  • It's the team up you've all been waiting for! Dry and sarcastic meets dry and sarcastic! Two dull, unfunny, elderly men talk about an old, dull, dry film. WHAT COULD BE BETTER THAN THAT KIDS?!?!?!? Seriously though, Mike and Jim love Star Trek The Motion Picture. It's mainly because they are dry, dull, and elderly.

      Still the most hilarious event was the Enterprise and the Big Black Dick Ship in "Star Trek: Into Darkness" having a space battle in Earth's Atmosphere. Like really where the fuck is everyone else? How are they allowing this to take place? It would be like allowing two Airforce squadrons to have a dogfight over New York.

      Well, ignoring the others as someone else's vision (or lack thereof), in this movie, the Enterprise is in the process of being refit at home base, and V'Ger was making a direct beeline to Earth. The novel explains that she was the only Constitution-class ship to return from a five-year-mission relatively intact. And the Connies were Starfleet's workhorses at the time. She was the first to get all the state-of-the-art enhancements, and even though there was no time even for a shakedown cruise, she was the best bet at intercepting the intruder while it was still "out there."
      Kirk and Spock joining this mission were both happy accidents, which probably made the difference between the Earth being completely sterilized or the disaster being averted.
      You can build a huge fleet of all kinds of ships, but you don't build them to just hang around Earth; they all have jobs to do. And space is mind-bogglingly big.

    This film freaked me out as a kid. It felt so grown up, like the problems they were facing were tremendous, horrifying and yet really intriguing. I used to hide behind the couch when Spock attempted to mind meld with Vger.
    Compared to films of today where it's always one large villain out to take over/destroy the world, which is a concept that isn't so much frightening as it is routine, there's no mystery anymore. I'm not worried about the world being destroyed I'm just kind of enjoying the trip to defeat the baddie.
    I wish they made more films like this, where we don't understand the problem we're facing, where the "villains" motive doesn't make sense... that's what makes it horrifying and alien. How can we defeat a problem we don't understand? The mystery makes it something you want to watch.

    It’s not a boring movie. It’s a slow movie. It unfolds like a novel. Star Trek The Motion Picture moves as quickly as it needs to move. I watched it as a kid and really liked it. There were some scenes that I thought took a long time but even as a kid I understood why they were showing us slow moving scenes of this gigantic alien space ship. They wanted the viewer to be in awe of this space ship and terrified of it. It was effective. You feel like the Enterprise is as significant as an ant that could be squashed at any moment.

    • @Azzameen99AZ

      That movie was my very first Star Trek.
      I watched it whenever possible as a kid, which was aided by it being shown on television and us having a VCR and enough fresh tapes so I could get a copy of it.
      Mind you, I was watching this when I was in primary school, and we had the first two Star Wars movie on tape as well.
      I loved ALL of them.
      Star Wars was exciting because it combined several genres into a sci-fi movie about good and bad.
      But Star Trek just resonated. Never thought it boring. That first scene with the Enterprise just blew me away. Still does, but for different reasons.

As I've grown older (and with exposure to the JJ films - ugh) I've really grown to appreciate this movie in it's design and scope. And the music - Jesus! What majestic scoring! For me it really is closest to the spirit of the original show. I've come to regard this as my favorite of the films. It really is misunderstood and unappreciated. No, there are no battles....no action. But it's still great sci-fi.

  • @boomieboo
    @boomieboo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I remember seeing this movie as a kid and loving it even though I wasn't a huge ST fan. I thought a massive machine that was pondering the purpose for its own existence or even existence itself, was fascinating.
    The age-old question of knowledge vs wisdom was intriguing to me. And how Spock answered such a profound question with the simple gesture of holding Kirk's hand, was emotionally revelatory.
    Even at my young age, I was completely moved by that scene because it just brought everything home. How that bond of shared humanity is the reason why we're here. To have a place in each other's lives. And to love. Which was further illustrated by Decker and Ilia's love for one another. And their ultimate sacrifice to teach V-ger.
    How can this movie's theme not move you? It asks and answers the question so many of us ask ourselves. Why do I exist?
    I was shocked to learn years later that it was widely regarded as a boring, unsuccessful movie.
    So I have to say that I feel a bit proud for liking a more philosophical introspective theme as a kid when it went over the heads of most others, including adults, who were just bored with the concept despite its profundity.

    This is by far my favorite Star Trek film, and one of my favorite movies of all time. It's the only one to date that really captured what Star Trek means to me: voyages of discovery in a future where humanity has finally made it. It's also the only Star Trek movie that pushed the boundaries of what Star Trek can be on the big screen. There are more Enterprise visuals (interior and exterior) in this film than in the other five TOS films combined. The cinematography is gorgeous. The music and sound design are brilliant. The special effects are more beautiful than any Trek film since, including the reboot-era ones. The set design is beautiful and has a real sense of scale. And this movie establishes a great deal of Star Trek canon, as well as visual and thematic baselines.
    I've never seen a TH-cam review of TMP that understands what a special film this is, until now. Even though your review doesn't actually dwell at length on any of this stuff, you point out a few things that few reviewers realize: For instance, the fact that the Enterprise only fires a weapon once in the film, and that isn't even in a combat situation--it's the only time other than Star Trek IV that the main conflict was resolved without violence and "might makes right." Or the fact that the chemistry between Kirk, Spock, and Bones can't just be flipped back on like a switch, and that the voyage itself is what glues them back together. Or the fact that this movie, with its sweeping sequences and slow, tension-filled sense of pace, can never be made again in the Star Trek universe, which has long since gone down the road of being a popcorn action franchise (at least on the big screen).
    This is one of those films overshadowed by its caricature. Most Trek fans today haven't even seen it. They just "know" from popular opinion that it's slow, boring, and has no chemistry. But when people watch it and post a review, every single time they say that the movie was much better than they were expecting. (They still don't usually rank it very highly among Trek films, but at least they recognize how much of a full meal it is.)
    To really enjoy this film, you need a few things: You need an imagination, which unlocks the many so-called boring sequences. You need patience, because this is not an action film and isn't trying to be. And you need to understand that this is the first and only utopian Star Trek film, and the only Trek film ever to be centered on exploration. There's no villain. There's no battle. The soul of the main conflict in this film lies in the questions Vejur asks: Is this all that I am? Is there nothing more? That is the closest Star Trek has ever come to explaining ~why~ we want to explore.

    • @NorthernLightProd
      @NorthernLightProd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      "Or the fact that the chemistry between Kirk, Spock, and Bones can't just be flipped back on like a switch, and that the voyage itself is what glues them back together. " Thanks for making this point. Even people who liked this film (including some of the cast) complained that there wasn't enough levity and palling around among the characters. But I so appreciate that the filmmakers refused to give audiences that instant gratification, and made the rediscovery of their relationships part of the film's arc. It's more realistic, given the time apart and the gravity of the film's plot, and in the end it makes their relationships all the more meaningful. So contrary to popular belief, I think this film was all about character development, and the acting was spot on.

    • @NorthernLightProd
      @NorthernLightProd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I should also point out that "Wrath of Khan" got deeper into their relationships, in a way that was fun, satisfying and realistically genuine. And this sense of human warmth was the perfect counterweight to the hatred of the titular character. But subsequent Star Trek films amped up the "palling around" and inside jokes to the point of absurdity, likely a turn-off for everyone but die-hard fans.

All very interesting and grown-up sounding to my 11-year-old self...

    The high quality production design (ship models, sets, etc.) totally updated the Star Trek universe and was influential on the series for decades. If not for the heavy investment for this movie, Trek never would have avoided the campy look (though as the movies continue, the quality gets more and more low quality looking, from extensive re-use and the lack of budget.) TMP gave the more modern looking Enterprise with the tiled surface, the blue deflector dish, and all the worker bees, the shuttles, the space station, the hatch doors, and the corridors, the bridge, sickbay, and engineering were all updated and defined for future shows.

    Harold Livingston's role in Phase II and Star Trek The Motion Picture is signficant. Harold was a close friend of my father's (Seymour "Sy" Cohen) and got me on the Paramount lot the day they were filming the V'ger probe scene on the bridge set. Harold said he couldn't talk to me that day because he was minutes ahead of the camera. When I did get to talk Harold credited a week's worth of meetings with Nimoy for the character development that went into the script. However, he said he also had to deal with the TV-show Phase II to Motion Picture off-and-on-again issues. Harold wrote several Mission Impossible episodes for Paramount and other TV shows prior to taking on Star Trek. His books on early aviation, Jewish American life, and creation of the Israeli Air Force are very good reads, even today!

      Several things led me to be a software engineer. One was an an invitation from Harold Livingston, a friend of my father, to visit the Star Trek, the motion picture, sets on the Paramount Lot. They were filming the V’Ger probe scene on the bridge set. In the scene V’Ger sends a probe to scan the Enterprise. The probe was a standard 2 x 4 wood beam with a bunch of strobe lights attached up-and-down. A thick electrical cable ran from the bottom of the beam off the set to the right of the bridge’s view port. A single man sat in front of a mini-computer with a 102 style green terminal. When they were ready to shoot the director would call “Probe on” and the man would type a single key on the terminal keyboard. The strobes would start flashing. I was 16 and already wrote software for mini-computers. I asked the man about the rig. He outfitted a sensor on the film camera to know when the shutter was at its most open position as each frame went through. At that instant his program triggered one of the strobe lights to flash. The effect in the movie gives the probe a brighter-than-white glowing look. The man told me he was hired and was making an income from writing the software problem to make the effect work. This was the first person to show me I could have a career working with software. This was 1978. -Frank

    I decided to watch Star Trek The Motion Picture again because of this review. What I found was that even though there is less action in it, I was able to watch it without feeling tired and needing to take a nap at the end of it. Whereas when I watch a recent Star Trek episode (Discovery or Picard) I do feel tired. I think it's because if I were to turn my brain on while watching a recent Star Trek episode I would be endlessly trying to make sense of it. So I begin to not care if it makes sense which then makes me wonder why I'm bothering to watch it. Which then makes me feel tired and bored (even though there is A LOT of action in it).

Star Trek: The Motion Picture is the most underrated Star Trek film of all time, it is one of my top 3 absolute favorite Star Trek films, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture had great stuff like the Jerry Goldsmith music score and good performances from William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. Star Trek: The Motion Picture is a way more better sci-fi film than any Star Wars film made after 1980's The Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars as a Franchise was never the same after Gary Kurtz left in 1980, and Return of the Jedi was the first decline of the Star Wars Franchise.

      Star Trek The Motion Picture's plot has a combination of ideas from Star Trek TOS episodes "The Changeling" (aka the one with Nomad) and "The Immunity Syndrome" (aka the one with a giant living organism that engulfs the ship), but with a very different resolution than both.

      Likewise, "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" (the one directed by Shatner) is a quasi-remake of the ST:TOS episode "The Way To Eden" (aka the one with Space Hippies) with '80s-inspired New-Agers replacing the '60s-inspired Hippies.

    The original cast hated their costumes because they were so difficult to put on, which was why the costumes changed in Wrath of Khan because it was in everyone’s contract that they wouldn’t do a sequel if they had to wear the dentist uniforms again.
    Also Leonard Nimoy strongly disliked this film because he said the film had zero remanence of what made Star Trek special, mainly that the movie was missing the a lot humor present in the show.

    • @NorthernLightProd
      @NorthernLightProd 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      He didn't hate it altogether, but he did make this strong critique. I have to disagree with him though. I really appreciate that the filmmakers refused to give audiences that instant gratification, and made the rediscovery of old relationships part of the film's arc. Given the time apart and the gravity of the film's plot, a lot of joking around would be inappropriate and unrealistic. We also would have lost the central arc of Spock's inner struggle and coming to realize that he doesn't want to lose emotions after all and become like Vger. Witness the power of that scene where Spock appears on the bridge for the first time and there is this outpouring of emotion from the rest of the crew (Uhura: "It's how we all feel, Mr. Spock...") And he just coldly turns away. Perfect!
      Yes, "Wrath of Khan" got deeper into their relationships, in a way that was enjoyable yet still realistic. And this sense of human warmth was the perfect counterweight to the hatred of the titular character. But that didn't make it better than the first film, just different. Of course, subsequent Star Trek films amped up the "palling around" and inside jokes to the point of absurdity, likely a turn-off for everyone but die-hard fans.

      There's a thing to be said about this specific movie though: It's downright impossible to tell who wrote the movie as it was finally shot - mainly because the movie was still *being* written while it was shot. Yes, the initial story treatment was by Alan Dean Foster, based on an idea by Gene Roddenberry, but it was then re-written into a TV script by Harold Livingston, and when they made it into a movie it was passed back to Gene Roddenberry whose close associates probably also had a hand in it and so on and so on...

    • @McShave
      @McShave 5 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      I noticed this too. There were loads of things almost mentioned, yet Mike doesn't do it. Like there's no way Mike doesn't know that the probe scene they talk about at length, was filmed in two parts. The left side is one take, then the special effect of the probe in the middle, then the right side is filmed separately. Sometimes when the image moves the two sides don't match up. I think he's purposely holding back his true Trek power level here to let Jim have his say.
      When talking about the sexuality of the film, he'll know about the novelisation Roddenberry wrote. The one with the sex rooms and the Enterprise is like one big hippie free sex commune. Kirk's mother had a love instructor or how the Deltans mindwaves make people want to fuck them all the time. That's why ilia has a bald head, to make herself look less sexy.

      @@rippspeck You can save yourself 150 hours of awful by skipping Voyager. DS9 is the best trek but of 150 episodes, only 80 are good or so. Curate your list. Next Gen has maybe 20 good episodes, but the rest are watchable just because the series has the rep it does. Skip S3 of TOS, it's all got this 'fan fic' vibe, but S1 and S2 are all legit.
