    The Hunchback is the definition of “bring it” in mech terms. It can slug it out with machines twice it’s tonnage for short times and leave them crippled or dead. It is the urban mechs bigger, nastier older brother, scourge of close in fighting, and the Swayback variants range from mediocre to ungodly dangerous. But they all have the same soul that says “Bring it, let’s see what you’ve got.” The Quasimodo has a similar energy and is a worthy successor in that it will make even clan mechs cry up close and personal. On the defense, accept no substitute.

    • @Twilit777
      @Twilit777 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      The only Swayback that I think is mediocre is the -4N - the rest all have their place and are well-suited to their intended roles.

    • @bthsr7113
      @bthsr7113 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@Twilit777 The 4N is decidedly the least Hunchy of the Backs.
      The Quasimodo is nice, especially with its blueshield anti-PPC countermeasure, but the VSPL is just too much hassle and could be replaced by Clan PL.
      So my first choice would be to replace the three medium VSPL with 6 medium CPL. Better range, more consistency, and I can turn lasers on and off with more fine tuning to manage heat.

    Yeah, that poem fits the Hunchback perfectly. It is a mech that regardless of what situation it's in, even if there's a whole lance at it's back, it stands on its own.
    If it could affix a bayonet on its shoulder gun, I am sure it would.

    This is the poem my mother chose to define my father at his funeral, nearly a year ago. I have struggled with not having shared Battletech with him before he passed, abd he only got one year of retirement (to the day). I have been trying to pick a mech to paint and declare as 'his' since then.

      As a father, all of my children got a Hunchback painted and given as a Christmas gift when they were old enough to learn how to play. When my youngest son joined the USMC, I painted a Hunchie in Dress Blues and gave it to him when he graduated Boot Camp. When my brother died this year I bought and painted a MAD4A in a junkyard heme that matched his Mechwarrior character's ride. I agree that an Orion would be a good choice, but it's up to you. For my father, I'd have to go with a Highlander 432.

    The Hunchback is my go-to Medium.
    I love the Centurion. Hatchetman. Phoenix Hawk. Hell, I even love some of the Clan offerings in the weight-class.
    But nothing feels as tough as the Hunchback. I brawled down an Atlas in one.
    I was barely standing afterwards. Both arms were gone. AC20 got blown off but after it ran dry so that wasn't too big of a problem.
    I had to do it to gain entry into a clan/guild, and I'm proud of the Hunchback for allowing me to do that. The other guild members had a problem because I used the urban setting as cover, ducking in and out. They said it was sneaky shit, but the Hunchback was built for urban warfare. I was just utilizing what I knew about the mech and I didn't want the Atlas to engage me on an open field.
    But the pilot of the Atlas stuck up for me. We became good friends. He took on the bigger mechs, I kept tiny ones off his back. He passed away in his sleep, and not a day goes by when I don't think of him.
    I'm sorry, I think I got off-topic.
    Point is, the Hunchback has sentimental value to me, and I won't accept anything less than the -4G when it comes to that model.

    The Hunchback was my first medium mech, after the Thunderbolt was my first model. The -4G carried me through several campaigns and duels with friends. It doesn’t like to give up, even when it’s losing. The armor isn’t the heaviest and the speed isn’t the fastest, but it’s enough. The AC20 is the heart of the Hunchback, and what sets it apart from other succession wars mediums and gives it a purpose. I’ve won with it, I’ve lost with it, but I never stopped loving it. What a wonderful machine. I can’t wait to hear you talk about it.

      THE hunchback was the only mech I could afford to buy when I played MWO looooong ago. One of my funnest moments that I remember fairly vividly was me winning a match in a hunchback after killing a nearly full HP atlas in the car garage area. I had just killed a heavy mech in a desperate knife range fight when the atlas just straight up hello thered me. I managed to "disarm him" and work behind him via pillars. Took a bit of time as at least half my weapons were destroyed prior to the fight. Those were the last two on the enemy team so that felt good.
      All three variants provided me with a lot of fun and silly moments such as sniping with the ac20..

    Tex, I could listen to you quote Shakespeare or poetry any time. Mostly because you link it to something relevant and interesting to me that makes it all come together into something I want to hear.

    The Hunchback is, I think, the very definition of "Death or Glory" in BattleTech, it's the only mech as crazy as the Charger, but able to back up that crazy, at gun point no less.

    I can’t tell you how much I love watching Tex Talks Battletech, have watched episodes over and over and they have only gotten better with each one. With the new Mercenary kickstarter having finished I’m going to have a whole bunch more minis to paint while watching.

    I have had an unhealthy love for the Hunchback, since about 5 minutes into my first Battletech game many moons ago...
    I have been looking forward to this video, ever since you wonderful misanthropes of the BPL first teased that it was coming.

    Jumping on a bandwagon here! Tex! Your skills as a narrator/storyteller have been more then adequately proven over the last few years. While I need only to point to your subs/views for evidence, I'll also mention your the excellent pacing, enthusiasm and dare I say the "buckle up we ain't got time for BS". Everyone here calling for you to read poetry to us is right. For example Rudyard Kipling's If....that is a wonderful poem that has been performed by likes of William Hurt. You sir, would (I believe) provide the world with an amazing rendition of it!

    Ran a Hunchback in a Solaris grinder last weekend. He killed 3 mechs. Mostly by shooting damaged mechs with the big gat.

    Name a machine that always out numbered, out gunned, out classed, short of spare parts, replacement pilots, and fighting on world that are more ruins than city. A mech that has seen more galactic empires rise and fall, and still has their heads of trophies. And I will call it the hunchback two.

    This has me excited, because while I'm luke-warm on the Hunchback as a mech, it's the background history around it that I'm excited about, because this was a mech created during the Reunification Wars and specifically the Taurian Campaigns. This is going to be good!
