Yeah, I'm kind of puzzled by it now that I have the SS Pro. The coffee stir sized one doesn't make sense to me for use on its own; I can not keep embouchure at all while making tone. I suppose you could simply blow through it without producing tone to get more back pressure, as a way to ? I've read that exhaling with post-vocal occlusion can be therapeutic like singing is? So maybe if your voice is so shot that you need to be on vocal rest, you could just blow through it to get the soothing effect? I would want to see some kind of study before giving that sort of advice to a student, though. And then the other possible use for the little straw is as "fine tuning" to decrease the back pressure just a very tiny bit compared to the large straw? I suppose the combinations in order from least to most back pressure would be: All three straws, Large+medium, large+small, medium+small, medium, then small. And that's without dipping the end(s) underwater, which can give you even more gradations of back pressure. Update: I checked the singing / straw website again. They say that they intend you to use more than one straw if the resistance is too intense. So perhaps they assume you don't need a big straw at all if you can just use all three at once instead. Also: I am a baritone. Correct me if I'm wrong, but generally speaking, I'd expect that you need more breath flow than an soprano/mezzo soprano to successfully vibrate your vocal chords. So for that reason, it may be better for baritones and basses, and possibly heavier (voice) tenors to get the non-pro version or stick with a moderately sized "normal" straw. And one last thing! There is now a silicone singing / straw, the "sili" model, so if you want a different texture, that might be something for you to try?
Very very interesting and honest review. Thank you. I’m an opera singer , a tenor , so i never know which size of straw to use to increase my upper range. Between the three of them which one do you recommand me ? Thank you
For the upper register I personally find it easiest to use the middle straw, and if I need more volume then I would combine the middle and the smallest. Experiment around to see what works best for your voice!
Thank you so much for your honest review and suggestions ! I really appreciate it
love this review, all the other ones i could find weren’t relevant to me or they just used the straw for 10 minutes and said it was good
So glad you found it helpful!
