "added vibration" with my balance shafts removed. But I definitely notice better performance. The majority of 3RZ owners remove their balance shafts.

@@howabouthetruth2157 Thank you for this explanation, I knew there was a reason, it's just that nobody ever said why. If I had one of these engines I would do this for sure. I'm a 22R person right now, just replaced the dual-row chain

@@aerialrescuesolutions3277 You're very welcome. The 22R and 22RE engines are great little motors. But factory stock, they just don't have the torque to pull a trailer load up hills & mountains. I'm told this is the main reason Toyota replaced the 22RE engine with the 3RZ. Perhaps the same is true for the 2RZ as well, I'm really not sure. The 2RZ and 3RZ share the same block, head, even the piston/bores are the same. The only difference is the 3RZ has a longer stroke vs the 2RZ, giving it slightly more power & torque. I could be wrong, but it seems like I read or heard somewhere that only the 3RZ has the balance shafts.....but don't quote me on that. I bought my 2000 Tacoma 4x4 with 3RZ engine & automatic transmission brand new. My transmission is still in great shape, but they do run better with a manual transmission though. I worked the snot out of this little truck. After 378,000 miles ( finally blew a head gasket ) I just had the whole engine rebuilt, and it's better than ever. The bottom end was still fine, but I wanted the full compression & power of a new engine. Bored 0.020 over, plus new original Toyota head known as the Stage 1 head by LCE & master rebuild kit, new cat-back exhaust, the whole smash, over 90% of all parts were purchased from LCE. I love it. Wouldn't get rid of my little Taco for anything. The 22R and RE engines can be built to make more power, and it's up to the individual as to how much more power they want. Of course the cost goes up with HP gains. Best wishes, and enjoy your 22R. It's a little gem of an engine.
