Can I Make D&D Sewers Affordable AND Epic?

  • Sewer tiles are great for D&D, but I felt the existing options just didn’t give that 'epic fantasy' feel, and were a bit…small.
So I designed these tiles to work with my existing systems so you can build a huge, epic sewer with minimal extra effort or pieces!

    Anyway…
    MASK SAFETY
A few things we work with require good ventilation, a mask, or both.
    HOT WIRE CUTTER
When using a hot wire cutter, solid ventilation can be enough. Open windows, and a desk fan next to the cutter that blows towards the window is enough in most circumstances - but if you struggle with this, or can smell it consistently - I would recommend wearing a filter mask (links in the equipment list).
The white smoke given off by the cutter is primarily CO2 and water vapor, which are far less harmful than other common art products like aerosols and paint thinners (or hairspray). The toxic values are far less than wood-smoke, which contains tars, resins, creosote, and acetic acid.
IF you burn the xps foam, rather than melt it, it gives off black smoke. This is toxic. Make sure you turn the cutter off if not cutting, and try to remove foam stuck to the wire with some scrap foam, rather than letting it burn up.
    CUTTING/SANDING FOAM
When cutting or sanding foam, you want to be wearing at least a dust mask (though a filter mask will do) to avoid breathing in the dust. Always make sure to hoover up this dust once you're done.
    GROUT
Always wear a dust mask when using grout, ventilate the area, and hoover it up once it settles. It is basically cement, you don't want to be breathing it in!
On a side note, try to wash your hands in a bucket and throw the water out, rather than washing it down the sink. A small amount probably wont do anything, but in excess in theory it can cause problems (again, because it's basically cement!)
    GLUES AND SOLVENTS
Many things we use regularly (even home use) give off nasty fumes of some description - superglue, polystyrene cement (plastic glue), liquid latex, among others. For the most part, we don't work with these things for an extended enough period for this to be a problem, though following safety labels on products is of course important :)
As a general rule, I throw anything that 'smells' into this category - some are mostly harmless, but I aim for better safe than sorry!
Basic ventilation (opening a window) will usually be fine if working with them for a short period, but IF you intend to spend hours using one of these materials I would recommend solid ventilation, adding a desk fan, or even using outside.
    RESIN
Resin is a whole different beast, in that you want to be wearing a proper filter mask (not just a dust/particle mask) at all times. I used to use a half face mask, now I use a full face one because its not much more expensive and I prefer the extra level of protection.
    MAGNET SAFETY:
Don’t use around small children or animals, if ingested these can be dangerous. Never let very strong magnets slam together, especially thin ones. They can and will smash under a lot of force, and then become very sharp, highly magnetic shrapnel. Not good. Easy to avoid though, just take care.
NICKLE STRIPS/STEEL CAN TIPS AND SAFETY:
Nickel and steel is safe enough to use if you're reasonably careful, I used to cut most of mine from steel can lids with scissors, though now I use nice smooth nickel strips.
Made sure you're wearing thick gloves when cutting and handling, I use some woodworking gloves.
If you want to make doubly sure the metal isn't sharp, use a metal nail file along the edges to round it off.
    DIRT GROUT MIX RECIPE:
Full guide is shown in the basing minis video :)
Brown and black unsanded tile grout
Dirt cooked in the oven and filtered through a sieve. You want to grind this dirt up with some kind of improv mortar and pestle into smaller grains - it doesn’t need to be dust like the grout but should be otherwise pretty small. I strain it through a sieve to get rid of anything too big.
The ratio you want here is going to depend on the colour of your local grout
I just mixed in a bit of black at a time until the colour darkened down to match the original dirt.
    I ended up with about a 4:2:1 ratio of dirt:brown grout:black grout
I now add 1/2 a ratio (shot glass) of natural earth yellow pigment to make the reddish tint go away, without turning it grey by adding more black grout or grout mix. I added this to 12 dirt, 8 brown, 4 black grout. So its more like adding 1/8 of a glass to the minimum ratio shown above (4:2:1 then 1/8th of pigment)
    DIMENSIONS:
Templates available on Patreon here: www.patreon.com/posts/early-access-can-89105205
    Half width floor tiles
    3" x 1.5" x 0.5"
Foam blocks for empty tile curved jig pieces
1.5" cube. You can stack 1" foam with a small amount of hot glue and cut this down if you don’t have thicker foam.
    Fake depth brick wall
3" x 1" x 0.25" (I stamped a 1" thick piece of foam with the wall tile and trimmed it into 4 of these)
Fake depth fake height wall (on the bottoms)
1.5" x 1.5" x at least 10mm, but ideally no more than 1/2". Thick enough to be sturdy, thin enough to stack well.
    Styrene dams
3.5" OR 6.5" x 1.5". The most important thing is the right angles in the corner, check out this timestamped point in the water tiles video for more on me making them:

Wow, which video to choose. You've honestly helped our group step up the terrain game by epic amounts. But I get the most use out of the D&D Minecraft video. Thank you so much for everything you've given to us and the community! ❤

I've seen the magnet system before but you take it to the next level. I don't yet have the means to craft with the scope you do but hopefully you find it very fulfilling that many like me will be using your templates as inspiration for our own terrain systems. Making more for less, and hills are not small lumps have easily been the most helpful videos for me. I've been making terrain since back when the best terrain tutorials was Mike over at teranscapes (gone but not forgotten. He's not dead, he just doesn't do TH-cam anymore.) So I've seen the rise of bmc, wyloch, ttwc, devs and dice, and if course- you. I watch you all for different reasons, but those two videos actually fixed so many of my issues that it's safe to say that without them, i would be a much weaker crafter.

Welcome back! This is a great example of using modular pieces building a completely different, exciting terrain using base pieces and some excellent new additions. My favorite video is still Getting Started for someone who had never made any terrain before. Thank you for all your efforts!

Absolutely beautiful and well worth the wait.
I have searched high and low for DnD crafting of your caliber during the long downtime between your videos, and it simply doesnt exist. Matt, you are the best there is at what you do, and what you do is so very nice. You are an inspiration.
I am STILL planning on doing my own build after discovering your videos with the modular cities one. Problem is that my free time is ironically filled to much with DM'ing to be able to find the time to build it, but I think I have my eyes set on a reasonable pause in our campaign, and I can hand the reigns off to another friend and get started on what I expect will become an amazing passion project. I'm looking forward to it.
Looking forward to your next video, and really excited about all the different jigs and shortcuts you've been coming up with too make the process faster and easier.

Awesome modular build, as always! The channels could also be filled with molten lava for a smelter or clear water for an aqueduct, or left empty for a mine track or train rail. So many uses Matt, thanks for sharing, it was worth the wait!

This was amazing! My jaw hit the floor. Probably the best video to date. Prior for me was the scaffolding terrain video. Honestly that would be a cool add to this terrain. Even connect a cavern with scaffolding the leads to the sewers.

This is incredible - instantly subscribed for more. I appreciate how you finished the project and put out a single long form video rather than playing the algorithm games, but understand it's not super effective monetarily. I'd love to work on a similar project later in the year, so I'll definitely get stuck into the patreon at that point once I have some more free time again.
Seems like an absolute treasure trove of good information, and well presented - thankyou!

another excellent video, and really nice to see you in the feed again. there are lots of terrain crafters that i love to put on in the background while im doing my own creating, but your relaxing music, meticulous editing, and soothing tone make your vids a special treat - sit down, feet up, a beverage of some kind, and just watch like programmed television. excellent stuff.

My favorite video of RP Archive was the one where you showed how you made most simple things, but also showed how to do it cheaper. After watching that video, it got me thinking about ways to "cut corners" and save money and time when making things. I value replayability, durability, and feasability which most of your stuff checks those boxes! Good video and keep up the good work!
