    UPDATE: GoPro released the Hero 12 and the new Max Lens Mod 2.0. The new Max Lens Mod is a HUGE improvement over the previous generation. The field of view is wider, the optics are better, and it now supports 4k 10bit video. See th-cam.com/video/003bw_P-z6Y/w-d-xo.htmlsi=v75xAZdjJOfWoKan for an example.
    Let me know if you're interested in seeing a comparison between HyperView and Max Lens Mod 2.0!

    Happy to see some side by side for MTB chest POV use. Despite the 2.7k limit, I've been using the max lens mode since the Hero 9 because the horizon lock really does make the video more viewable without needing to add in a single axis gimbal.
    But now I'm torn after picking up a Hero 11. The Hyperview is great, but it's hard to ignore the lack of horizon lock, and obvously linear isn't an option for this stuff. (As you mentioned in other comments as well, Reelsteady crops so heavily to try for the same effect that it might as well be on the linear lens.)
    Sadly, I'm kinda leaning towards adding in the bulk/cost of the Quark 2 just to use the newer 11 view and resolution wihtout losing the horizon leveling. $100 max lens to get level, lower res, lower bit depth, vs $200 for full res, hyperview capability, 10 bit... one just has a (high) risk of lens damage (my old max lens is already scratched up and is why i'm looking at replacing it if I keep using it) while the other adds bulk and another battery to charge. Tough call.

      Thanks for the comment! To me the biggest difference between the two is image quality. The clarity and color of Max Lens Mod is so much worse than the built-in lens. I’m not sure if I have a defective Max Lens Mod or not, but the difference in quality is striking. I do miss the horizon locking at times, but not as much as I thought. The Quark stabilizer may be the perfect compromise.

    Thanks for the side by side comparison. I use the max lens mod from day one on the 9 also on the 10 and now also on the 11 (you can see that on my TH-cam channel). Resolution will never be 4k that is not possible with this sensor. The only thing I was hoping on was that the GoPro 11 with Max lens mod would do 2.7K with an 8:7 aspect. That gives the ability to quickly pull Instagram reels out of normal landscape orientation. I hope the software team at GoPro will make this possible in a future update.

      8:7 support for the Max Lens Mod would be awesome! I hope they add that.

    I have a question. For the max lens footage, did you record in 4:3 and then crop to 16:9 in editing or did you record in 4:3 and then render the video into a 16:9 format? I did my own testing and the gopro hero 11 with the max lens mod records wider than hyperview when recorded in 4:3 and then rendered into a 16:9 video using a third party software

    • @GlennRuehle
      @GlennRuehle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Everything was recorded in 16:9, and all footage is straight out of the camera (no color grading, sharpness adjustment, etc.). I wanted to take all software out of the equation for this comparison. You are correct that 4:3 Max SuperView footage can be stretched out to 16:9, but that requires more work in post.

    Right now the max lens is pointless with the Hero 11 in my opinion. Do you think GoPro will update the firmware to make it work with more settings? I bought one, but am thinking of returning it now.

    • @GlennRuehle
      @GlennRuehle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Max Lens Mod is still the only way to get a wide angle shot with horizon leveling. I would be surprised if GoPro adds any more Max Lens Mod settings with a firmware update.

      @@GlennRuehle Ahhh I see. What about using horizon levelling with Reelsteady? Or is it not as good?

    • @GlennRuehle
      @GlennRuehle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LukeMaximoBell1 I haven't played around too much with Reel Steady, but I know it cannot do full horizon lock, and from what I've seen it also crops in quite a bit which reduces the field of view.

    How about the max lens mod distortion? I really hate that distortion in hypersmooth mode,seems a lot better in max lens mod

    • @GlennRuehle
      @GlennRuehle  ปีที่แล้ว

      The Hyperview distortion does get distracting on sharp corners and when watching on a larger screen. The Max Lens mod definitely has less distortion. I just wish it had the same image quality.

    So in your opinion, which do you prefer more? The 11 with your settings, or using the MLM?

    • @GlennRuehle
      @GlennRuehle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really like the detail and 10 bit color in Hyperview. The only thing I miss from the max lens mod is the horizon leveling, and the ability to shoot vertical video with a horizontally mounted camera (with the max lens mod and horizon lock you can tip the camera 90 degrees when you start recording and it will record vertical video).

    • @GlennRuehle

      Yes, both HyperView and HyperSmooth can be used at the same time. The terminology can be a bit confusing!

  • @themiddleagemasher8108
    @themiddleagemasher8108 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Well i have this same problem. I can’t decide.. 5.3 at 30fps is better than 2.7 at 30fps. But i think the max lens gives better stability and smoother footage.
    But them my hero11 is the same as the Hero9 then 🤦🏻‍♂️. I Was hoping that GoPro would have figured out how to get at least 4K with the max lens mod for the 11

    • @GlennRuehle
      @GlennRuehle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Max Lens Mod does give better stability. However, using a Sportsman mount helps quite a bit. I've done testing with basic HyperSmooth on the Hero 11 using the Sportsman mount and it is really good (I just posted a Ponti Trail video on my channel if you want to see an example - and that was on a hardtail).
      Overall the image quality of the Hero 11/HyperView combo wins out for me. The main thing I miss is horizon leveling, which also enables vertical capture with a horizontal mount.

    • @themiddleagemasher8108
      @themiddleagemasher8108 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GlennRuehle Yeah I think the hero 11 image quality is better I do miss the horizon leveling but the Hyperview on the 11 does stretch it out quite a bit and give you that big old fisheye when things get busy

    • @GlennRuehle
      @GlennRuehle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@themiddleagemasher8108 Yeah, hyperview does get a bit stretchy, especially around tight corners. Hopefully GoPro will update the Hero 11 software to give more resolution (and ideally 10 bit color) with the Max Lens Mod. That would be perfect!

      @@themiddleagemasher8108 “when things get busy” that’s actually a key point there for Hyperview. It comes off pretty clean for me at high speeds on an open motocross track. But for instance like in this video where you’re going in and out of trees and around bushes I can see where it would be less ideal. I have a video on my channel of what it looks like with Hyperview on a less busy motocross track.

    • @GlennRuehle
      @GlennRuehle  ปีที่แล้ว

      My go-to setting for MTB are similar to yours. The differences are:
      - 5.3k instead of 4k (probably doesn’t make much difference)
      - Frame rate: 30fps. 30 (or 24) fps gives a much better sense of motion due to the slight blurring at speed.
      - Hyperview instead of Superview. Matter of taste here, but Hyperview can make things feel more immersive.
      - EV Comp = -0.5. (-1.0 can get a bit dark at times)
      - White Balance: 5500 (for sunny days) or 6000 (for overcast)
      - Sharpness: Medium (or low).
      - Color: Natural. This looks pretty good without any tweaks and is still easy to tweak if needed.
      - Wind: off and use both dead cats and a wind slayer. Wind auto or on ruins the audio.
      What are you unhappy about with your settings?

    Woah...got my new GoPro11 the other day (upgraded from the 9) and shot a couple of quick 1-minute clips. Uploaded into my editing software and holy crap. A 5.3K at 60fps took 23 minutes to load into my editor. Tried all different settings and still took enormous time to be able to edit. Went back to my GP9 and it loads fine. WTH? I'm thinking of sending it back.

      File sizes are way bigger with more frames loaded. Do the math 60 FPS x 60 seconds. Loads a lot more detail. Try a faster sd card with better read/write speeds or somehow to transfer it quicker. It is what it is. With more quality the files are only going to increase.
