5 Investment Watches About to Blow Up

  • The world has gone nuts for watches, it seems, with a surprising number bucking a trend of decades and actually going up in value. We’re seeing more and more demand for particularly desirable timepieces, and more and more timepieces becoming particularly desirable. With the main culprits having long since left Earth’s orbit, where will the investor’s attention turn next? Here are five investment watches that I think will soon be headed for the moon.
    Featured Watches:
    Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 15210BC.OO.A002CR.01
Patek Philippe Calatrava Travel Time 5524G-001

A watch is not, and never will be, an ‘investment.’ The only people that believe it’s an investment either A. Do not know the definition of investment, or B. Are attempting to make money from people by misleading about investing. Buying a watch hoping it will go up in value is speculation, not investing.

A watch is an investment as far as a handbag is an investment.
Not all watches are investments, such as not all handbags are investments.
However, there are investment grade handbags such as the Hermes Birkin and Kelly. The same goes to watches, there are also investment grade watches as evidenced by the current market.

Please allow me to play the devil’s advocate here.
Please prove that Nike/Apple/Tesla stocks will go up/down. Any and all investments are speculation. Some are merely more educated speculations.
If we look at property as an investment, then 2008 was an absolutely horrible time to invest in a “solid & proven” investment.
I’m not trying to bash anybody’s opinion, nor diminish the very good point you’re tying to make. I’m only trying to show a different way of reasoning.

It’s all a bunch of B.S.!!! Hyped up absolute nonsense. It’s become a comedy. A bunch of people with mega wealth getting introduced to watches through Instagram and their next “must have” item, paired with flippers jumping on board, more hype from publications, industry hype, and sheep mentality. It’s come to be not fun anymore. I’m just waiting for these people to realize they’re holding hundreds of thousands of dollars of non-precious metal, overhyped steel wristwatches, and realize it’s relative junk compared to what they’re paying. Then the prices will come down to earth again. They will get bored and move on to something else. I have no interest in being screwed over at these prices. The day will come when you can buy a stainless Daytona at retail again. All bubbles burst. I’ve just taken a commitment to not making any more purchases until those days are here again. My collecting is on hiatus and I’m enjoying the collection I’ve built over the 12 years prior to 2018/2019 (beginning of absurdity).

Was able to try on the A. Lange & Söhne in a Boutique when it just came out… fell in love… but even though I already own a pricey model (Grand Lange Mondphase, Pt), it seems I will never be on the list.
This is immensely frustrating… I wear my Grand Lange at every occasion because I love it. And the Odysseus would finally be a replacement for my daily watch (IWC Ingenieur).
I love watches and firmly believe that they should be worn & used, not locked away…

@@sidesauce What you say is true.
But I still find it annoying that I was offered to “maybe” be put on a waiting list if I purchased a different watch which was available.
I do not have the resources to shell out 40.000$ just to “maybe” put on a waiting list…. While the same model is fairly easily available for wealthy collectors who just pop ‘em into the vault for safe keeping.
No lie, I was later informed (at a different A. Lange boutique…) that another interested customer was also unable to get an order through because his “history of purchasing” was not extensive enough… we’re talking 4 (!) A. Lange & Söhne watches…
Nobody is making any more, or less, money on the sale, since all dealers (in different countries and continents) have all maintained that they ask the official price. But adhering to these sales tactics just spoil everything for “the rest of us”.
I don’t know, maybe random allotments would be better?

The Odysseus was poised to blow up the moment it's announced - the 1st sports watch from everyone's favourite brand, plus extremely limited production, and it's looking fine too. It's an open secret that the Ody will go up in status more prestigious than RO and Nautilus, because of scarcity, pricing, function, and craftsmanship. Now how many people can capitalise that? The 0.1 percenters who are loyal clientele of Lange, it's like a reward from the brand, not dissimilar to the MAD 1.

    A. Lange & Sohne maybe an excellent watch to invest in, because it appreciates significantly in value, but if I could afford to purchase one I would never see a return on that investment because I would never sell it. To sell something that represents such tremendous artistry and craftsmanship, for a profit, seems to be almost sacrilegious - like renting out the Sistine Chapel for a rave party because it is lucrative.

I can only hope that in some form as the popularity of watches grow, it brings to the fold future generations who appreciate them for what they are and not some future monetary sum.

Art work has always had a contingent of individuals who don't really appreciate the aesthetics of the art work, but just seek to profit from it. So it comes as no surprise that in the world of watches, where artistic mastery meets utility, a group will emerge who don't appreciate the beauty of watches and sees it as just something with a quick return on investment. The only silver lining to this is that incentivizes more newly emerging watchmakers to up their game, and as long as the true watch enthusiast gets in early on the nascent watch maker's products, there will always be plenty of interesting watches for someone with limited financial means.

They're a dealer, so what do we expect really Gavin? What's been revving up this tulip mania asset bubble has been the dealers and flippers. There is no actual shortage of steel Rolex, you can get one tomorrow, you'll just have to pay massively inflated prices for one. Plus this bubble has only been in play for about four years and really accelerated in the last two. So far it's been a letter perfect definition of an asset bubble, all that's left is the reset back to normal as dealers/flippers run for fear of losing their over extended shirt.
It already happened with the vintage end of things. In around say 2015 all the pundits and dealers were reckoning "vintage Watch X will hit five figures in a year". Only they didn't for the most part. That market is stagnant. Sure, go onto any of the well known sites and look at the vintage prices. Take a screenshot. Wait six months, go back again. Take another screenshot. 90% of the same watches will be there unsold.
Hodinkee are one of the few with the heft and name to sell the overpriced stuff to New York hipsters with manbags, but even there you can see discontent in their comment sections growing and the number of comments dropping. Ebay is another judge. Dealer prices at say 10,000 BIN, those rarer these days actual auction prices? 7000, even 5000, or less.

This is most certainly correct. But diamonds are certainly more portable, more valuable and easier to authenticate. That’s why the notion of watches as storage of value is kinda silly.

Ah, what a choice of riches (literally!). My favorites: The Vacheron Constantin FiftySix is probably my favorite! Beautiful dial & finishing. Second would be the Audemars Piguet. I am not a fan of the Royal Oak, but this is one I'd definitely consider. Third is the A. Lange Odysseus. I'm a fan of A. Lange and this is a beauty, IF I were a regular customer I'd be trying to get my hands one one. Fourth: The H. Moser Pioneer Centre Seconds. The watches are spectacular, the dial color incredible, and the finishing, to me, might just beat out all the others; when viewed under under a macro lens, it lacks very minor flaws I saw on some of the others (talking REALLY minor). Probably one of the best deals on this list. My least favorite was the Patek. The dial design just left me uninspired, and feeling I could have found a better dial design on a far less expensive watch. Again, just my opinion on these and whichever you like is the right one for you.

The finish on the counterbalance on the PP second hand looks terrible, maybe it's just the macro shots highlighting it.

Most new watches don't represent an immediate investment. There are of course exceptions, but given that in order to acquire these select pieces, you have to sit on a waiting list for sometimes years, it can hardly be referred to as flipping. Therefore, to realise any serious money, as with many investments, you have to be prepared to go long.

The sad truth is all this video does is stoke the imagination of those who purchase watches not as beloved timepieces, but on spec; upon which, once acquired, they are stashed away, never to be worn lest an errant scratch instantly devalue them. While those of us who might scrimp and save in the hopes of one day owning such a beautiful piece despair knowing that so long as they are hoarded by speculators, we must either hope for a total meltdown of the luxury watch market or continue to scrimp and save for another, oh say, 122 years, before we might actually realize the dream of strapping one on to our collective wrist.

I like all these watches. The Patek is ridiculously beautiful in the real world. Tom, the 7234 is wonderfully proportioned at 37.5 mm.
Unsolicited advice Don’t buy a watch you won’t enjoy (lots of ways to enjoy watches). Don’t buy a watch you can’t afford (priority on life’s fundamentals). A fair valuation of a watch collection should include psychic capital.

I don't think any of the 5 will be an investment watch. I think that in order to qualify a watch should be in steel, from a brand with reputation, produced in small numbers, preferably with integrated bracelet, and of course it should look cool and different. The Lange has potential, but honestly I think it looks ugly...

This video was ,sadly, predictable. I do respect and appreciate the effort and research it takes to produce a quality video. In my opinion the content was lacking, maybe flawed! These watches are admittedly ( by you) not attainable for most collectors, either for cost or lack of connection. Also the brands are the “chosen ones”, for good reason, and have manipulated the market (not a criticism). I would think that most “collectors “ already know the potential of these watches, either by brand, model, availability or cost (vs retail). It would be nice to see a video about watches that are attainable and hold all or most of their value. Another point, I am not sure the watch market can sustain this up-word pace! Also, there are watches that are comparable quality (except maybe A. Lang) that are available and affordable.
