You have this down to a science, I always enjoy watching you make these, you make them look easy to make. I know there's a lot of work in making a chessboard, and I am sure once you've found out what works you are able to eliminate extra steps in the process. Keep up the fabulous work, another work of Art.
I just finished a board for a client, Ebony and white oak playing surface , walnut border inlaid with curly maple and Tiger wood, This board caught my eye beautiful work as always Mike.
I like chess much, and I do enjoy seeing woodworking. I've seen lot of videos of the making of chessboard. This video is the best. The details, the music, the chessboard, they all are masterpieces 👍👍👍👍 Thank you for sharing this one 👍👍👍👍
I have just tried my hand at my first chess board and turned my own pieces. I gained confidence to do this from watching your videos. Yes I still learned so much as I made my own. I made some mistakes in material selection, but my board cam out amazing. Everyone who sees it expresses amazement. That sir comes from you showing me what a board to be proud of looks like. Thanks for your help
Glad that the Air Force Academy football emblem was included! Back in the day (1965-1969) we would wager our bathrobes on the outcome of the game, but we only played Army or Navy on alternate years back then. It wasn't until 1972 that the three service schools played each other for the trophy. As of 2021, I believe the win record for the Commander-In-Chief's trophy stands at AF 20, Navy 16, and Army 10. Great looking boards Mike!
Your workmanship inspiring. I start life as student at technical school. I stumbled on your TH-cam and will undertake your design/build as a foundation of the project. Thank you for your share. Bob Zielinski.
The Bob Ross of woodworking! It finally dawned on me who your voice or more your calm, and easy delivery reminds me of - Bob Ross, the Happy Painter! Great video. I also echo a previous reader and would like to see how you sneak up on your miter cuts, corrections if it is not a perfect 90 degrees, and how you correct if you cut too short.
Spectacular build. Not only is the attention to detail in teh craftsmanship truly next-level, the video documenting your work is so enjoyable to watch. Inspiring to say the least!
Looking at Mike's presence made me fall asleep, he's so cool calm dude! Music is just top notch ! I love Bach and was able to play this piece to its halfway until my fingers-brain connection said NO! xD Chess Boards are art!
As a Marine myself, I can't imagine a retired Marine not wanting and Eagle, Globe and Anchor on that board somewhere, maybe next to his initials? I don't know, it just doesn't seem right to me... Regardless, that is beautiful work sir. I am making my first chess board now for my brother in law's birthday. That is what brought me to your channel. I have made a lot of other boards, boxes etc. and I can tell you for sure that the next thing I make will absolutely be a glue up box/jig like the one you use. That thing is a game changer. It got my attention immediately!
wow again! Beautiful chessboard. Yes. I am curious as to the inlay setup on the cnc. I have a cnc, and have experimented a bit with inlays, but have yet to try deeper inlays.
All of your chessboard videos are incredible and inspiring. So much so I took up your challenge and made a chess table for my sons for Christmas. It's not quite as good as any of yours, to put it mildly, but I think they will play on it for years to come. I would post a pic but I don't see any way to do that. Nonetheless, many thanks to you!
Great video. Question. Are you using parchment paper under your glue up? Do you hav a video on how you made the clamping jig under your glue up? Thanks again. Al
Thanks for the video. Do you have any issue with these boards splitting, noting that you are literally veneering over 3 mm thickness . What is the risk of the timber expanding and cracking.? Thanks again
@Wood U Make It I would be very curious to know what Alex (or someone in a position similar to his) thinks of my chessboard concept that I emailed you about. Because my idea behind the concept is that it better represents an actual battlefield than a standard chessboard.
I have a question: I’ve read else where that glueing the board to plywood would cause the board to either crack or buckle to to a lack of seasonal movement. Is that something that people should be worried about
I am always amazed at how you cut the mitres with just a tape measure to mark, and they always fit perfectly. Do you ever have to sneak up on the fit or use a 45 degree shooting board?
I definitely have to sneak up on the fit. I wouldn't be so bold to measure like that and hope that it fits. I normally make that first cut to be about 1/16" - 1/8" too long and then I make several small passes to get it to fit well. Maybe I should show that process in a video one day, show how I adjust the angle if the two miters do not meet up correctly, and show how I recover if I accidentally cut it too short. I don't use a shooting board for this; I do everything on the table saw and it has worked quite well for me.
Hi Mike, I love watching your chess board videos from here in Scotland & it got me wondering would you ever consider building a custom backgammon board/set? I'd love to see that be attempted someday.
I'd definitely like to make a video of a backgammon board. I just need to find the time to do that. It likely won't happen this year with everything on my plate, but maybe I'll find some time in 2023.
I love your videos, Mike. Thanks for sharing. When you glued up the board, is that just regular old parchment paper you used to keep the board from sticking to your clamping cauls? How many uses do you get out of a sheet of it?
It's just regular parchment paper and I try to be careful with it to get several uses out of it. I probably use it six or seven times before I have to toss it. I actually have packing tape on the edges of the clamping cauls, so the parchment paper is more for keeping any glue off my clamping fixture and to make sure the plywood that I use to apply vertical pressure doesn't stick to the board. Thanks for watching!
Wood I make it?, yes if I had all your high end tools, I have a decent table saw, a miter saw and a router and would love to make a chess board. A great video would be how to make a great chess board only using basic tools for the ordinary wood worker!
Hi Mike. I don't know if you remember me. I built a chessboard that had 3d effect to it. I was so impressed by your work, I sent it to you to plane/sand down. The board was too wide for my planer. Well I have another one same design a little smaller, but still too wide for my planer. Would you be interested in doing the same for my new project?
Awesome execution. I've seen several of your chessboard build videos, and notice you're steadily refining your game. I also noted you're in the DC Metro area (trying not to be too specific here on your behalf) as am I... Question: where do you source your hardwoods? To Alex: Go Army, Beat Navy! - USMA '92
Thanks. I think my process gets a little better each time I make one of these. I get my hardwood from five different places. My main source of walnut, maple, and ash is Northland Forest Products. Vienna Hardwoods has some great specials from time to time, and that's where I got the wenge and Bolivian rosewood. For more exotic woods, I go to Exotic Lumber in Annapolis. Two other places I use are Colonial Hardwoods in Springfield and C.P. Johnson Lumber in Culpeper.
@@Woodumakeit I heard Vienna and Colonial are good. I'll have to check out the rest, though I'm closer to F-burg now... though I'll inevitably have to come up to the Woodcraft there on 495. Thanks!
@@mattelias721 There's a Woodcraft here in Richmond, too. Probably a little farther, but it's an option to avoid traffic getting in and out of Northern Virginia.
I love this video. I’ll just note that a WHOLE bunch of talented musicians played your magnificent music and got no credit. What orchestra’s recordings did you use?
I don't have a detailed video, but this one shows a quick overview of the clamping fixture and how I made it: th-cam.com/video/fVO3zQfVhzE/w-d-xo.htmlm4s
If I had thought about it more carefully, I would have had a different game board built on the other side. I would also have replaced my initials with an inlaid American flag. It was an ever-changing project.
I used Titebond III for gluing the squares and Titebond Extend for gluing the frame. The Titebond Extend gives me more time to position the frame before the glue starts to set.
Marines are technically part of the Navy even though they operate independently, so I guess that's why the client chose not to have their logo on the board.

Yes, any non-ferrous metal that is relative soft, like copper or aluminum, is easy to cut with a table saw or miter saw.
