World Choir Games | Coaching Sopranos!
Yesterday I had the pleasure of working with the Takoma Academy soprano section! They depart for New Zealand soon for the World Choir Games. Y’all be ready!! These singers are coming in HOT! 🔥
Techniques in this video:
1) Larynx stabilization: the foundation to navigating your range (especially high notes!) in a healthy way
2) Rhythmic precision: in fast-moving passages, how do you get a group of singers to move as a single unit?
3) Resonant space: high notes need lots of space to live, and can affect the tone color of the overall ensemble (“golf ball” space will elicit a darker sound).
Any questions? Leave them down below! 👇🏻

The difference between choral warmups and vocal warmups comes down to the GOAL that you are trying to accomplish. The goal of an individual singer is different from the goal of a group of singers. Keep this in mind as you consider how to warmup!

    If you would like to explore Angelina's lower register I would suggest reacting to her singing How Great Thou Art! She sings it in her greatest influence, along with Billie Holliday, Elvis's key! She focuses on the verses and only sings the chorus in closing!

    Great analysis of Angelina's vocals. It's a shame the song was so cut and chopped. Even considering that you decided not to extend the length of your video too much, I think that eliminating so many parts of the song takes away the musical sense, which is also important for us to appreciate your work and Angelina's.

    Once in an art class, we were encouraged to listen to a piece of music and then try to paint the images it inspired. It was a stretch for most of us to take auditory sensations and turn them into visual images, but if I tried to imagine what was happening in the piece of music, the images definitely had color and personality. I don’t automatically see colors when I hear music, but I believe it is something we might be able to train ourselves to do with practice.

    I've never met anyone else who has synesthesia. For as long as I can remember, I've seen colors with both music and numbers. I just do. (I'm not a musician, just an appreciative listener.) I've been told that this ability is associated with high intelligence, though I have no idea if that's verifiable. For me, there's not a 1:1 association between a specific note and a color. Notes in the high ranges read as pale pink to me, and extremely low notes are dark brown. Colors in the middle range tend to alternate between red and blue. The color-note association is more triggered by complex instrumental music (like a piano concerto) than by pop/rock music. For numbers, the color association mostly pops up when I'm playing Sudoku.

  • @sarahgelberg
    @sarahgelberg หลายเดือนก่อน

    I've heard colors in music since I was taking piano lessons at the age of about ten. My mom happened to understand it, so when I mentioned "playing the pink notes," she had some idea of what I was talking about, and was able to explain what it was. I'm in my late 40s now, and I still hear color in music. Numbers also have colors for me--I see a rainbow every time I play Sudoku.

    This is so interesting! I was almost 30 when I realized that most people don't "hear" textures that they touch. That's the closest I can get to describing it... It's a sensation inside of my ears, and the more irregular a texture is the louder it feels.

    If you're a good choir and good musicians, the blunt way of doing it is more efficient.

    • @zagrizena
      @zagrizena 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not every choir is experienced enough to be able to fix themselves just by pointing out the error. As an absolute amateur I find it much more helpful for the director to use any of of the approaches mentioned above. Just pointing out the issue often leads to frustration and mounting tension, especially if it isn't resolved quickly and easily, as an individual singer often can't be sure, what the exact issue that the director hears is. At least from my experience it often happened this way when I tried my best to take the director's notes on board but was ultimately unsure whether it was effective or not. Sometimes other singers in the same voice had difficulties, but incessant repeating of the same phrase with the same instructions really did not help.

    By all accounts, she received no proper vocal training (except perhaps advice about not abusing her voice, this is the only time she screams, growls and squeaks with no holds barred). She attended an Oslo school of music and performance arts, but Angelina is apparently all herself, with an innate instinct about how to go about putting genuine emotion into any song, any genre, and having VERY firm ideas about what she wants musically - while always managing to honor the original artist of whatever cover she is doing. A true artist, a genuine prodigy. Apparently Angelina's arrangement of this performance was a "work in progress" throughout - but limited to the lyrics, the chord progression and the broad highlights (a sax solo here, a brass callback there). After all, who would try to dictate the music note for note to good jazz musicians like this band - they are, after all, the masters of improvisation!

    If we are to listen to the video (with the song) and also to your comments, then it would be important to increase the volume of the video until the song is at the same volume as your voice. This equalization is important, otherwise, if we here have to increase our volume to hear the song better (which is very low for us), when you start talking, our ears explode. It's very bad to witness a reaction like this, in which we are the ones who have to keep raising and lowering the volume all the time, or keeping it low, and then we are left without the music.
