Honda has consistently built the greatest touring bikes in the world paired with the worst suspension possible. These guys have made an incredible business out of correcting the situation.

Pre 2018 GW are better in the suspension department in this instance ya! More travel in the front and more precise preload control in the rear...

Sorry.... the previous Goldwing was exactly as bad... In fact, the rear shock is the same from 2001-2025.

Thought about trading my sport touring FJR1300 for one of these bottom riders for two years. The FJR has a 6 position continuous pre-load adjustment. 17 clicks of rebound damping and 21 clicks of compression damping for the front forks. Infinite combinations. GW has no front preload, nil or none compression or rebound damping. To me, it's unbelievable built this way.

"Sport" Tourers are configured differently that "Touring" bikes by nature. All we do is suspension, and over 15+ years of Goldwing specific suspension service, and more than 5,000 bikes upgraded, less than 6 people have asked for damping adjustable suspension for a Goldwing. There's no demand for it.

Max ...... Just picked my new 2018 Tour DCT . I was hesitant to buy knowing that there were issues with the suspension and the GPS , but went ahead with the deal after reading a lot of forum posts and watching a considerable number of videos . There were some Gold Wing riders who were saying that the upgrade would not be necessary until the bike had maybe 40 or 50 thousand miles , so I thought I would get several years of riding before ever needing to do the upgrade . WRONG ! On my first ride , after I had rode maybe 10 miles , I noticed the bike was bottoming hard in the rear shock , enough that it was jarring the crap out of my back . After about 35 miles , I stopped to check the suspension setting which was “one up” . I set it to “two up” and headed back home . I really could not tell any significant difference. The bike was bottoming hard and my back was taking a beating . For reference , I weigh 180 and 6 ft. Tall . I woke up the next morning with a sore back . I also have a 2017 Indian Springfield and have never had a problem like this . There is no doubt in my mind that this bike bottoms out hard and definitely needs different shocks and springs . I live in Texas , maybe I can get Fred Harmon to do the upgrade . Why do some riders seem to have no problems and praise the suspension , and others like myself know on there first ride that there are issues ?? I will ride my Indian until I can get the suspension updated .

Just traded a road glide ultra for a Goldwing and I can tell you the gw rides much smoother than the hd. We ride two up all the time and find the gw more comfortable. The hd isn’t bad at all, rode them for years so long as your model is not lowered as in a special. Those models lose an inch of travel and don’t ride nearly as nice as a standard.

Donald Remington I have a 6m. You will notice that my original post is a year old. I have since put 18,000 miles on it so I can give you a better perspective now. I’m 68 years old and my needs may be different from yours but the 100 pound weight reduction is important for me. Going from a HD touring model in seeking a lighter bike, the alternative was a Softail which, to me is not a good bike for two up riding. The Goldwing is much more sophisticated and complex. Maintenance can be an absolute nightmare on the GW so if you do your own maintenance be aware that changing an air filter is an all day job. If you are the type that lets a dealer do your work, be prepared to pay big for routine things. Don’t think that a stock GW will fit everyone, you will probably change the seat and the bars. Storage is less than on a HD and lighting on a full dresser is better than the GW especially at the rear. Performance is better on the GW in all aspects other than carrying capacity and being affected by cross winds and big rig blow by. In that instance the HD is more planted. I live in Florida and the great reduction in heat coming off the engine and exhaust is a wonderful thing. My biggest issue with HD was the dealer network and how they handled service and warranty issues. There are many independent certified shops that can work on your HD but not so with a GW. Don’t buy into the myth that GWs don’t break. The drivetrains are bullet proof but I hear of many electrical issues that require big repair bills to fix. Honda isn’t any better than HD in honoring warranty items. Hell, if you ask Max MCalister, half the bike is inadequate and needs to be replaced! So the question might be, would I do it again? My Road King was simple, reliable and comfortable.

Hello. What years or years of Goldwing would you recommend for someone who can’t afford the 2018? Thanks in advance. I was told by a couple of policemen that they had transmission problems on some years some times after a while? They said be sure and test a used Honda before buying for transmission problems. And a comment...all that money and suspension problems? What a drag. I am about 210 with gear on, so a problem with just about any bike no matter how expensive. So far has stopped me from buying a bike? Seems that whether I get a cheap one or expensive one I will have to spend money on suspension?

The suspension won't change until they remake the entire model which won't be before 2028 typically. Since you live so close it is definitely best to bring it to us. It's about $3000 for everything out the door. We can do any other accessories you want at the same time while the bike is apart, so don't have anything installed at the dealer! Bottoming is usually defined as the coil completely compressed and can't travel any further. I'm not sure that this is happening when your zip tie hits the rubber bumper. I've heard that there are preload settings for rider and rider with passenger and others. So maybe something clever is happening. Quick test. Get 2 friends over 250 lbs. and see if the coils are fully compressed when they sit on the bike. Look at the zip tie. You can even play with the preset modes. Sometimes designers are sneaky.

A spring that is compressed fully until the coils touch is called "Coil binding".
There is NO SHOCK ANYWHERE that has a spring that coil binds when the shock absorber bottoms out. PERIOD. All shocks are designed to bottom out long before the coil binds.
But you didn't know that. Now you do.

I have bottomed out bikes over potholes and it is quite noticeable. I just have a hard time believing Honda made such a bad mistake. My Honda CB1000R doesn't bottom out in normal riding and I have also done the ziptie test.
