- In 1979, Paramount’s Star Trek: The Motion Picture hit theatres, to a rather mixed reception from critics and audiences. While many predicted the film would be a big money loser due to the fact that the budget had gone dramatically over-budget, making it one of the most expensive films ever made up to the point, in the end the film eked out a profit. It did well enough that Paramount was willing to take another chance on the franchise, but their approach would be quite different, drastically slashing the budget and hiring fewer A-listers behind the camera. But, to the surprise of all, this proved to be exactly the right move, with the resulting film, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, a smash-hit that relaunched the franchise as a legitimate big screen property and introduced the adventures of Kirk, Spock and McCoy to a whole new generation. We dig into the greatest Star Trek movie of all in this episode of Revisited.

Wrath of Kahn is what got me into Trek. (I am 53) I watched the first one, But I just could not get into it. (I love it now) Ricardo Montalbán stole the show in that movie. All that was missing was him saying that the Captain's chair was made from rich corinthian leather. lol And Spock's death scene. Gets me tear eyed. Every single time!

Star Trek II also introduced me to Trek and is my favorite. Like you I also wasn't fond of TMP... at first. Now it's one of my favorites. If I had one negative critique of TMP it's too similar to 2001: A Space Odyssey, but it's classic Trek. Very much like TNG in that it isn't a classic villian story and the resolution of the conflict involves understanding and reaching a compromise between protagonists. I get that isn't for everyone, but that is Trek!
Spock’s death is one of the most iconic
I still can't watch that scene without being brought to tears. The part the gets me is when Spock enters the chamber and Scotty yells "NO SPOCK DON'T!" Destroys me every time.
The way Kirk stutters at his eulogy...brilliant acting.
Maybe the best death scene in movie history-and certainly, no doubt, the best “Trek” film ever. Spock’s death and farewell to Kirk is still amazing and emotional more than forty years later.

Walter Koenig has stated that Khan remembered him because Chekov kept him waiting to use a toilet on the Enterprise during Space Seed and when Chekov finally exits Khan is there and tells him he always remembers a face :D

You gotta appreciate Nicholas Meyer for saving the Star Trek movie series twice. Khan is one of my favorite movies.
I love Wrath of Khan but I have grown to appreciate STTMP Director's Cut a little more because I feel it is more diverse and inclusive than Khan.
Just wish someone would have told him (Walter Koenig) that he wasn’t in the original episode. That’s probably the most unforgiving continuity error in cinema history.
At conventions Koenig and Montalban would say it was because Chekov was in the bathroom with the flu when all this went down.

Also, Kirstie Alley is great in this movie. My wife is still blown away that Alley was in Star Trek anytime we watch Wrath of Khan.
I just watched 2 and 3... And still chuckle that John Larroquette is a semi random Klingon in 3.

As a long time Treki, stared watching the 1960's Star Trek TV show in the early 1970's while, I was still in Middle School. This movie "The Wrath of Khan" is, just the best ever Start Trek movie with the original cast ... period. (smile...smile).

This was actually one of those instances where the sequel is better than the original. It also reinvigorated Star Trek for a New Generation.
If it weren't for The Wrath of Khan, I would have not become a star trek fan. Looking back, Star Trek the (slow)Motion Picture is enjoyable as a super long season 2 TOS episode, but TWoK is a real movie. The best part is it requires very little investment from the audience to know who, what, and when things are happening. Truely the definition of a great movie, and not just a great Star Trek movie.

I saw this recently at a 40th anniversary showing in the theater. I remember seeing it in 1982 at 12 years old and have seen it since then more times that I can count. Going to a modern theater in 2022 I was a little worried about how it would hold up on the big screen.
I shouldn’t have been worried.
Seeing this again forty years later on the large screen was a real event. The effects definitely hold up, the performances draw you in and the score sends chill down your spine and raises your spirit.
Spock’s death scene, seen forty years after my first time seeing, impacted me and I am not ashamed to say brought a tear to my eye. The giant screen upon which this scene played out with Horner’s score enhancing was simply amazing.

Definitely one of the best sequels of all time. You could practically feel Khan thirst for revenge. I remember watching this movie at the movie theaters when it first came out and when Spock died you heard all the women crying in the movie theater.

That wasn't FAIR to Kirk to say he "abandoned his son" to pursue his career. He did what SHE WANTED. She want David to explore the INNER mysteries of existence, rather than running around the galaxy. It's clearly stated in the movie. I would have loved to have a dad like that. My Dad would have loved commanding a starship! ❤ RIP Dad.
He didn't seem to have seen him for decades. That's abandoning.
I think it was pretty clear when Kirk said "I did what you wanted, I stayed away" was him excusing himself. They didn't seem to have an antagonistic relationship, the kind where she might have made it impossible for him to see his son. It kind of looks like he didn't need a whole lot of convincing to stay away.
You are right. Kirk didn't abandon him. He only did what was asked of him.
And, we don’t know if Kirk saw David from afar, provided financial support, etc.
@@RictusHolloweye - I _think_ they had him deliver that line that way as part of the bundle of regrets he carried . We all make choices , and it felt to _me_ that this was one he regretted , trying to excuse it out loud the way he had inside , his whole life . At least THAT'S the feel _I_ got from it . Just how it hit _me_ is all , but it works , so ... .
Love the music by the late James Horner, whom wanted to do a swashbuckling space adventure.
Jerry Goldsmith was contacted to compose the score but was too busy working on POLTERGEIST, RAMBO: First Blood, and The Secret of NIHM.
Parts of Horner's score, namely the track titled Surprise Attack, had some cues taken from WOLFEN and would be used in STAR TREK 3 for the Klingons and ALIENS, namely the track Futile Escape.
One of the best sequels of any film franchise in my opinion. I enjoy the backstory behind the making of ST2 because of how unfamiliar Nicholas Meyer was with the franchise and how much Harve Bennett disliked the first film. It really felt like Paramount took a serious approach and the limited budget really helped with the tense story, which I always see as the sequel to Space Seed, which I often revisit because of this film. Ricardo Montalban was a fantastic actor and his portrayal of Khan is amazing. I enjoy how Ricardo admitted that after doing 7 Seasons of Fantasy Island, it was hard for him to switch to the Khan character of vengeance.
Nicholas Meyer is a very underrated writer and director. I love his sense of humour in his interviews and he really was an inspired choice to helm a Star Trek sequel, later going on to co-write ST4 (Which felt a lot like his earlier Time After Time film) and direct/co-write ST6.
The music was also a definite highlight of ST2 by the late James Horner. I have revisited a lot of his earlier career scores, especially with 'Battle Beyond The Stars' and 'Krull' and you can definitely tell the similarities that he put into ST2 and ST3. I enjoy his many motifs and the adventurous themes that he put into the films.

You should probably have pointed out that TMP's budget also had all the failed Phase 2 stuff put into it as well as having to build all the sets and models. Harve Bennet was able to reuse shots and models to help save on budget like any good TV producer.
Time After Time is one of my favorite movies! ❤ Meyers' work is excellent!

She was over-rated, certainly by her agent, who allegedly demanded a fee for Search/Spock that was much higher than the studio was willing to pay.
At a convention James Doohan said Kirstie was certainly the better looking Saavik. Robin Curtis was serviceable but it’s always jarring to replace a main character with a different actor and Robin was kind of wooden as Saavik playing it more like a straight Vulcan than the Romulan we got in WoK.
Yeah , I was actually _disappointed_ when sitting in the theater for the original showing of ST-II I saw that they had replaced her . As pretty as she was , and she WAS , she really _MADE_ that character !

The JJ Abrams movies were mostly about action and battles and very little about depth. The characters more often bickered like children rather than acted like adult starfleet officers.
Benedict Cummerbund was ruthless as Khan Noonien Singh, but I never got the feeling of Menace and Animal Power that Ricardo Montalban so effortlessly projected in his scenes. He DEVOURED the scenery.;)
Exactly. Very superficial reading of the characters. Those films are quite terrible and forgettable imo; even the presence of Leonard Nimoy could not redeem the first Abrams movie.
AND there was little to NO _real_ attention paid to the love between the characters , certainly the big 3 Kirk , Spock and McCoy , but with Scotty , Uhura , Checkov and Sulu , too . The ensemble WORKED , and the _magic_ came from the LOVE for each other they built into the interpersonal dynamic developed in the TOS Series .
Easily one of my favorite films; supremely entertaining. I think I could recite the entire movie! The acting is just so juicy, lol.

As a kid the Nick Meyer Trek movies were indeed my absolute favorites. And they still are. The older i got, the more this whole Father-Son story element hit me harder and harder. I had no real connection to it as a kid but once i turned 30 i felt this bit even more and realizing that i never really was all that close to my father (except when i was really really young) and i always felt this moment of reconcile between David Marcus and Jim Kirk to be really really sweet and VERY realistically portrait (especially the awkwardness). It is now one of my favorite moments in Star Trek II and always touches me to tears.

I've always known that Preston's character is Scotty's nephew. I saw it in the theater. I'm always furious watching these other versions where they don't mention this. He was his sister's kid!
I remember Preston as "Tony" from Escape From Witch Mountain. That's such a great movie and I loved seeing the guy again in this movie.
It's in the novelization, which is always based on the script, not the release cut. Preston is also being tutored by Saavik, which is why she gasps when Scotty brings him to the bridge (instead of sickbay for some reason). I grew up in the sticks so I read the novel twice before the movie got to our theater. I remember specifically being disappointed that Preston's relationship wasn't mentioned.
A great film, with very good visual effects, nice pace and an excellent villain! Khaaaaan!
As a kid who grew up on ST syndicated reruns in the 70s, and who saw Wrath of Khan in theaters as a 16 year old, yes I can confirm this is the best ST film ever. Montalban was phenomenal in this one.
Let’s not forget the epic soundtrack that James Horner created for this movie.

It's a sequel to the Star Trek episode, Space Seed, where Khan and his cohorts escape Earth in 1996 and wake up 300 year later.
I served during the Eugenics Wars. It was a bad time for everyone. Always wondered where Khan and the rest of his genetic superfreaks escaped too.
Oh, wait, that was the First Gulf War, and we found Saddam Hussein hiding in hole. Eh, close enough.
Such a great film. So many great actors and characters. A classic.
I remember going to movies before this was released, crossing my fingers that they would show the Wrath of khan trailer. It really is, to me, the best of the trek films.
Kirk and Khan don't get to face each other in the same room, but the video confrontation still works.
_I_ think the forced separation kinda _makes_ the tension work !
Some of the principal cast reduced their fees, to ensure that the visual effects were as good as they could be. I believe this included Nimoy, Shatner and Montalbán, all of whom knew that it was going to be a special film.
They _knew_ they were doing something special for EACH of them and for the ART . You could see it on the screen , and _I_ think its what _makes_ ST-II *SO **_ICONIC_* !

A *TRUTH* _so_ OVERLOOKED in all "Modern Trek"
I was never a Trek fan(Star Wars for me)until I saw the Abrams films, that's when I decided to watch some of the old Trek films, and I have to admit this movie is not just a good Star Trek film, but a good film in its own right. Even if you're not a Trek fan, some might enjoy this one
A truly amazing movie. The pacing is non stop and it doesn't let up. Star Trek 2, 3 and 4 are an incredible story arc and great to watch.

Every actor gave a fantastic performance in this one.. the story carried the film the Actors filled the roles with a new depth that the television show hinted at but did not fully esplore
I wonder if some of the characters were supposed to be transgendered but it wasn't revealed to the audience. For example, there is a theory David was a transgendered man. And a few believe Saavik was actually a transgendered woman. So when I watch this film I look at both characters that way.

One of Kruge's condemned prisoners, he gave the others a chance to survive by attacking their killer knowing how the effort would end. 2. Saavik is a disciplined female Star Fleet bridge officer, and being Vulcan, tg is illogical in her culture. Superficially, one can mutilate body parts, endure suffering with disruptive hormone therapies, use makeup to alter facial appearance, but until chromosome pairs can be changed from XX to XY one cannot alter biological reality. But one can pretend.

Horatio Hornblower in space is exactly how Star Trek was described in the Radio Times back in 1969, when the series first aired on BBC TV.
I think Roddenberry himself, or it may have been Dorothy Fontana also defined that as the tone of the show
This one, alongside The Undiscovered Country, are my favorite Star Trek films.

Stark trek 2 " The Wrath of Khan" was got me into Star Trek as it was the 1st movie I saw of the series. I never saw the 1st movie "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" until quite recently, s I just found a copy n bought it and watched it in 2021! I turn 44 this summer so I think I am the same age as the 1st movie being born in '79 and have always loved all the Star Trek movies and series' that I've watched so I always found it strange I couldn't find a copy til then
2 was my favorite for a long time but now it's my 2nd with 6 being my favorite
There have been a lot of good Star Trek movies, and Galaxy Quest, but this is still the best.
Best film of all of the S.T. franchise. Best performance by Shatner. Best storyline of series. Best performance by supporting actor, Ricardo. One of the best sci fi movies ever!

Best Star Trek movie ever!
Nicholas Meyer's exceptional talent as a writer is what made Wrath of Khan & Undiscovered Country the two best Stark Trek films ever. Time After Time was one of my all time favorites as well, long before I knew who Meyer was. It was while being held up in releasing The 7 Percent Solution, that Meyer was talked into directing Star Trek II, which Meyer had wanted to title 'The Undiscovered Country' i.e. old age & death. Meyer says he lost that battle as a newcomer, but saved the title and won with Stark Trek VI. In my opinion, Wrath of Khan was his best 'win' for himself, and frankly, the entire franchise! Undiscovered Country was just a further testament to Meyer's ability to make a masterpiece out of the mediocrity that transpired in his absence.
I’d rank Nemesis easily above Insurrection, at the very least, and all three of the JJ NuTrek films if those are in the discussion. I think it’s always been underrated. It has some unique visuals and also has the virtue of giving us the best space battle in the history of Trek on film.

Excellent video, but I am a bit surprised that Kirstie Alley wasn't mentioned, especially in light of her recent passing.
For me, it always was more a tetralogy rather than a trilogy.

Yep... the ear worm scene always scared me away from this one as a kid/teen/even young adult until i finally just watched it one day, and realized it wasnt quite AS BAD as i remembered as my 6-7 year old self. Hate worms, let alone how they did it.

Gene Roddenberry originally called Kirk Horatio Hornblower in outer space.
I like SFdebris joke in regards to why Khan knows Chekov, which went something like, Khan is standing twisting and turning needing the bathroom. And then you hear a flush, and Chekov comes out and says " _Sorry, it's clogged, heh_ " and walks off. Which makes the scene in WoK more ominous :P
Also the odd-number Trek movie rule works out, IF - You consider *Galaxy Quest* to be the 10th Star Trek movie.

For me it's all about Wrath of Khan, Voyage Home and Undiscovered Country. The very best of the original series movies. But how could you not mention Kirstie Alley? That's just nuts!
Those are my favourite 3 as well. The guys who played the villains in Khan and Undiscovered were so charismatic.

Personally, as a non-trek fan, I liked Into Darkness, and consider it to be my favorite of the kelvin timeline films.

Wrath was great, but I really loved Generations. It tied a good plot, characters, classic star trek favorites like the Klingons and time travel into one sweeping epic where Kirk saves the universe once again.

Ahh the memories. According to my parents I literally saw this in a theatre before I saw my first house. Apparently a local theatre was re-showing it as part of the build up to Search for Spock.

The biggest error for me in tWoK is when Khan says he never forgets a face and recognises Chekov, but in the TOS "Space Seed" episode when Khan first appeared, Chekov had not yet joined the Enterprise crew, so Khan wouldn't have known him in tWoK from earlier. They really should have used Uhura because then it would fit better and actually make mores sense continuity-wise.
I had not seen the Motion picture one, but this one was my very first Star Trek movie..i'd keep up with it after this..and much layer on see the Motion picture..thought it Boring..then a little later reruns of the series..and plus NEXT GEN the series, around that small resurrection of the legacy series due to Next generation being on.
Heck yeah. I saw part 2 in the theater originally for $1. Even then that was cheap as movies were around $2.50.
