I'm from a cheddar producing region here in the US. My daughter took a job on a farm producing traditional mold ripened cheeses like camembert, and began bringing me samples, which I consumed much like the cheddar I was used to. I like all sorts of cheese, so the camembert/brie/limburger types were very enjoyable, but what I wasn't expecting was how the smell would follow me around like a hamper of wet towels and gym socks. People would literally hold their nose as I walked by- than I remembered the old cliche about the French smelling badly (by English speaking standards)- it was the cheese all along!
