  • Food and drink are a big component of many social interactions and help to bring people together. So what happens when you are following a specific medical diet that excludes you from sharing in this same experience with others? In this video, I share more about how this has been a bit of a challenging aspect of using ketogenic therapy, and also what I'm doing to address those challenges.

I have been gluten free for 10 years and I promise social gatherings get easier with time. People know I will always hang out but I'm the weird one drinking water 🤷‍♀️

Yeah - Perfect commentary. Dietary choices are perfected over time. Keto is easy and gluten free is easy by just getting better as one perfects our knowledge base. Remember: How we eat 95% of the time is what rules. Save 1 or 2 spots per week for social gatherings. There is no reason to not socialize. There are always meat and vegetables. When someone offers you stuff you say "Thanks", and then you can put it down somewhere and forget. Don't be a victim.

It seems there are so many folks now days that eat various diets because of various reasons. For example: I don't eat gluten or sugar. My daughter doesn't eat dairy, gluten or meat. So, meals are planned around these things. I know vegans, vegetarians, etc. When the weather is nice you and hubby can have a picnic date !! With friends I would just explain you are on an eating plan for health reasons and will bring your own dinners. If they are real friends they will accept an explanation!! I admire your dedication to your health !!! You are a trailblazer that just might have a cure for many mental health issues !!!!

I'm following a strict diet for my brain fog which conventional Drs were not able to diagnose or treat. I took not being able to eat out or eat socially as a worthy price, because my symptoms are so debilitating. Have always been happy to prepare my own food for any occasion, as I do every day. But for many of us who choose to eat this way due to their health conditions, friends and family attack our choices, distance themselves or withdraw financial support as they're not able to understand, and for the chronically ill the stress of that can easily trigger health setbacks. It's heartbreaking when someone is too sick or financially disadvantaged to escape a living situation where that is going on. Like you said, food really is an emotional topic. It's great you have the capacity and support to navigate the social implications of your diet change in healthy ways and I love that you're raising awareness!

I’ve become strict vegan to keep my cholesterol in check. This affected going out with folks. I was also tired of people asking me, “Aren’t you hungry?” “You’re so skinny.”
It is difficult. I agree. But over time it’s gotten easier. Some friends have prepared one dish just for me!
You have to do what you have to do. And you don’t need to explain.
    Hang in there.

Veganism is an ethical philosophy against the exploration of animals and not a diet. So the main reason anyone should go vegan is for the animals. So think of the animals anytime you find veganism difficult as the animals in factory farms are the ones who have it difficult. Great your vegan keep it up, the animals love you for it. You have a good heart.

@@a.w.j.pilgrimIt's actually immoral to push a vegan diet, because it hurts people greatly in the long-term, and God commanded people to eat meat after the Great Flood (presumably because none of the plants that had provided the super proteins / fats survived it).
The absolute worst advice that you could give to someone with schizophrenia is to go on a vegan diet. The human brain is the only organ in the body that is made almost entirely of fats, so targeting that organ with malnutrition will only cause greater deterioration to an already damaged brain.
In other words, it's evil from any angle you look at it. A few specialty diets have benefits, at least some of the time, but most of the radical (unbalanced) diets are manifestations of eating disorders, and are therefore just presentations of mental illness - often of the collective hysterical kind.
This may be a little off topic, but I'm always annoyed by the hypocrites who morally grandstand with their smug sense of superiority, as they hurt the people around them by encouraging them to unwisely sin as they do. Nature worship is the realm of the witch religions and the pagans, whereas the people of God are given dominion over it and commanded to consume it. I've done enough health research to know which pathway leads to benefits and which one leads to catastrophe in the long-term, and I've had to conclude that God knew what he was doing.

I don’t really comment often but this time I feel you. I have really strong allergies that allow me to trust very few restaurants. One contamination and I’m off to the hospital with an anaphylactic shock. How I’ve learned to get around it is simply bringing my own food to any restaurant and just going for the company. You don’t necessarily have to share the same meal in order to socialize. Plus I make the things that I can eat and I offer them to my friends and family. I think it’s a way to bring loved ones closer, in order to understand each other better and better every time. I bring my own food to my friends’ houses. I am not vegan, but allergic to eggs and dairy…but I still bake 😂 and with a little practice I fool my friends and tell them the Sacher I made is vegan only after they ate it 😅 and they usually can’t tell. We laugh about it. If you can’t make it normal, make it special ❤️ let them into your world with the joy that cooking brings. You love a keto snack you can’t stop eating? Share it with your friends and family! They will feel like you are actually bringing closer to you❤️much love 😘

I'm coeliac and find the (lack of) social aspect much harder than the actual diet. Some people are very accepting and accomodating, and others seem to think that hanging around gluten is more important than hanging around me. You learn who your friends are. Sometimes if a group is meeting at a restaurant I will eat beforehand and just have water or tea, which was very awkward at first but I'm much more comfortable with it now. I've also found a handful of restuarants that I can eat at.

it is true that people have strong opinions on nutrition and it is sometimes tiring to listen to poeple when you just want something to eat that fits your diet.
but it gets better. at some point they will stop and you will also learn to say "i just want to eat, it's nothing personal".
i learned to prepare for every trip i took and visit that i made and over time i found new ways to prepare: i found a search engine specifically finding restaurants with my diet or offerings that can be altered.
i got better in asking for accomodations in my orderings. friends got used to my diet and some learned how to cook that way and others even eat the way i do. some friends and family considered my diet "extreme" but over the years they witnessed that i didn't die of malnutrition and they could relax again ;)
all the best to your journey!

As I have had rapid cycling bipolar I need wellness with meds before I change my diet in a way that may only create more stress. Environmental Stressors are wide and varied and can include diet as a stresor. Environmental Stressors are the most significant impact on mental health at present, ie from the data. You are trying to look at the stressors, especially food, diet, exerecise, and most likely sleep, are you also doing psychological therapies. Remember don't let food also stress you out if you eat something not quite according to your diet. Remember joy with others is also essential, yeah? Take it easy.

Interesting and honest. I did keto for 2.5 years for overall health/ weight loss mainly, and used to take home-made macadamia buns with me when out for coffee w friends! When I came off the diet one friend said "thank god we can go out for coffee n cake again"... I think for people not in a relationship/without kids n family around them the social aspect is even tougher. Many people with SMI are single and a social life is also important for good mental health. People with SMI can feel different enough as it is, stigma etc, so not sharing food or avoiding social events that involve food is another disadvantage. My family member with SMI decided they couldn't sustain keto for this reason. But the diet is clearly working for you Lauren and its been fascinating to follow. The meds are no picnic either, so this non-med option is groundbreaking and hopeful. I am hoping longterm the research re mental illness being a metabolic disorder might lead to safer alternative treatments for people who can't sustain keto. Your most recent video about getting a little complacent is also interesting and honest. Thank you. When I intermittently, and then definitively, stopped keto because I found it limiting, there was no major risk. But if people with schizophrenia or bipolar stop, or just get less strict on it, the repercussions could be life-threatening.
Will there be enough interest from pharmaceutical companies to fund research into possible ways to make this regime any easier?

Love the way Maria Emmerich says../ socializing can not be around food but about spending quality time with others. That helps me a lot specially when hen I go to church and they only serve donuts. I just say no I’m fine with a smile. Everybody has a choice and I choose what I eat. Your family and friends are going to get in use, those who really cares and love you. Sometimes what happens is people around you get tired of hearing about something new and want to go back to the way things were. Because that is who they liked in the first place.
Its like that lame joke: how do you know a person is vegan or owns a Tesla? They will tell you.
When things change around your social circle people will notice a difference. Edmonton has a lot of fatty food places. There is a liquor store and pizza/burger/donair place on every street corner.
So keep doing what you want to do, no matter what people will always criticize you, people change and when they don’t like it, it means you were better off anyways.

I've had to follow medical special diets for over 30 years so I know exactly what you're talking about. Pretty much everyone who follows special diets for any reason deals with this, so a lot of people have come up with a lot of strategies maybe some will work for you- probably some won't. First- it is valid for you to choose to eat however works for you, you're not imposing anything on anyone else, you don't owe anyone else an explanation, and it's ok if other people feel awkward. Your health is important and you have a right to do what you need to do. Personally, I've found that I simply tell people ahead of time in situations that might involve food that I have special needs and will be taking care of my food for myself. I've learned that if people insist on wanting to make something diet compliant for me, it usually won't work out unless they really know the special diet well, so I tell them thank you for the thought, I really appreciate it, but it's complicated so I'll just take care of it. This might mean that I bring my own food, eat before or after, etc. I'm nice but firm and then move the conversation on. Personally, I'm fine with being asked pretty much anything about my medical stuff, but if you don't want to talk about it just change the subject.
I still go to dinners, restaurants, etc, and just either bring my own (even to restaurants if I have to) or don't eat but still take part in the conversation. If I'm upfront and don't act awkward about it (I've been doing this for so long) people are usually not too weirded out or get over it quickly. I haven't eaten at all for the last 10 years (fed through IV) so that makes it weirded but easier. At restaurants I just say "nothing for me"- if they kind of insist, which almost never happens, I just say that I have a medical condition. You DO NOT need to explain yourself to anyone. They can deal with feeling awkward- it won't kil them, and you deserve to go out and be social whatever you eat. If someone is weird about eating my family's food, we plan non-food things. It's oik for other people to think what my family eats is weird. It kind of is, but we need to follow a lot of complicated dietary restrictions, most are things most people have never heard of. When my kids were little and went to birthday parties I would tell the parents, even if I didn't know them, that my kids had serious food allergies (or sensitivities, whatever that person could understand) and that I would be sending their food with them. It turned out that a lot of the kids liked my special diet food, even if they could eat anything, so I would send the whole cake if the parent wanted. At their school I knew what a lot of the kids could or couldn't eat so I would send "alternative" cupcakes, etc, that all the kids with special food needs could have if their parent wanted.
TL:DR You have the right to eat whatever you need to or want to. Other people can deal with it. Do what you want to do and have fun anyway. I guarantee you that there are people you know who will need to follow a special diet at some point to and will deeply appreciate having seen you handle the situation. Not saying this to dismiss your feelings- you're right on that food is central and your feelings are real and matter.

I eat a burger with no bun. Unbreaded (naked) chicken wings with dry rubs. Salad with grilled chicken. Steak with salad or vegetables. And extra butter with everything!!! Breakfast is easy with eggs/bacon/sausage/smoked salmon. I add salt and butter to my coffee and tea... A few people who have been with me when I order have tried it and say that they love it! Lots of restaurants know exactly what we are up to. We also bring food with us when we socialize if it is going to be an issue. I love seltzer water or club soda with some lime or lemon.

So so true … I can’t go out to eat anymore , I’m often just not eating at all amongst friends . I sort of get inner turmoil that they can all just eat & not think of the ingredients or quality of food .
I wish I could be that way … just eat & not think about it . I’ve been down rabbit holes … watching a cook pour rancid seed oil all over a grill surface while using poor quality food on a gluten sub bread … sigh .

I live in a smaller city than Edmonton, and I have found that most restaurants in Alberta have their menus and nutrition facts online. I get excited to go to Edmonton because the options in the city are far more greater than a smaller town. (lots of keto friendly choices on the menus) When planning to eat out I plan what I am going to eat before hand and put it in Cronometer app, so to have no mistakes for the remainder of the day. I find pre planning takes away the barrier of eating out in restaurants with friends and family. I also do girl trips regularly to Banff and Canmore. They also have lots of good options in restaurants and stores to support a Keto diet. When I go with friends we go all go to the grocery store together and purchase our breakfast/lunch items. Then I only need to worry about eating out for one meal per day on the trip. I have also adopted that when spending time with family. Thank you for being such a great inspiration.

It may be restricting on what you can eat and how your social situations are organized, but if ketogenic diet helps release the potential within you to be a truer presence, then I believe it could be helpful.
That doesn't mean it's not a huge shift without loss; but it is a tradeoff, or rather a shift in how you express and share who you are. To me, it feels more like a “shift” in hoe and where you express your social ness, instead of a “divide”.

I've been vegetarian for over 25 years - obvious things are a lot easier now but even back in the day when I could only have a few sides when I went out for a meal, so I never missed out on eating out but I might be eating some odd things.
A general observation about medical keto - it won't be a magic bullet with no side effects (because perfection doesn't exist in our reality). It's a medical intervention, it will have side effects in the same way that pharmacutical interventions have side effects (just different ones). It's about deciding whether the side effects are worth the positives. For example, I think the high cholestrol is often handwaved away by proponents of the diet. I'm not sure there are enough long term studies of keto diets and cholestrol to say a) it's a rare side effect and/or b) it's not significant. That could be true, but it might not be true - we'll find out hopefully in the next few years or even decades. But of course, it's worth remembering that if it can put serious illnesses in remission - then it might be worth the risks even if we were to find the high cholestrol is a cardiac risk factor.

I started Keto 9 years ago for weight loss, I did strict 20g total carbs for a year then adjusted a bit. Steak houses are great, my go to is Ribeye with steamed broccoli and extra butter. Lettuce wrapped burgers are great I love Five Guys and look at nutrition guides before you go out. I haven't found a place I can't eat something even if it's just eggs or a very custom salad. And I know you're Canadian but be a little more forward and ask and adjust for sauces and dressings. If you feel you need to explain just say you need to avoid sugar for medical reasons. They'll just assume you're a diabetic.

I don't care to be friends with people who can't accept basic differences like this. it's just food. There doesn't have to be a social aspect to it, and I would prefer to be with people who don't decide there has to be.
If someone chooses to judge me for my life decisions (especially health ones), or misconstrue my intentions so that they get offended, that is not a friend to me.
I focus on just having a few people who empower me and help me grow, who can also give me a not-emotionally-biased check-in with beliefs as needed. I reciprocate the same.
People who make an issue out of matters like this are simply not worth it to me. Doesn't matter if it's friends, family, etc. . I value mutual respect of needs, and various other things, more than that.

I have avoided going out too like you, Lauren! I can eat burgers though if they say how much it weighs and if I bring my own ketchup. Of course I eat the rest of my macros at home for that meal lol. Fast food burgers work too because they post nutrition info online. Hopefully as keto catches on there will be more keto options available at restaurants and stores. I tell people I'm doing keto for mental health and I honestly don't know what they think (besides a very opinionated family member who doesn't buy this keto thing) but I've carried on. I just remind myself that I'm doing a medical diet and I must commit if I want to keep tapering my medicine. I can't focus on what everyone thinks but I appreciate their understanding and lack of judgment. The truth is what I tell people but once they push me to know if I will keep taking medicine I learned to validate their concerns but not answer their question because it is a private decision. I wish I had some tips for navigating social situations but it helps to surround yoursellf with understanding/open-minded individuals. Several members in my family have been on different diets so I don't believe they think anything is unusual. I look forward to the Rob video!

8:14 i found this to be the case in my household. I was on keto and i have ptsd & PCOS. Not only did keto help me mentally but it helped me lose weight. It was hard at first but in time i found that my sugar cravings, bloating, brain fog, tiredness & irritability was non existent. My fiance and his father decided to go vegan and felt the health benefits of that. My fiance wasnt convinced that keto was good for me cus of the cholesterol intake but i wanted to stay. After some more persuading i folded and tried vegan.
Honestly i hate it. I am miserable & tired all the time, irritable and endlessly bloated. Nothing feels satiating and im constantly hungry for more carbs, the complete opposite of how I felt on keto. I also gained triple the weight 😅
I want to go back to keto 😅
Honestly some things work for people whilst others dont. He gave me all the facts n data on why vegan is the best but my body has said otherwise.
Your journey has been inspiring, i wish you all the besr with keto.

Veganism is growing exponentially. Whilst it was nearly impossible to source good food options when out, over the last decade or so, increasingly great vegan options are now available.
Hopefully progress in the context of mental health will also follow the same pattern and food venues start to introduce keto alternatives to the mainstream. The more people who support this medical intervention, the greater the potential for this to occur.

Yes, it can be tricky. I ordered BBQ meat (without the BBQ sauce) at a restaurant when I went to Boston recently. The waitress thought it was really interesting that I’d only be eating meat, but I think they also marinated their meat in addition to using BBQ sauce. I think the marinate had sugar in it because my ketone registered at .7 when I got home. They are slowly rising back up.
I find the safest bet is to get a burger with no bun. It’s just ground beef, sometimes a piece of melted cheese on top, and I ask for 2 pieces of bacon on top of that. Do they not serve burgers at restaurants in Canada? It’s a pretty common meal in the USA.

I was really interested to hear what you've been going through... And I may absolutely have some lessons that you might like to employ (or at least work towards).
For context, our firstborn (first grandchild on BOTH sides of the family) developed insanely intense anaphylaxes (the scale here in Australia measures 1-15, with anything 9 or above getting an instant EpiPen prescription - or daughter was scoring in the mid 40s!! Literally orders of magnitude off the proverbial Richter scale).
Australian culture - multicultural as it is - is *ABSOLUTELY* centred around food and social gatherings...
She literally COULDN'T eat anything commercially prepared. She couldn't eat anything that was sold in a packet (with a few rare examples). Hey diet - especially until she was well into her teens - was SUPER restricted.
And yet we had a vibrant digital life with friends, family, and loved ones.
Yes, it looked different to the way most OTHER people did things... But she's 19, now, and still alive! So it was worth it.
Educating friends, family and loved ones can seem overwhelming, but it's so necessary. So is policing strict boundaries, being ok to let certain loved ones (who don't understand, or don't WANT to put in the effort to accommodate, or flat out don't believe you) slide out of your life...
This is going to be a HUGE process... I reckon you might need the support of those who have gone before to share what worked for them, and more importantly, what mindset was required.
Hit me up if you ever want to run anything by me.
I'll bet there are others out there, like he, who you can call on fur wisdom and example.
