Islamic conquest of Persia

  • Since the 1st century BC, the Romans and Parthians had waged a number of wars that lasted for the centuries. In fact these military campaigns outlasted the empires themselves. Both the Roman and Parthian Empires reformed and were replaced by the Byzantine and Sassanid Empires, respectively. These two new superpowers continued their territorial disputes and military confrontations for centuries. But the Sassanids and Byzantines also had various proxy wars, in which they attempted to start rebellions in the opponent's holdings. One example of this was the Byzantine client state the Ghassanids and the Sassanid client state the Lakhmids. These client states served as a buffer zone against the Southern Arab raiders. And both these client states were Arab in origin, but the Ghassanids were Christian Arabs whereas the Lakhmids aimed to unite all the Arabs under one kingdom. In fact the last independent ruler of the Lakhmids, Imru' al-Qais, claimed the title of "King of all the Arabs." This vision of Arab unity would not be realized for centuries, until the rise of Islam and the consolidation of the Rashidun Caliphate, in 632. Once the caliphate was established the Lakhmids were quick to join their Arab brethren. But this made the Sassanids very anxious, as they had lost their buffer zone and client state. And so the Sassanid rulers decided to stir up rebellions in the region. These provocations lead to the declaration of a Jihad against the Sassanid Persian Empire by Caliph Umar. At the time this seemed like an ant declaring war against a lion. That is how the Persians mistakenly perceived it.

    After reading the overwhelming hateful comments, I have to say, the intention of this video was to shed some light on this important historic period and to create dialogue not further stimulate hatemongering. Its been more then a thousand years and both groups still hold resentment against each other. This is quite dissapointing.

      To be honest I'm not against any race of human being and I see all of them as 1 piece!
      I don't have anything against Arabs nor all muslims.
      But everyone should have the freedom to write/speak about anything we would like to question if it's not hateful or discriminating and if we have "proof" for it , then there will be a conversation without an ending it seems...
      I have to say that this video was really well made with a lot of favoritism , but unfortunately I don't agree with many parts of it and that's probably because of what I've experienced and read/heard about in my lifetime including historic proofs about my country!
      Hopefully the hateful comments will stop and we'll see some logical and learning comments from now on ;)

    Conversions to Zoroastrianism are more related to Iranian nationalism (or patriotism) rather than religious reasons. Plus most conversions take place among the diaspora Iranians. So you might see a lot of Iranian youths with Zoroaster related jewelry in the US, and that might give you the impression that Iranians are converting back. But the situation is different in Iran.

    As a Zoroastrian I don't know what to think of this video. A quick glance at a simple resource like wikipedia will show that thousands of Zoroastrian priests were executed and in one city 40,000 people were killed and hanged. Although millions may not have been killed, hundreds of thousands were during the arab invasion. It's why some fled to India.
    Although I have to agree with you that many Iranians did willingly convert and that Zoroastrianism does have a lot in common with Islam. It is also more of a philosophy than a religion, but it is still a religion.
    The biggest blow to Zoroastrianism came from the Safavids and Qajars, Iranian dynasties, rather than the arabs.

      ***** The Arabs brought Islam to Persian but they didn't exterminate Zoroastrianism with the fervor that later Iranian and Turkish dynasties did. They came, they saw and they conquered, but then they kind of left. The later dynasties enslaved and persecuted Iranians to such a high degree that it's amazing most people don't know that. The funny thing is the history of the enslavement is even in our blood, I did a free DNA test and found that 15% of my DNA is East African which is found only in 4% of Iranian population. The theory is that this DNA came to Iran via the slave trade. I think many Iranian Zoroastrians have African slave blood in them, as we tend to be darker and more sturdy in our build.
      It was in fact a Parsi who had to help the Iranian Zarthosti community in the 1800s because the situation was so bad for us under the Qajars. The Shah was great for Zoroastrians...but we all know what happened.
      This is something most Iranians don't like hearing, and I try not to speak too much about it because I want to see the theocracy fall in Iran and would love to have a small Zoroastrian enclave in Iran.
      But that is fantasy, Islam is a part of Iran now and has been due to the indigenous Iranian leaders themselves. Bahaism and other faiths will not thrive because the regime is brutal at suppressing any dissent.
      My religion will fade into history now. Eventually Islam will as well, but not for a long time.

    What a beautiful nation and country was Persia, islam only brought opression and destroyed it. I hope one day Iran will get back to its roots.
    When the Arab commander (Saad ibn-e Abi Vaghas) faced the huge library of Cteciphon, he wrote to Omar: what should be done about the books? Omar wrote back “If the books contradict the Koran, they are blasphemous and on the other hand if they are in agreement with the text of Koran, then they are not needed, as for us only Koran is sufficient”. Thus, the huge library was destroyed and the books or the product of the generations of Persian scientists and scholars were burned in fire or thrown into the Euphrates. By the order of another Arab ruler (Ghotaibeh ibn-e Moslem) in Khwarezmia, those who were literate with all the historians, writers and Mobeds were massacred and their books burned so that after one generation the people were illiterate.
    Other libraries in Ray and Khorassan received the same treatment and the famous international University of Gondishapour declined and eventually abandoned, and its library and books vanished. Ibn-e Khaldoun, the famous Islamic historian summarizes the whole anihilation and conflagration:” where is the Persian science that Omar ordered to be destroyed?” Only few books survived, because the Persian scholars translated them into Arabic.
    Such a sad story...

    when the arab muslims finished their conquest with the sassanid persian empire, to my country afghanistan ( also known as ancient ariana, ancient bactria, or khorasan), with all its ancient history, islam was also introduced by the arabs from the arabian peninsula. and i must say: may God bless those arabs who showed us islam. we afghans left the darkness of paganism and entered the light of islam, because of the struggle and call of these desert arabs. previously, my forefathers used to worship idols and fire, but then we were righty guided by islam and realized that nothing is worthy of being worshipped except for The Creator of the universe. injustice and opression were eliminated and justice and mercy prevailed when islam entered persia and khorasan (afghanistan). we afghans, experienced our greatest and flourishing time, when Islam was the dominant political and personal system in our country (eg. during the era of the ghaznavid, ghorid, hotak, and durrani empires) and we experienced our worst times when we distanced ourselfs from islam. now, islam is the most beloved value for the the formerly pagan afghans. on top of that, islam is the only key to paradise. Zoroastrians were forced to pay Jizya tax and discriminated during the Arab occupation. If they failed to fund the money they were either enslaved, tortured, imprisoned or killed. Furthermore, converters to Islam enjoyed numerous benefits. Obviously it was more attractive to convert instead of suffering. So the Islamization of Persia was not exactly as peaceful as potrayed here. Barely any Zoroastrians are left today. Consequently it is only a comfortable myth that Islam itself offers free choice while history clearly proves otherwise. Slavery, mass executions, limiting women rights and an aggressive expansion by Arabinizing everything west of the Zagros mountains shows a different image. Finally, the Arab peninsula was once full of Christians and Jews but where are they now?
    The only time when tolerance was practiced in Islamic countries was when rulers were not braindead Islamists and the Religions tolerated were usually of Abramic origin. We all see the problems arising from Islamic fundamentalism in the modern world. Reactionary Islamists like Erdogan lay the foundation for extremism. Quran schools from Qatar and Saudi Arabia basically recruit future terrorists. Also the Islamic regime of Iran funds Shia extremists in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen and Gaza. In addition, when Muslims decide to leave their religion they get persecuted, despised by their own family or even worse. ISIS literally enforces the Quran with the Hadiths and Mesopotamia turns back into an ancient Caliphate. Afterall a lot of people do not have the guts to question the true nature of their own religion since it is part of their identity and it would mean to turn against many things. It is time for the renaissance in the middle east like in the west where the countries managed to free themselves intellectually and culturally from the shakles of medieval Europe.

    • @Wartenss
      @Wartenss 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The jizya tax isn't really that much, in fact, Muslims payed more tax compared to non-Muslims. So I don't know what you're talking about. Plus the non-Muslims were not obligated to join the army, while the Muslims were. Where is the benefit in that?
      Well the Arab slave trade itself is Un-Islamic. It is haram to enslave innocents, the only ones that can be enslave Islamically are prisoners of war.
      The mass executions you highlight are most likely un-Islamic. "Limiting women's right", how did Islam limit woman's right exactly? You might say hijab, but head wearing was widespread back then, it wasnt a major issue.
      "Aggressive expansion by Arabinizing", i'd say most nations( especially influential and successful ones) have done aggressive expansion. The zoarastrian persians were no exception. There is still Christians and Jews residing in the Arabia."In addition, when Muslims decide to leave their religion they get persecuted, despised by their own family or even worse.", well yeah, when you leave a society's main ideology or beliefs things will become bad for that person. In the west, if you dont support lgbtq, your life is ruined.
      Also, can you demonstrate how ISIS enforces both the Quran and Hadith correctly?
      Also, tolerance has limits. You cannot disrespect Gay people, a flag of the nation in the place your living in without intolerance.

      Shahanshah of Persia Julian was the last non-Christian emperor of the Romans, and his military campaign was short and didn't involve the "convert or die" tactics that came with Islam. And the Sassanids had been militarily active against the eastern lands of the Roman Empire at that time, so his military campaign was hardly unwarranted. Even so, it wasn't any sort of long-term campaign to "conquer" Persia. And no, there was no attempt to conquer Iran "many times" after that.

Poof it dissappeared with the appearance of the modern world. ***** yes Islam says that. Allah is the only God he sent all the prophets peace be upon them to guide the people to the right path. Islam is the last religion. He has sent down upon you, [O Muhammad], the Book in truth, confirming what was before it. And He revealed the Torah and the Gospel. Merry the mother of Jesus Peace be upon him has a full verse in the Quran. She's not in hell fire as you said. May god guide to the straight path my brother.

      محمد خليفة All have sinned and come short of the glory of God. The price of sin is death. For the Creator created us all, and gave us the ability to choose to live righteously or sin. We have all sinned. We all deserve destruction at the hands of the Creator. But God sent Jesus to live among us. And Jesus is God's Son, who was with Him in the beginning. And Jesus lived among us and lived perfectly, and yet was still willing to die to take our punishment for our sins upon Himself. And then God resurrected Jesus, so that now Jesus may beseech our forgiveness from God.
      No one receives God's grace without accepting the Salvation offered by Jesus. What God wants from us is to acknowledge our sins, accept the sacrifice of Jesus for our sins, accept God's forgiveness, and to strive to live righteously. Living righteously means loving God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and loving our fellow humans as we love ourselves. We are to treat ALL humans with love and kindness and be charitable and forgive, even as God forgives us.
      Muhammad taught conquest in the name of an old Arab pagan god of the moon. He conflated this "allah" with the God of the Jews, and never understood Christianity at all. He lied and murdered and sexually molested at least one young girl, and led armies of Arabs to conquer and kill and oppress other people in the name of his made up god.
      Islam is a lie. Christianity is the path to God's grace.

    • @BMcbugger
      @BMcbugger 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Badr M The Romans and Greeks were using toilets and baths for more than half a millennia before Muhammad was even born. The Muslims were wiping their rears with their hands before they conquered Roman cities where Roman plumbing was already in place. The Romans and the Greeks were making clocks and aqueducts and had perfected the arch and dome roofs more than half a millennia before the first Arab decided Muhammad was worth following. The Phoenicians made clear glass and Greeks had mapped and explored most of western Europe and North Africa more than a millennia before Muhammad had sex with his 9 year old "wife". The Jews had a devout and continuous relationship with God and written scriptures for over 2,000 years before Muhammad slaughtered his first victim.
      Every bit of knowledge the Muslim world gained, especially the pagan Arabs who decided to worship the moon god Allah because Muhammad said so, was gained from conquering the libraries of Alexandria and Antioch - to which they had almost exclusive access after burning a large number of books - and in 400 years they made almost no advancements at all. Even with almost all of the most advanced accumulation of human knowledge in the world at their disposal.

    As an Arab, I would like to convey the truth. The lands that were conquered during the Islamic conquests were not originally Arab lands. The people inhabiting those regions were not Arabs by ethnicity. Through the forceful conversion to Islam and the imposition of Arabic language and Jizya, they were assimilated into Arab culture. It's a truth that is often overlooked or hidden, but there's no reason for me to deceive. As a proud Arab, I want to emphasize that the true Arabs are those who reside in the Arabian Peninsula. The Arabs outside of the Arabian Peninsula are a mixture of various ethnicities, including Arab, Black, Berber, Aramean, Jewish, Circassian, and others.

    It is impossible to understand the Mohammedan expansion without understanding the devastation caused by the 26 year conflict between the Eastern Roman Empire and Persia. There is a big difference in mentality between Persians and Arabs and we see this even today. Iran has offered refuge to many religious and ethnic minorities persecuted in Arab and Turkish lands like Christian Armenians, Assyrians, Mesopotamian Mandeans, and even Jews. Persians are more noble and educated as a population in that wherever they go, they respect local customs and traditions whereas Arabs tend to be overbearing demanding and isolate.

    • @SyrianApostate
      @SyrianApostate 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What are you talking about? In many Arab countries there are much more diversity than in Iran. Saudi Arabia does not represent us AT ALL. In Syria there are dozens of ethnic/religious groups that have coexisted for centuries in relative peace and so is Lebanon, Jordan, Morocco and other countries as well.

    • @artemisaria4912
      @artemisaria4912 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Najati Ghazal Correction Syria HAD diversity of faiths and cultures but are hanging by a string. The only protection they have is by Assad not those Sunni neighbors Morocco? Morocco is 99% Sunni muslim How is that diverse? And Moroccans have a nasty reputation in Europe from prostituting Dutch girls by tricking them into love, to waving Ottoman flags in the center of Athens Greece yea real tolerant not to mention the drug dealing in Paris France Jordan? Jordan is 92% Muslim and only so because that king is educated in the West wait until one of their own home grown turns into a leader than we'll see that 8% minority shrink to Moroccan levels. and Lebanon what a cluster f**k. The point is Shia have always been less orthodox than the Sunni but in particular the Persian culture itself has always been more tolerant less tribal. Iran is more diverse than any of that region, there are Jews, Georgians, Circassians, Armenians, Assyrians, Turkic Qashqars Turkmen, African and Arab. as well as all the Iranic peoples sunni shia, Sufi, Jewish christians, Bahais, Zoroastrians, but most of the Iranian populace is Agnostic or Atheist. That's what makes them different than Arabs and Turks.

    It’s not true that Zoroastrianism was not an organized religion that only the elite understood and practiced. During the time of Sasanians it was very much centralized and the state religion and moved from an oral tradition to a written religion. Persians did experience cultural genocide and it’s a fact that within the first century of The occupation the fire temples are destroyed. The ethnic cleansing/ genocide of Zoroastrian farmers that took place in the rural areas of greater Iran wasn’t until the Mongol and Turkic invasions. Your history is a bit skewed. To say that Iranians embraced their occupiers religion is insane. Iranians were systematically converted and we never lost our cultural and linguistic identity because we stayed true to our customs and didn’t like the oppression. What’s more, Iranians lost their jobs, access to power, public agency, etc. These reasons are why they converted. No, they weren’t taxed to death, but they were third class citizens in their own country…
    Furthermore, for Iranians to convert from a philosophical religion to an organized religion seems counter intuitive to the logic of embracing Islam as you claimed.

    Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha, popular nonsense... Islamic expansion was very natural in that era because there were no fixed borders or international laws defining borders. These countries expanded and contracted and their borders changed according to the expansion of their armies... a natural thing that the Persians, Romans, Greeks and almost all civilizations did... but if he did it... All Arabs cry

    Iranians hate Arabs because of the old Islamic conquest of Persian Empire, but Arabs brought Islam to them and that was great job, while Persians invaded parts of Arab lands continuously (Iraq, Syria, Gulf, Oman) so, should we hate them back ?? or, why cant we love each other as neighbors and have good life side by side
