100%! I jam packed my little RV when I went full-time, and my hobby on the road became: What can I toss out today!
I think I was always pretty sparse because my entry into full-time was never meant to be full-time. HOWEVER, even at that I was still WAY over packed and was off-loading items left and right.
Casey Roman got into a fight with someone on Facebook and got kicked out of a group? I find that hard to believe. Have a great tour.
😂
🤣
You are pretty smart. 😍
Lol!
Sharp and right to the point Casey.
Plus it can separate you from useless solar devices.
Common sense is a very rare item today, and that group that kicked you out showed the lack of it.
I will have to disagree on the Tire Pressure Monitoring System. As a full timer, my TPMS has notified me of at least 5 slow&fast leaks (mostly nails). I was able to fix the issues BEFORE a blow out. The leaks were on both my RV and my toad.
Same here. Few years ago, I did my normal visual inspection and all looked good. Turned on TPMS and drove to dump station. Alarm went off and I almost ignored it but then after a thorough inspection, I found the nail in the tire. I was so thankful I caught it before taking off on 1+ hour drive home through forest and no cell service. And, I didn't suffer any of the typical damage to the RV you see when tires blow. There are plenty of Facebook and TH-cam videos showing what blowouts can do. Of course, there will be the small amount of random immediate blowouts without warning, but for the most part they can easily be detected by TPMS before major damage is done.
We travel for 6-8 months at a time in our Class A. We have a couple of empty cupboards. I love the pared down, crap free simple life.
My preferred bear spray is the Glock 20, 10mm brand
You and I are going to get along splendidly
Can I have a link for that knife? I loved how you whipped that out. Do you remember the box cutter videos?
@@beverlyaslett7871 one of the officers gave me that one, but this is pretty close and a fraction of the price: amzn.to/47QoSjT
Glock…never leave home without it.
@@CaseyRoman I ordered it from Amazon. Love it. Can strap,it anywhere. Thanks Casey.
Please remind me not to piss you off when I want to borrow that tyre pump of yours 😂
'Nuff said! Great advice, as usual! Thanks Casey! 👍
Sound advice for travelers in Rv/vans/camping. We used to camp and the first time, I had way too much stuff I didn’t need. I learned only bare necessities. We did most all out cooking outside unless it was raining. We used paper plates, plastic forks, and paper towels. I did have silverware for four if needed. The less I had to wash the better. Mind you we were just camping a few days at a time. ❤❤❤❤
Where was this video when we moved into our tiny rv last April?? I’ve learned a lot of this along the way but this could have saved me a lot of money and agro 😅
Great video. However, I have always used regular toilet paper and never had a problem. After emptying my tank, I refill it with some water, borax, and Dawn dishwashing detergent, which helps keep the tank clean.
So far it has worked.
17:13 I like that line.'You've never been a victim of a violent crime'. Think it through, folks! Listen to Casey!
Sage advice as always Casey 🎉😂
Great video, lots of good advice. Good luck on your book tour, love from Canada.
I hope you travel thru Colorado so you can sign my WONDERFUL,funny book.
10:44 I've ruined 2 eva-dries by leaving them plugged in too long. Set a timer!
Having lived in a 1200sf house and now in 600sf, having pulled a 32’TT and now pulling a 20’TT, I can definitely say less is more! If you don’t have the space to put it, then you don’t have it!! I still have stuff that I can get rid of as well!! 😂
15:16 there was a panel at the women’s RTR on self defense. Bear spray not recommended for the reasons Casey said.
6:17 I suffered most when I got rid of all my precious coffee mugs 😌
You only need 1, and maybe 1 for company 🤔
It's interesting food for thought, but at the end of the day everyone's RV experience will be different and will come up with their own list of essential and superfluous items.
Girl...living in a 30 ft RV for 2 years now..(with 2 great danes and 2 cats). your minimalist mentality is good and I agree with many of your suggestions. But sadly, most folks can't fathom it. The waste of expense on some of those big expenses..solar etc...I fully, 100% agree on. However, so much is lifestyle choice...My icemaker is worth its weight in GOLD! Your lifestyle..does not always transfer to others...That being said...best advice..just get used to getting rid of stuff you end up not using. FYI-those of us who moved from a stix and bricks into full time RVing..by choice or forced by the housing market...it takes a minute to get rid of stuff you held dear for decades. Clothes and shoes is the worst part.
I think there's a significant difference of planning between a full timer and a vacationer. That said I was looking for inspiration to declutter, as I need all the help I can get along these lines. It's also different when you don't have a refrigerator, or an adequate one.
Really good video. Thanks, Casey. 👍🎶🕊️
I seriously like that rig, Casey. The murphy bed is great. You are stirring my road lust and I may not forgive you as I can't hit the road just now. However, you'd better keep producing so I can continue to live vicariously through you and your humor. 😘 You always say it so much better than I ever could. The naysayers always have a reason for what they pack, and rarely hear you when you say you're talking about packing to travel, not creating a permanent off grid tiny home.
Amen, Casey Roman!
plus you do not check tires when they are hot!
Perhaps a thicker mattress pad for bigger people. Two inches just doesn't cut it for some larger peeps.
You are so obviously a southerner - lol - 12 volt heating blanket☃ and bear spray 🐻🧸are absolute necessities. I think I will find some of those slippers though.
Agreed with most except solar. I have been full-timing in my 38 foot 5th wheel for over 8 years now. Rarely plugged in anywhere. LOVE my solar. Agree about running AC over 6 hours but that is what my portable generator is for. I did remove my RV AC roof units and had a mini split AC unit installed. It is so quiet and efficient! Safe travels to all!
I love how no nonsense you are. ❤ Great content!
Good advice and a lot of it is also good advice for every day living too. 😊
You sound like me! I see so many comments on limited cargo carrying capacity but they are obese and think they need 7 chairs and a full set of dishes. Plus an instapot, baking sheets.... You are going to get hate about the toilet paper. I'm 72 and have owned rigs since my 20's. Never put tp in any of them. Never had black tank issues.
The kitchen gadget phenomenon is out of control. Instapots, air fryer, gill, griddle, rice cooker, on and on and on....dear Lord.
Awesome video
Casey you are spot on! as usual. The KISS method is right. I like how you cut through the bullshit, and get right to the point. You know some people have to be smacked in the back of the head to make them see how right you (and others are). Keep up the good work! OH btw... you got a schedule of your book tour yet?
Working on it! Every time I get ready to head out, the weather turns and it’s either Armageddon storms or freezing cold. I think we may have to get a little closer to spring.
Casey, you enjoy creating chaos don't you?
And you don't need to decorate every inch of your rv with useless doodads. I've seen people take hours to pack their decorative objects for travel. Hanging plants, pictures on the walls, statuary, etc. Things that weigh a ton and are useless. Travel souvenir magnets for your fridge, they are heavy when the door is covered. In my rig, everything needs to have multiple uses. No useless decorative things allowed. I'm a firm believer in the 1 fork, one cup rule. Visitors need to bring their own plate. I do love those slippers though.
You are so smart and my favorite
I AGREE WITH YOU 100%.
Plastic ice cubes are great and reusable! I love them❤
Totally agree - solar is a waste of money - we had oodles of solar and lithium batteries on our last rig and couldn’t even run the AC. Why?!?!
This breaks my financial heart. These jokers keep trying to convince people to spend thousands on the hope of "off grid" but the technology is just not there (yet) to be an adequate replacement. I appreciate you sharing your experience! I'm all in on renewable energy but there needs to be more transparency!
You had me laughing so hard.
You are so right and practical!
I have pepper spray and a "real weapon", but I have to disagree with you on solar. Properly sized and installed solar is awesome! 😎 With it I can run a small AC fulltime (If it's sunny), along with my 12v fridge/freezer, TV, induction cooktop, blender, microwave, led lights, laptop, Maxxair fans, etc. The best part is I never have to plug in (Although I can).
How much did that cost you. Include all the panels, the batteries, the wiring, full install cost and the value of your time if you installed it as well. Please also include how long you can run that AC, specifically.
It's not been cheap, but I've done my best to keep the cost down by buying many items used or otherwise discounted. Full out retail cost of everything excluding my labor were probably around 10-12k, but I did not pay that much. Honestly there's not much of a labor difference between building a stand alone plugin AC/generator setup and one running on solar. As I built the entire system myself, I can't really offer a labor cost difference there.
My AC draws less than 100ah off my 400ah+ of batteries running at night with no solar input. During the day in full sun it can run indefinitely as the panels produce more power than the AC consumes.
I will say that I'm in very well insulated self build Promaster, so the AC/Solar requirements are quite different than what they would be in the average RV.
@@johnnyrambles I have no doubt that this has served you as you intended. As long as you have no intention of getting your money back on any of that, rock and roll homie!
That's the best thing about solar! You start getting your money back right away. 😁I've been traveling for more than 5 years now with the same solar panels, inverter, wires, etc. Only upgraded the battery when the costs of Lithium cells became reasonable. Not having to pay for generator gas or hookups has easily saved me more than my initial costs, so any residual resale value is just icing on the cake. @@CaseyRoman
@@johnnyramblesthanks for adding your experience. I still think it’s absurd but it’s valuable having different opinions.
Thank you for your Sage advice!
Covers are OK if it can ventilate, and Sun is not the friend of a sitting RV
Also necessary up north in snow country for winter storage.
I love this video, so informative. Thank you.
Great advice! Agree completely!
Ok but not everyone is trying to simplify their life while traveling. We only travel part time in ours and I like having my stuff around me. That was the point for me to get a van, I was over being in and out of hotel rooms all the time and never having what I wanted to hand. I wanted to be able to go to places and have my house and things around me. We have just added a trailer to our van for DH to use as a mobile office (I can't listen to meetings for eight hours a day for five days at a time). It means we can travel and see things and he can do his job.
Sometimes when he is working I can unhitch and go run errands or go see things and fill my time enjoying what is nearby but sometimes the van needs to be near DH and I am in one spot in bad weather and I like having stuff to do, my watercolors, cards, crochet etc. I like to be able to bake or cook interesting meals.
Solar and batteries have also worked out really well for us. DH needs to run a bunch of electronic equipment while he also needs quiet for meetings which a generator wouldn't work for. Him being able to work efficiently allows us more travel than vacation time would usually allow. Yes resell is probably bad but at this point we've had our van for four years and have no inclination to sell it at this point. I really loathe generators and it would be a last resort for us.
We don't heat or cook with propane and live in the Western side of the country so we don't need dehumidifiers and we don't have air con. We bought latex for our bed as we found out that memory foam freezes if you keep your rig on the cold side at night.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that your rig and your choices wouldn't work well for us and our rig and our choices would probably have you shaking your head.
I'm not sure why anyone who WANTS to haul extra trailers to carry a house-full of stuff with them would watch this video.
@@CaseyRoman😂
I watched because 1) I was curious and 2) I generally enjoy your videos :)
I don't want to haul an extra trailer but it enables us to travel during non-vacation times without me losing my mind from listening to eight hours of engineering meetings.

Word! Given the cost of gas and misery of clutter, rv and vanlife should encourage beneficial minimalism (like that imposed by long distance hiking where you carry everything) but in reality people most often "pack their fears."
Listen to the voice of experience.
I have the purple mop slippers 🥿
Also I don’t allow shoes 👟 inside my home.
Where do you buy the slippers?
@@noreenn6976 Machetazo (it’s like a Kmart or Walmart in the States)
I remind myself whenever I'm packing that I'm not going to Antarctica. There will be a box store to buy stuff.
Exactly! Some of the comments on these posts are hilarious. They are preparing to go to not only Antarctica, but also the jungle, under the ocean, hiking to the top of Mount Everest, and walking across the desert.
as usual! excellent advise!
As always, great advice and delivered with a sense of humor! I would be very interested in your advice for selecting clothes to take. I know that you're still working, as many young people on the road are, and I'm wondering how, as a woman, you can pack for professional as well as recreational life.
This is a great question! The approach I use on the road is still one I use today (in a house). I have a very small "capsule" wardrobe for work. Most people aren't paying any attention to what you're wearing unless you are VERY dressed up or down. They wont remember a white collared shirt and a skirt and unless you're in a big office you don't see the same people every day. I certainly don't see my clients more than once a week. So I have three of the same dress in three colors and I invest in a great jacket. I rarely, if ever, even take the jacket off. I. have the same pair of shoes in two colors: nude and black heels. Outside of that I had 8 days of "lounging gear," underwear, socks, etc. Because I do laundry on the 7th day. I'd never need more than that. In reality, we all have our FAVORITE shirts/pants/etc. Living this way liberates you from needing to impress anyone. I never needed more than this. Today I have a huge walk-in closet. I still wear the same damn things because, they're my favorite.
@@CaseyRoman Thank you! This is some great advice to keep in mind. And you're right. Even when we have huge walk in closets, we tend to wear the same few outfits!
Would LOVE to get my book signed by the one and only Ginja Ninja! Don't forget us fans out West. (Uh, way NW. Like to the border of Canada PNW.)
I don't get 1328 views but only 288 likes?! One thing about "way too much stuff" is the more of it you're hauling around, the more gas you're gonna use to do so. Doesn't matter whether you're car camping or have the biggest rig, why waste more money for fuel? The rest of it all makes a lot of sense, too.
On the road, you want flakey ice go to Sonic.
You are awesome !
Generators are quiet while not drivt
LOL... The Truth Hurts...
Can't wait to read the comment section, lol.
So if you are walking in the woods and a bear wants you to be dinner , you let him get in really close so you can stab him ?
Sigh. I want to congratulate you on completely missing the point. The people preaching this nonsense are not, I repeat: ARE NOT, worried about bears. They are suggesting bear spray be used against humans. Which is stupid and reveals that they have never actually been a victim of a violent crime. Anyone who has knows that you don't bring pepper spray to an assault. You bring something that will save your life.
@@CaseyRoman I totally agree and I wouldn't bring a knife to a gunfight .
@@CaseyRoman I wouldn't discourage people from having tire monitors or having bear spray or a knife or a gun
My #1 rule for my family has ALWAYS been (42 years) NO SHOES IN THE BEDROOMS. I don’t care how expensive they were, they are FILTHY!! Yes. They must stay at the front door.

You're a hypocrite to say someone is driving a gas guzzler and burning holes into the atmosphere when you're driving one yourself. Tent camp if you are upset about gas guzzlers. As for the TP, that is nasty to not flush it. I'm sure there is more to the story of being kicked out of a FB group.
