I use the hammock as my 'bench'. Meaning, I compress and stuff the top quilt using the hammock to stuff it into the sack (vs. the ground). I take the top quilt off, put it inside the hammock and repeat. That way, the quilts never come in contact with the ground. They are light weight and it wouldn't take much to tear one (like a thorn bush, branch, etc).
HG does amazing work don't they? I just ordered a -10° short Incubator and -10° custom short Burrow from them yesterday. They will both have 5" tall baffles and a whooping 20oz of down! With my 0° set I did -1° and the digital thermometer inside the Burrow read 86°, I could have probably pushed close to -10° with them. I imagine this new -10° set will be stupid warm and proly let me get closer to -15° or below with just regular mid weight base layers, wool socks, down booties, fleece gloves,my UGQ down skully and balaclava. The craftsmanship at HG is flawless and their production manager/ customer service guy Harry is beyond helpful, he took time out of his vacation last week to answer my emails and help me design my -10° quilt set. Since your both in Ohio i figured you'd eventually do a review of their gear. Great vid, keep em coming!
Hammock Gear makes amazing equipment! Been using one of their underquilts (Incubator 40) for over a year now, and it has been fantastic. Switched my overquilt to an Enlightened Equipment one, but my HG Burrow top quilts are still in my rotation. I simply like EE's quilt options a bit more, in the width/length department, for a taller (6'3") sonofabitch like me! Great gear, all around.
HG is right down the road from me. I picked up an under quilt and that cuban fiber tarp. They are both great products. I now hang from the trees! I've always been a ground dweller until last week.
I might have missed it but what model(s) is the top quilt/under quilt? Where can I buy?
Wow I absolutely did not believe he was going to be able to put them both in that bag that's crazy
I been using my hammock gear quilts for years now and love it! Glad to see you finally start using ultralight gear
Lovely gear. Personally I prefer to not compress, well stuff, hard into stuff sacks. Instead I use a bit larger lightweight waterproof sacks to protect the sensitive items such as UQ/TQ and whatnot, shove them into the bottom of my packback and then do the compression by filling the pack with the rest of the gear. That results in far less "dead space" between the still soft items. Imagine filling your pack with bowling balls, lots of space between them that are harder to fill with smaller items.
Always a pleasure to look at your videos and enjoy the depth of your knowledge. Salutes from Sweden! O7
Nice set up. Light is the way to go when hiking long distances.
Have used Hammock gear top and underquilts for some time! Love that they are offering some cheaper modules.
Dave if your seriously considering getting into ultra lite gear i recommend the 60 liter Granite Gear Crown 2 backpack. You will like the colors, ruggedness and the only 2 pound weight.
Wow. Would not have believed it if I hadn’t seen it 😮. Nice.
Which HG combo is this? Can you provide the specifics?
Congrats on the sweet hammockgear. I have a few of their quilts and they keep me nice and warm.
Is this underquilt and top quilt combo available anywhere for sale yet? I've checked Hammock Gear's website and dont seem to be able to find it.
My DD Traveler Hammock has a double layer bottom that forms an envelope, open on one side, held closed with velcro. Into that envelope I placed a $7 sleeping pad. On top the pad I placed a $10 reflective bubble type windshield shade. Used a $65 surplus Military Sleep System in the hammock & slept warm as toast all night.... during an ice storm. $82 for a warms nights sleep on the coldest night I've ever spent outside. How much are these two quilts?
...depends on what you mean by "how much". How much money does it cost? A lot more that a used mil-spec sleep system that in it's entirety, is pretty dang warm, (3-piece If I remember correctly). How much volume does it takes up in your backpack? An entire cold & wet weather hammock sleep system, (extreme weather tarp, insulation, hammock, suspension) is round-about less than half the size and weight of a just that military surplus sleep system by itself, if done right. Sleeping bags are a nightmare trying to get into inside a hammock. I used one for many years myself. Now my entire hammock system takes only the first bottom 6-8 inches of my USMC ruck and I'm good to about -10 to -15 deg. a few more pieces of gear and I can go colder. What you gain in being less weight and volume is lost by down's expensive cost, for sure. You can sleep as warm and dry using gear that is cheaper, but it usually weighs more, bulky to pack or has more synthetic insulation to compensate for similar temperature ratings... which really doesn't amount to much if you camp next to the vehicle you brought your camping gear in. Compare that instead to people who are serious about saving weight such has thu-hikers and backpackers who walk with gear for miles. Down is notably their best choice and usually is. They're pretty keen on carrying less weight. Down has the inherent characteristic of being expensive, but it's stuff of legend when it comes to insulation. It has to be "grown", harvested, cleaned, separated by loft ratings, etc... and that is what makes it so expensive.
Tnx for sharing, never actually seen something like this before, looked very comfy
Hammock gear is outstanding stuff. I love mine. Stormcrow is a great guy.
I think that was the first video I have seen of yours, wearing Jeans... I checked the link to Amazon and didn't see these items. Where can I go to find these?
CanadianRockiesBushCraft Alberta check out Hammockgear.com
Holy moly! When I was watching It and was thinking there's no way! but it all fit. Good product Dave! just may have to invest in one of those my friend!
After 2 fistfulls I was like, "nah"...but it all fit. I'm impressed.
Slick setup.
How would you compare this to DD and Hennessy hammocks? A comparison would be great.
Really nice
I would love to own those but i suspect they are well out of my price range.... :(
I currently own a Snugpak UnderQuilt, The slightly older version not the newer thinner colder version
and a DD TopQuilt both go in my DD Frontline Hammock and I have the DD 3x3 tarp, I would love to loose some of the weight, I have a much lighter weight Hammock but it dosen't have a bug net.
I use the DD Hanging Kit for my hammock system too.
Hi Dave
Great video well demonstrated
Are they for sale in your shop and ship to U.K.
Ps great to meet you at the bushcraft show over here
Quilt, something I'll never use in South Carolina because it never gets cold anymore. Hammock all day everyday.
the thumbnail looks like you are holding a giant hand carved wooden watering can, im actually disappointed it wasn't! i really want to try hammock camping though.
Hey Dave I'd like to see you make some homemade root beer with stuff gathered from your local area
It's hard to beat for compatibility and light weight.
That looks comfortable.
Nice.... thanks for share!
where can I get the down bags? and what are they rated for?
hammockgear.com
Where on the Self Reliance Outfitters website does one find these quilts for sale?
Love that Hammock Gear.
What a great hammack.
What degree are those?
Cory E
I was going to ask also. I'm guessing 20*F
Hammock Gear is good for the tarp but as for quilting Loco Libre has the edge as of right now. The baffling on a Carolina Reaper is well superior to the Hammock Gear baffle style.
Nice
Thinken my feet and ankles will still get cold and at my age thats make for a real slow morning
What's that S looking thing?
S biner - looks like a plastic model. Manufacturer is Nite-Ize.
So i guess you would use the quilts in Lou of sleeping bag????
I just recently got the outdoor vitals pod system. it can be used as an under-quilt, or you can zip it up around the hammock. basically eliminates the need for an over-quilt. it can also zip all the way up, and be used as a regular sleeping bag. It's rated for 20° and weighs about 2 lb. I love it.
Dave u still do the school
At least 14 Classes a year plus traveling for away classes
I'd probably just use a mummy sleeping bag
it's almost like a magic trick... watching all the material get stuffed away
I stopped at the stuff & hit subscribe because out of many videos, you stowed us the stuff. It is important to see how an item packs. I do the same with stuff when I can, that way people can tell.
Too bad I'm allergic to goose down.
Cool.....ugh I mean. ..Warm
Harry potter level stuff sack
Wow nice. But man for a second I heard the words fat man in a little coat. Or got to thinking if my shirt was good down I could finally wear a large shirt again. But then naw ide have to be good down to fit. Lol. But omg they fit that's to crazy. Good job goose down. But all fun aside that's awsome. Now that's to use when it's cold out side right. Ide like to have just camping I don't have a good blanket when over night fishing which I get cold easy and being a big guy don't no how but I'm already wanting a jacket. But thanks wish they had a light blanket throw to use while I'm setting in my wheel chair out fishing. But I'll check on it. Have a good week god bless
And that's how you spend $900 dollars
It's actually more like 500 bucks for both (20 deg temp version) and it will be the best 500 bucks you have ever spent in terms of warmth, weight, and packability
John Godwin make it easy- take mummy bag, do hole in legs compartment, pass hammock through and save your money, I'll do it for age's and happy enough
