During the 2014, ECOGIG expedition, this beautiful colonial organism drifted past Hercules' cameras, and we followed it for as long as we could keep track. They are made up of many smaller animals called zooids, and can be found floating around the pelagic zone in ocean basins around the world. One famous siphonophore species is the deadly Portugese Man O' War.
This expedition was part of a larger research program focused on examining the ecosystem-level response to oil and gas in the Gulf of Mexico. The research group leading the cruise was called the Ecosystem Impacts of Oil and Gas Inputs into the Gulf of Mexico (ECOGIG) Consortium, which is made up of scientists from a wide variety of disciplines studying current flow, ocean chemistry, microbial activity, deep-sea coral communities, and everything in between.

It's a colony so it's more like an entire city being in disbelief that Giants exist in a different region of existence called "dry land".
@deltoid77-nick you could argue that a human is also a colony of different organs, the whole colony/organism thing is more of a spectrum, and siphonophores are on the boundary

*Interesting Siphonophore Info:* Siphonophores are comprised of many different animals (zooids) which all function as 1 organism. All the zooids in a given siphonophore colony are descended from a single fertilized egg! The egg develops into the protozooid, a polyp that gives rise through budding to all the other zooids of the colony!

I fricking love siphonophores, definitely my favorite sea creature by far. This doesn't even cover how insanely huge the colonies can get and how outrageous a form they can build when they make some good 3D shapes and have some of their members entirely specialized for one task.

Niamh Baszyl I’m pretty sure the best analogy is if you imagine that all of our organs were separate creatures on their own, like cells, that decided to work together to create a bigger creature. Like how our cells create us, but going another step further. They all have specific roles, some can move some can’t. I think.

no, the timeframe involved hasn't been long enough by tens of thousands of years.

It's possible, if we continue using those things for a few hundred more years. Evolution can work surprisingly quickly when the pressure's on, but I'd say at the minute the selective pressure would be to adapt to rising ocean temperature and acidity, not evade predators.

It's amazing what you see scuba diving, even if you're only 10-15 metres under.
Also called Blue bottles. Each group of colonies have specifics jobs, one colony catches the food with the use of stings. The others then process the food and another distributes it. Another also propels or drive the entire structure.
Recently got stung on my lips and wrapped around my neck whilst snorkeling off Southern Mozambique. Not fun, especially when one has a wee on board.

Absolutely stunning!! I knew about the Portuguese Man O' War, but didn't realize it was part of a specific group of creatures. And, to be honest, this one is just as spectacular in it's own way.

I saw a picture of this on facebook, I'm guessing from around 0:50. At first I thought it was a fish with some sort of horn, then I saw the high-res images.
I'm a bit unclear on a few points.
How big is it? It looks a few meters long to me, but I can't tell.
Is it known what species it is?
Is it free floating or actually maneuvering? At 1:04 someone says "it's putting on the breaks," but it appears to just be scraping the seafloor.

They say that it's smaller than a Portuguese Man-O'-War. So shorter than a human. It's apparently an undiscovered species of Siphonophorae, which are basically colonies of many small organisms that form a single larger animal.
There are both swimming and floating siphonophorae, but this one can probably maneuver by itself at least somewhat, considering that it seems to be sifting through the floor. It might end up stranded if it caught on something on the seafloor and couldn't move.
I'm pretty sure it controls the direction of its own drift, if not moving under its own power

its a shame they didnt catch this thing in the dark, just saw one on tv from Blue Planet and was hoping to be able to find the clip on youtube. They look absolutely insane when glowing in the dark with all their tendrils outstretched. The one on BP was also much longer, it literally looked like a nebula spread through the water.
also those really weird shifting shapes at the front of it reminds me very much of the "architects" from Mass Effect Andromeda, and kinda the Remnant in general. very cool.
if i am not mistaken they are unable to give this animal a classification b/cx it is actual many differn't specimens working collectively together. Think ants, worker ants, queen and guards. They all are ants but have special traits/jobs
Well, they're all the same species in this colony. You're right in comparing it to other colonial animals like ants or termites. Except the specialization of individuals is a lot more extreme in these guys
you are mistaken. Ants and bees are a colony of animals, while the siphonophore is a colonial animal. Every single individual(zooid) that makes up the colony is a genetically identical clone. All of their "stomachs" are conected. If we can't classify this just because it's made of many zooids, then we can't clasify cats because they are made different organs.

it's sad that the universe seems to be filled with nothing, if there just would be a bit more stuff, there could be cool lifeforms up there too, what do you thing is best for life to involve in, water or gasses like we do? Bodies seems to have a lot more room for creativity in water, since they don't have to focus on certain things
I cannot believe siphonophores exist. I just recently learned of a siphonophore and the fact that they are colonies of zooids. It is bizarre and freaky to me. Also the siphonophore video footage in 1998 off Japan freaks me out. It looks like a freaking tentacle monster. But I am so fascinated by these, I hope we can learn more about these siphonophores soon! and get more video footage of different species.

I've often wondered if all complex life forms are, in fact, colonies of single-celled eukaryotic organism, each designated to roles, such as eating, digesting, reproducing, etc. Given that each cell in a siphonophore is an individual organism that started life identical to any other eukaryotic cell, I also wonder what determines their function within the colony and whether they can adapt to a different function later. All in all, the very existence of siphonophores gives rise to a host of questions about the adaptability of complex life forms.

To those uninformed, who might feel it beneficial to know, these Siphonophores, have a biological function which allows for them to virtually "clone" it's self systematically, due to it's fractal-like and rudimentary body structure... It holds the function of immortality, it really could be stated firmly. The potential for eternally sustaining it's life force. I think this is shudderingly baffling and exciting.
Absolutely amazing the diversity of life we have on this one planet. Can you imagine the diversity of life in the entire universe?
